Responding to God’s Word

Hymn 754 Help Us Accept Each Other BARONITA

Affirmation of Faith (unison) (Adapted from The Confession of 1967, 9.17) God has created humanity in a personal relation with God that humans may respond to the love of the Creator.

God has created male and female and given them a life which proceeds from birth to death in a succession of

generations and in a wide complex of social relations. God has endowed humans with capacities to make the

world serve God’s needs and to enjoy its good things. Life is a gift to be received with gratitude and a task to be

pursued with courage. Humans are free to seek their lives within the purpose of God: to develop and protect the

resources of nature for the common welfare, to work for justice and peace in society, and in other ways to use

God’s creative powers for the fulfillment of human life. Amen.

Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.

Amen.

Presentation of Tithes & Offerings

Sung Response Hymn 607, Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Christ, all people here below; praise Holy Spirit evermore;

praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.

Update on the St. Andrew Pandemic Relief Fund

The updated beginning fund amount of $10,650 reflects

your efforts in ongoing and timely generosity given as

well as actions taken to get people needed help. The Fund

was started with $5,000 seed money and in two weeks

time grew to $10,650 through gifts and matching funds.

Thank you for your work in this needed outreach and ac-

tions taken to respond quickly. Similarly the requests have

started coming in, and the team from the Mission Com-

mittee awarded $1,700. The checks are literally in the mail

and probably have already been received. Please continue

to guide people to the request form, because we do want

to put these funds to work where they are needed. Also,

remember the any amount given is matched by the Mis-

sion funds that have been set aside for this purpose. Ques-

tions? Ask Natalie Garcia at [email protected] or

Dave McRae at [email protected].

sume to: [email protected].

First Scripture Lesson 2 Corinthians 1: 15-20

Since I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a double favor;[d] 16 I wanted to visit

you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on to Ju-

dea. 17 Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to ordinary human standards,[e] ready to say “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time? 18 As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not

been “Yes and No.” 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy

and I, was not “Yes and No”; but in him it is always “Yes.” 20 For in him every one of God’s promises is a “Yes.”

For this reason it is through him that we say the “Amen,” to the glory of God. 21 But it is God who establishes us

with you in Christ and has anointed us, 22 by putting his seal on us and giving us his Spirit in our hearts as a first

installment.

Second Scripture Lesson Genesis 4: 1-16 Now the man knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have produced[a] a man with the

help of the Lord.” 2 Next she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the

ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel for his

part brought of the firstlings of his flock, their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offer-

ing, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance

fell. 6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you

not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master

it.”

8 Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.”[b]And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against

his brother Abel, and killed him. 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” He said, “I do not

know; am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 And the Lord said, “What have you done? Listen; your brother’s blood is

crying out to me from the ground! 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to

receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield to you its

strength; you will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater

than I can bear! 14 Today you have driven me away from the soil, and I shall be hidden from your face; I shall be a

fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and anyone who meets me may kill me.” 15 Then the Lord said to him, “Not

so![c] Whoever kills Cain will suffer a sevenfold vengeance.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, so that no one

who came upon him would kill him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord, and settled in the

land of Nod,[d] east of Eden.

Prelude

Call to Worship (Adapted from Psalm 86)

Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.

Guard my life, for I am faithful to you; save your servant who trusts in you.

You are my God; have mercy on me, Lord, for I call to you all day long.

Bring joy to your servant, Lord, for I put my trust in you.

Opening Prayer

Hymn 667 When Morning Gilds the Skies LAUDES DOMINI

Prayer of Confession

God of all hope and joy, we confess that we continue to live in fear. You send your Word to enliven us, yet

we remain dry bones. You send your Spirit to empower us, yet we fail to dream new dreams. Forgive us,

God of grace. Lead us according to your way, guide us into your truth, and deliver us from death to life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (time of silent confession).

Declaration of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Call to Faithfulness (Ephesians 4:1-6)

Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience,

bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one

baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

Sung Response Refrain of hymn 605, Praise to God the Father

Praise to God the Father; praise to God the Son; praise to God the Spirit: praise to the Three-in-One. Sing

praise, sing praise to the Lord on high. Praise to God Almighty; praise to the Holy One.
