Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
July 19, 2020
Gathering around God’s Word
Welcome and Announcements
Prelude
Call to Worship (Adapted from Psalm 139)
O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.
You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.
You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. .
Opening Prayer Lisa Patterson
Hymn 9 The Play of the Godhead Perichoresis
Prayer of Confession+ We confess, O God, that sometimes we idolize fear because we believe we can control our lives, and the lives
of others, through fear. Sometimes we allow fear to be our constant companion that we let take the place of
you. Sometimes we see fear as the powerful enemy that paralyzes us and convinces us it is more powerful
than you. Forgive us, O God, for letting our fears overwhelm our faith, and help us to remember that you are a
faithful God who leads us from our fears to hope and new life. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen (Time of
silent confession).
Declaration of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel.
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!
Call to Faithfulness (Ephesians 4:1-6)
Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience,
bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one
baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.
Sung Response Refrain of hymn 605, Praise to God the Father
Praise to God the Father; praise to God the Son; praise to God the Spirit: praise to the Three-in-One. Sing
praise, sing praise to the Lord on high. Praise to God Almighty; praise to the Holy One.

Responding to God’s Word
Hymn 458 Thy Word Thy Word
Apostles’ creed (unison) (Ecumenical version) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our
Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into
heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I
believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
Presentation of Tithes & Offerings
Sung Response Hymn 607, Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Christ, all people here below; praise Holy Spirit evermore;
praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication
Hymn 707 Take Thou Our Minds, Dear Lord Hall
Benediction
Postlude
10 When the cloud went away from over the tent, Miriam had become leprous,[b] as white as snow. And
Aaron turned towards Miriam and saw that she was leprous. 11 Then Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my
lord, do not punish us[c] for a sin that we have so foolishly committed. 12 Do not let her be like one still-
born, whose flesh is half consumed when it comes out of its mother’s womb.” 13 And Moses cried to the
Lord, “O God, please heal her.” 14 But the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face,
would she not bear her shame for seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp for seven days, and after
that she may be brought in again.” 15 So Miriam was shut out of the camp for seven days; and the people
did not set out on the march until Miriam had been brought in again. 16 After that the people set out
from Hazeroth, and camped in the wilderness of Paran
Scripture Lessons
Numbers 13: 25-33 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aa-
ron and to all the congregation of the Israelites in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to
all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us;
it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 Yet the people who live in the land are strong, and the towns are fortified
and very large; and besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the land of the Negeb; the
Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea, and along the Jordan.”
30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome
it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against this people, for they are stronger than
we.” 32 So they brought to the Israelites an unfavorable report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land that we
have gone through as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are of great size. 33 There
we saw the Nephilim (the Anakites come from the Nephilim); and to ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we
seemed to them.”
Numbers 14: 1-10a Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2 And all the Israelites
complained against Moses and Aaron; the whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt!
Or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives
and our little ones will become booty; would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 So they said to one another, “Let us
choose a captain, and go back to Egypt.” Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of
the congregation of the Israelites. 6 And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were
among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to all the congregation of the Isra-
elites, “The land that we went through as spies is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the Lord is pleased with
us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. 9 Only, do not
rebel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land, for they are no more than bread for us;
their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10 But the whole con-
gregation threatened to stone them.
