Colonel Thomas Thannisch of the Confederate Army built

the Stockyards Hotel in 1907. It was enlarged to its current

size in 1913 and quickly became a “home away from home” for

businessmen and ranchers participating in the booming

livestock market, as well as visitors and rodeo competitors

going to the nearby Cowtown Coliseum. The world’s first

indoor rodeo was held at the Cowtown Coliseum with the first

Fat Stock Show in 1896. The infamous bank robbers, Bonnie

Parker and Clyde Barrow, hid out at the Stockyards Hotel in

1933 while being chased by the law. Bonnie and Clyde checked

into what is now Room 305, which overlooks Main Street and

Exchange Avenue and provided an excellent lookout point.

Located in the room is one of Bonnie’s guns, along with papers

of authenticity.

Saturday, May 18, 2019 6:00am-8:30am Breakfast at our hotel at your leisure

8:30am-11:30am A local Certified Step-on-Guide will join us on the bus this

morning as we tour and learn the rich history behind the Historic Stockyard

District as well as the Museum District in the Fort Worth area. We will visit the

Amon Carter Museum of American Art for about an hour. The Amon Carter

Museum has one of the largest permanent collections of American Art. It consists

of pieces from the 1830’s to the late 20th

Century from great American artists such

as Alexander Calder, Thomas Cole, Thomas Eakins, George O’Keeffe and Alfred

Stieglitz. There is also a permanent exhibit of Amon Carter’s personal collection

of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, who are the best artists of the

American West. With more than 30,000 prints, the museum has one of the finest

photography collections in the US.

11:30am-12:15pm With over 100,000 square feet under roof, capacity

of 6,000 fun-loving folks, 30 individual bar stations, live bull riding,

numerous dance floors and nightly entertainment 7-days a week, we

visit the largest honky tonk in the world—Billy Bob’s Honky Tonk!

On our guided tour we will see some unique western décor complete

with photos and handprints of country stars.

The building now known as Billy Bob’s Texas was built in 1910

and was once an open-air barn used to house prize cattle for the Fort

Worth Stock Show. In 1936, as a Texas Centennial Project, the

building was enclosed by the city of Fort Worth at a cost of $183,500

and the tower over the main entrance was added. The “new” structure

contained 1,257 animal stalls, and a 1,200-seat auction ring that is now

the Billy Bob’s Bull Riding Arena. During World War II, the building

was used as an airplane factory for the Globe Aircraft Corporation. In

the 1950’s the building became a department store so large that the

stock boys wore roller skates to make their jobs easier.

Billy Bob’s Texas opened April 1, 1981 with national attention featuring Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin

Brothers as the first performers. Other artists who appeared during opening week include Waylon Jennings,

Janie Fricke and Willie Nelson. Several artists including George Strait, Alan Jackson and Travis Tritt

performed on the Honky Tonk Stage as the house band before hitting the big time. We will experience this

truly amazing Honky Tonk attitude, friendly Fort Worth hospitality, and truly unique atmosphere.

Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards National Historic

District every day at 11:30am and 4:00pm. Every detail of the

cattle drive—from the saddles and chaps to the boots and

hats—is authentic and historically true. The Cattle Drive

travels through the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards on E.

Exchange Avenue in front of the Fort Worth Livestock

Exchange Building and then back to the holding pens behind

the Livestock Exchange Building for viewing. This event is a

must see and something you do not want to miss, held on the

street directly in front of our hotel! We will watch the event in

front of the Cowtown Coliseum.

4:15pm-5:15pm A local certified Stockyards guide will join us

on a walking tour throughout the entire Stockyards, sharing

historical facts and timeless stories along the way. On this

Stockyards Historical Wrangler Walking Tour, the old west

comes alive as we tour Mule Alley, the Cowtown Coliseum and

the Historic Livestock Exchange Building. On the Cattlemen’s

Catwalk we will see the original pens below and a panoramic

view of the area. Quanah Parker and Bill Pickett are some

characters whose stories will come to life!

5:15pm-7:30pm Tonight for dinner we sample some delicious

Cowboy Cuisine with an authentic Western Chuckwagon

Steak or Chicken Dinner. The cowboy chef will set up his

Chuckwagon on the lawn in front of the Cowtown Coliseum

where he will prepare our food in Dutch Ovens and a fire-grill.

Along with the steak or chicken enjoy some cowboy beans,

potatoes, salad and cornbread cooked in a Dutch Oven cowboy

style. A delicious dessert will follow made right at the camp site.

Your cowboy dinner will be served on old west style blue chip

enamel ware. After dinner we attend the Stockyards

Championship Rodeo located just up the steps.

Stockyards Championship Rodeo

Cowtown Coliseum

121 E. Exchange Ave

Fort Worth, TX 76164

From the 1860’s into the late 1870’s, Fort Worth was the king

of the cattle industry and earned its nickname—Cowtown. A cowboy

could hang his hat, take off his boots and settle in for a night of

gambling, partying and trouble in civilization’s last stop on the

Chisholm Trail before the long cattle drive north to Kansas City.

Now it is the scene of vibrant restaurants, live music and less bawdy

entertainment. The Texas and Pacific Railway arrived in Fort Worth

in 1876 and several other railroad companies arrived soon after.

Railroads were the catalyst for further cattle industry growth and the

building of stockyards.

The Stockyards Championship Rodeo is held in the world-

famous Cowtown Coliseum and is the home of the world’s first

indoor rodeo. They are the world’s only year-round rodeo—every

Friday and Saturday night year-round at 8:00pm. Their rodeo

features timed events such as tie-down roping, break away roping,

team roping and barrel racing and rough stock events such as bull

riding. On Saturday nights, more rough stock events are added.

The Cowtown Coliseum located in the heart of the Fort Worth

Stockyards National Historic District has a rich history steeped in

Rodeo and the West. The Cowtown Coliseum project was started in

1907 and completed in 1908, at a cost of $250,000. In 1986 the

Cowtown Coliseum was totally refurbished and brought up to

modern day standards including heating and air conditioning

systems. The Coliseum has also been the location of numerous

movies, television shows and music videos. George Straight and

Billy Dean have filmed music videos here at the Coliseum.
