It would be safe to say that yours truly is not the only one wishing Mother Nature would make up her mind on what season it is.

Between a large amount of rain and the latest round of snowfall, athletes involved in baseball, track and golf and Owensville High School have not had a chance to compete in spring-like conditions yet this season.

Playing a grand total of five games so far, Tim Nagel’s Dutch-men baseball squad has had to make do with very limited practice time on the diamond.

“It makes things really difficult when you’ve only been out on the field four times since Feb. 25 (the first day of spring practices),” Dutchmen head baseball coach Tim Nagel said.

Even though Owensville is still searching for the win column five games into the young season, their main focus is getting better with each game they are able to get in.

“We’re just trying to get better and I’m excited for what is ahead of us,” Nagel said. “We just need to get some decent weather around here, this isn’t baseball weather.”

Matt Candrl’s OHS Track and Field squad has a mere two meets under their belts and will have to wait until next Tuesday for their next one thanks to Mother Nature.

“The challenge (of not being outside) is that you can’t give them the intensity needed to bring about improved race performance by being inside so much,” Candrl said. “A positive is that we’ve been able to get into the weight room and improve our overall fitness.”

When meets resume, Candrl noted “we will have to race our-selves into shape again.”

STEELVILLE — Same place, different team, same result.

Sweeping their way through pool play, Gayle Hinch’s seventh-grade Dutchgirl volleyball team easily advanced into the championship bracket of the annual Steel-ville 7th Grade Volleyball Tournament held Saturday in Crawford County.

Surviving a three-set battle with Dixon’s Lady Bulldogs in the semifinals, Owensville advanced to a championship showdown with the host Lady Cardinals.

A late service run from Josie Miller helped the Dutchgirls to their second win over Steelville in a week winning a tourna-ment title in two sets (25-21 and 25-19).

OMS also defeated Steelville in three sets a week ago Friday in the final match of the season at Owensville Elementary.

Starting a full day of volleyball in pool play, the Dutchgirls took on Sullivan who looked to avenge a close loss in two sets nearly two weeks ago.

Gradually building a lead thanks to service points from Hannah Powers, Lexy Sillman and Laurynn Tallent, OMS was able to take game one from the Lady Eagles by a score of 25-17.

In game two, leading 10-9, a Miller kill led to a pair of Madison Walters service points bumped the Dutchgirl lead to 13-9.

Now with a 20-16 lead, another Miller kill led to three Madison Ridenhour points and a 25-18 victory in game two.

St. James’ Lady Tigers were next in pool play for Hinch’s Dutchgirls.

Defeating their foes from Phelps County in two sets just days earlier, OMS quickly raced out to a 14-8 lead behind points from Tallent, Powers and Ridenhour.

Overcoming errors that cut their lead to two, a Hannah Forster kill led to four Walters’ points and a 19-12 advantage on a Forster block of a St. James spike.

Two points away from a game one vic-tory, Grace Jett served up a pair of aces for a 25-18 win moving Owensville a win closer to another sweep in pool play.

Four-point service runs from Powers, Sillman and Kelsey Ryerson helped OMS to a 25-14 game-two victory and a 4-0 mark in pool play.

Even though the weather may have been unseasonably cold for the Mizzou Relays over the weekend, Dutchmen senior Trevor Nicks did his best to warm up the throwing areas in the shot put and discus.

Starting his weekend in the discus on Friday, Nicks saved it for his last throw of the event.

Entering the final of six throws, the OHS senior busted out for a distance of 139-8 which was a good eight feet from his previous best of 131-8 in his third throw from Audrey J. Walton Stadium at the Mizzou Relays in Columbia.

“Through the preliminary throws, the top five throwers were all very close,” OHS senior thrower Trevor Nicks said. “Even though my last throw went farther than my first five, it was not quite enough to move me up a spot in the standings.

moved the Dutchmen senior into some very exclusive company.

On his second throw, Nicks joined former Owensville throwers John Brune, Josh Hoener and Jake Hinson as former and current Dutchmen athletes to break the 50-foot mark in the shot put.

His distance of 50-6 ultimately won the even by almost four feet ahead of second-

place thrower Sylvester King’s (Jefferson City) mark of 46-11.

“When I threw it, it felt good,” Nicks said. “However at Mizzou, they measure in metric. Even when they announced the length, it wasn’t instant gratification.”

Once someone with a calculator game along, Nicks was able to celebrate knowing he made OHS track history.

“I was trying to convert in my head until someone with a calculator did it,” Nicks explained. “Once I knew the distance in feet, I felt great knowing what I was able to accomplish.”

Logan Shoemaker and Tyler Davis also competed alongside Nicks in the shot and discus over the weekend in Columbia.

Keeping the day one field event success going was Katie Gregor in the shot put.

Putting up a distance of 38-1.5 on her first throw, the OHS record holder in the shot took third at Mizzou. Haley Record also cracked the top 10 with a ninth-place throw of 32-11.

“Katie threw well today,” OHS head track and field coach Matt Candrl said. “It is good when she is disappointed with her performance when the majority of her throws last season would have been a personal record for her.”

Grace Jahnsen and Erika Ellis also tossed the shot for Owensville.

Hinch took seventh while Matt Pohlmann tied for 11th clearing the bar 8-11.75.

Eric Dahl (8-6) and Cody Dolles (7-11.5) also competed in the pole vault for OHS under the guidance of first-year volunteer track coach Taylor Hofstetter.

Coming off a win in the high jump last Tuesday, Dutchgirl freshman Hailey Diestelkamp cleared 4-7 to take seventh.

Breanna Baker also sailed over the bar at 4-3 to place 11th at Mizzou.

Farrell, Strubberg deny Wildcat shutout in OHS home opener

4th grade volleyball wins at Montgomery CountyCompeting over the weekend in Montgomery County, a fourth-grade Dutchgirl volleyball team came home with first-place medals after placing second in Union the previous weekend. Opening their season with a tough road loss, Tim Nagel’s dia-mond Dutchmen looked for better fortunes in their Memorial Field opener last Wednesday afternoon.

As part of the Four Rivers Baseball Classic (FRBC), Ow-ensville took on Montgomery County’s Wildcats last Wednesday afternoon.

Falling behind 10-0 after a five-run fifth inning, OHS could not muster the offense needed for a comeback in an 11-1 loss in six innings to the visiting Wildcats.

“I’ve been telling the kids that this is like spring training for us right now,” Dutchmen head base-ball coach Tim Nagel said. “We’ve just got to keep getting better as this

is only the fourth time we’ve been outside since February 25 (the first day of spring practices).”

If not for a two-out Evan Milner solo home run, Dutchmen junior hurler Landon Farrell would’ve pitched a one-two-three inning.

“It was nice to see him start his season off with a home run on the first pitch of his first at bat,” Mont-gomery County baseball head coach Don Moultrie said.

Held hitless in five innings at Potosi, senior Josh Gregor quickly made sure that a second no-hitter would not be possible.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, the OHS senior catcher pushed a ball out of the infield for a base hit. Fellow senior Chris Baumbach drew a two-out walk presenting a potential scoring opportunity for Owensville.

Unable to cash in, the Dutchmen trailed Montgomery Co., 1-0.

Helping his own cause in the top of the second Wildcat hurler Jack-son Bishop delivered a two-RBI single as part of a four-run inning leading to a 5-0 Wildcat lead.

Quiet on the base pads until the bottom of the fourth, Dutchmen third baseman Alex Moritz recorded a two-out walk only to be stranded at first base.

After an inning of scoreless relief from Jacob Linders, Montgomery Co., used a two-out, two-RBI single from Zeke Theissen to boost their lead to 10-0 over the host Dutchmen entering the bottom of the fifth.

“We had 11 hits spread out all over the place tonight and we couldn’t string too much of anything together,” Moultrie said.

With one out, Brady Strubberg came up in a pinch-hitting role and drew a walk representing the run needed to keep the game going.

“In his first plate appearance of the year, he did a good job of get-ting on base,” Nagel said. “We’re

“They are starting to get a little stir crazy,” Dutchmen head golf coach Brad Royle said of his team. “They have been playing against each other whenever possible to keep their competitive juices flowing along with practicing their swing and grip at home.”

Hopefully the 50-plus degree temperatures forecasted for later this week decide to stick around.

Licklider earns Hall of Fame recognition

Last Sunday night at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City, Mo., another Owensville native became the latest person to be inducted into a hall of fame.

1970 Owensville High School graduate Dennis Licklider and his wife Roberta were enshrined in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame for their years of coaching the Jefferson City High School Track program from the late 1970’s until 2009 when they retired together.

“I was quite surprised and hon-ored (to get into the hall of fame), 1970 OHS graduate Dennis Lick-lider said. “It was something me and my wife (Roberta Licklider) never expected to happen.”

During Dennis’ days roam-ing the halls of OHS, he had a significant impact on the first two seasons of Dutchmen football in 1968 and 1969.

Serving as a co-captain with Doug Bloemke, Owensville played a junior varsity schedule during the 1968 season before playing their

West-Derby earns fifth-place finishBY WILL JOHNSONRepublican Sports Editor

UNION — Fresh off winning a three-team tournament four days earlier at Birch Creek Golf Club (BCGC), Owensville freshman golfer Zane West-Derby looked to carry his consistent play at BCGC into the annual Four Rivers Conference (FRC) Golf Tournament held Monday morning.

Carding an 18-hole round of 83, the Dutchmen freshman took fifth in the tournament to earn a medal for finishing in the top ten.

After a sudden-death playoff that went two holes decided the FRC Champion in Sullivan’s Ryan Juergens, West-Derby earned All-FRC Honorable Mention status following voting by FRC coaches.

“I think Zane’s top-five finish as well as his (All-FRC) honorable mention selec-tion was fantastic,” Owensville head golf coach Brad Royle said. “I’m expecting good things from districts on Monday.”

Lady Falcons, Bulldogs claim team titles in OHS Relays


After seeing their varsity counterparts drop a 16-0 decision to St. James in five innings, the JV Dutchmen baseball team went for a Pink Night doubleheader split against the visiting Tigers Monday night at Memorial Field.

Pitching a scoreless top of the first in-ning, Dutchmen starting pitcher Ray Page rooted for his offense to give him a lead.

In similar fashion to the OMS Relays the previous Friday, the OHS Relays Friday night at Dutchmen Field saw the boy’s team standings decided in the last event.

Going into the 4x400-meter relay, School of the Osage was nursing a two-point lead over Rolla’s Bulldogs.

Winning the 4x400, Rolla (89) overtook Osage (81) for the boy’s team title. Finish-ing third in the 4x400 allowed first-time OHS Relays participant Blair Oaks (72) to pass St. Clair (69) for third place.

Placing seventh as a team with 37 points, Owensville battled through injury, sickness and kids being gone for other school-related competitions.

“This was a tough one for us,” OHS head track and field coach Matt Candrl said. “Even though our team performance was down due to sickness, injury and kids gone for other school contests, I’m proud of the way they competed tonight.”

Owensville came right back in the bottom of the second.

Helmig reached on a one-out single leading to a David Weirich walk. Both run-ners stole second and third with a throwing error allowing Weirich to score. Helmig came across on a RBI sacrifice fly from Smith bumping the OHS lead to 6-1 after two innings under the lights.

A wild pitch, walk and a hit allowed St. James to trim the Owensville lead to 6-2 entering the bottom of the third.

Even after being relieved on the pitch-ing mound by Goggin, Page drew a walk to start the Owensville half of the third.

first season of varsity football in 1969. Along with football, Lick-lider was also a member of the OHS Track and Field team.

Now living in Holts Summit, Dennis served as Jefferson City High School’s head track and field coach for 24 years.

In that time, his track teams went 237-5 in dual meets, won 106 major meet championships and 40 district titles.

With 20 of those seasons un-defeated, his Jays won nine state championships.

He was named the National Federation of High Schools Mis-souri Coach of the Year in 2004. Licklider is also a member of the Missouri Track and Field Hall of Fame.

“Jerm was able to out perform the competition on another cold and windy night,” Candrl said. “He has made his mind up that his senior season will be his best one.”

Logan Shoemaker also took fifth in the shot breaking the 40-foot mark with a throw of 41-10.

Drew Garner (2nd at 38-04) and Joey Oberle (5th at 18-10) led OHS jumping contingency in the triple and long jump respectively.

“Joey (Oberle) had a personal record in the long jump tonight,” Candrl said. “He continues to im-prove in the event down the stretch.”

Leading the Dutchmen relay teams was the 4x200 foursome of Anthony Diestelkamp, Ben Angell, Garner and Oberle with a sixth-place time of 1:41.45.

Taking ninth in their respective relays were the 4x100 quartet of Hikaru Irie, Diestelkamp, Garner and Oberle; the 4x400 team of

Blake Bohl, Nick Collins, Austin Brocato and Diestelkamp; and the 4x800 squad of Blaine McKinney, Danny Herrera, Caleb Mundwiller and Collins.

“Danny (Herrera) had a good run in the 4x800 and a solid 3200-meter run tonight,” Candrl said.

Making their first appearance in the OHS Relays, Blair Oaks’ Lady Falcons made it a good one.

Winning the meet with 106.5 points, Blair Oaks finished ahead of Rolla (85), St. Clair (73), Fatima (60.5) and Owensville (51).

“Even with several key athletes sick, injured or missing, we still managed to finish ahead of 10 teams,” Candrl said.

Leading the Dutchgirls was junior thrower Katie Gregor with a winning toss of 39-05 in the shot put.

Grace Jahnsen also took fifth with a put of 33-08 in the shot.

Getting a PR, Haley Record took second in the discus with a heave of 116-11 behind St. Clair’s Alicia York (119-02).

“Haley (Record) had a nice PR in the discus tonight,” Candrl said.

“She continues to bring her perfor-mance level up a notch each year.”

Erika Ellis also took ninth in the discus with a throw of 80-00.

Matching their Dutchmen coun-terparts, the Dutchgirl 4x200 team of Ali Doll, Emily Ellis, Kayla Charboneau and Mackenzie Lamp-kin placed sixth in 1:57.13.

Overcoming a fifth-place finish in the mile, Hannah Baehr came back to finish second in the 3200.

“Even though Hannah (Baehr) came to me feeling sick prior to the races, she got out there and competed really well,” Candrl said.

Adding to her relay, Ellis took third in the 100m hurdles (17.63) and second in the 800 (2:28.56).

Weather permitting, OHS track will compete today (Wednesday) in relay meets at Hermann and Vienna before the annual FRC meet in St. Clair next Monday at 9:30 a.m.

Someone loves Fireman’s Hill?

As silly a question as this is, it actually produced mixed answers after racing over the weekend at the MSHSAA Cross Country Championships in Jefferson City at the Oak Hills Golf Center.

Situated about a mile from the finish line, Fireman’s Hill can make or break a race for cross country state qualifiers more often than not.

Dutchmen freshman Carter Brocato defied conventional logic going with the fact that he liked the daunting obstacle at the state meet.

“It felt pretty good going up it for the first time,” Brocato said. “It felt even better when I picked off 15 runners on my way up.”

After finishing his climb up the hill, the Dutchmen freshman etched his name on to the top 10 fastest times by an Owensville male cross country runner at the state meet. Ousting his uncle (Chad Brocato) from the top 10, Brocato’s 47th-place time of 17:33.16 was the fastest time at state since Chad Limberg posted a mark of 17:36.64 during the 2001 state meet.

On the other hand, the hill ended Emily Ellis’ quest to earn All-State accolades from Jefferson City.

“It (fireman’s hill) finished me,” Ellis said. “I didn’t eat breakfast and my body couldn’t function.”

Dutchgirl spikers earn postseason nodsBY WILL JOHNSONRepublican Sports Editor

Reaching the Class 3, District 8 Cham-pionship game and finishing in the top half of the Four Rivers Conference standings led to postseason honors for four Owens-ville Dutchgirl volleyball players.

Voting amongst FRC coaches landed three of Kari Nolting’s varsity volleyball players on their respective All-FRC teams.

Sophomore Hailey Diestelkamp earned her second straight selection to the All-FRC 1st team helping the Dutchgirls to a 3-4 record and a fourth-place finish in the FRC.

Used primarily in the front row, Di-estelkamp led the Dutchgirls with 160 kills out of 202 attack attempts. That figures up to a kill percentage of 79.20.

Aggressive at the net, the Dutchgirl middle hitter also led the team with 58 blocks. Mandie Robertson also reached double figures in blocks with 13.

JEFFERSON CITY — Qualifying four OHS harriers for the MSHSAA Cross Country Championships Saturday at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City, they all left with valuable learning experiences.

It was not until high noon that Dutch-men state qualifiers Carter Brocato and Blaine McKinney hit the course running

along with the rest of the Class 3 boys field.Finishing an area-high 47th in a time of

17:33.16, Brocato knocked his uncle Chad Brocato off of the top 10 fastest state times by an OHS Dutchmen harrier.

“Even though it’s my first race without a medal, I still feel like I ran a pretty good time,” Brocato said. “I’m excited to come back and make all-state next year.”

Dutchmen harrier at the state meet behind Russell Lansford (17:18.03 in 1995) and Tim Wenkel (17:31.16 in 1995).

Making his second state appearance in as many years, McKinney registered a 59th place time of 17:45.92.

Nowack was a 1998 graduate of Owensville High School and an offensive coordinator to former Jaguar and Dutchmen head coach Paul Day who is now at Vian-ney in St. Louis.

“I could not have achieved any of this without my teammates,” Diestelkamp said. “I’ve seen a big improvement from my team over the last year and look for us to keep getting better in the offseason.”

Joining Diestelkamp on the All-FRCfirstteamwasDutchgirlsenior Grace Schlottach.

“I was excited when I found I made all-conference again,” Schlottach said.

Doing most of her damage behind the serving line, the OHS senior recorded 32 aces and re-cordedamere20serveerrorsoutof 179 serve attempts.

Schlottach was also second on theteaminkillswith120whileadd-ing 54 digs during her senior year.

Landing on theAll-FRC 2ndteam as a setter was OHS senior Brittany Jahnsen.

“This was the first time I’dgotten all-conference and I was really excited when I found out,” Jahnsen said.

ServingfirstforthemajorityofOwensville’s games, Jahnsen led the Dutchgirls with 41 aces while recording a team-high 287 serveattempts with a miniscule 13 errors.

Second on the team in digs with 99, the senior setter racked up 398 assists with only 13 setting errors.

Fellow senior Shelby Stiehr joined Diestelkamp on the All-Districtfirstteamasalibero.

Virtually all over the court, Stiehr recorded a team-high 176 digs from any and all spots.

“I was shocked when I found out that I made all district to end my senior year,” Stiehr said.

“Sometimes great athletes have bad experiences,” OHS head cross country coach Matt Candrl said. “Almost anytime this happens, they bounce back in a big way.”

Candrl also noted that Ellis was on pace to eclipse Hannah Baehr’s time of 20:16.91 from the 2011state meet as the fastest time at Oak Hills by a Dutchgirl harrier at the two-mile mark before dropping out.
