Dear Friends, The columns for 2017 have been focusing on how to grow deeper in your faith, using spiritual disciplines to do so. Each of the suggestions that I have made involve disciplines that we need to grow in our faith. The disciplines that I have written about so far are: study of the Word of God, worship attendance, scripture study with others (Sunday School and Bible Study), evangelism (inviting others to Church and Sunday School), confession and fasting. The discipline that I would like to highlight this month is prayer. In its simplest form prayer is a conversation with God. It seems so easy and yet we so often find prayer hard and often we misuse prayer. It may be because we miss the central aspect of prayer. Prayer at its core is to invite God into your inner world. We open ourselves up by ask-ing for that which is important to us. The problem is that sometimes we ask for something that is not good for us. James the letter writer shared, “You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” (James 4:3). We may get frustrated in prayer because God has not given us what we ask. This attitude means that we are setting ourselves up as God with God to do our bidding. God listens to our prayers but once we give our con-cerns to God, it is up to God to choose what to do with them. In reality, to pray means that we are asking God to touch us, which means that we are asking God to transform us. Once God is invited in, we either change or God works on us to change. Prayer is transformative when we give ourselves into His care. As we spend time in prayer, may God help us to live out our mission statement to the world that we are grounded in grace, living in love, and growing for God. In Christ’s Love,

Presbyterian Men The Presbyterian Men will hold its regular
meeting at Hagerstown Family Diner at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, May 16. Come and take some time to enjoy the fellowship of other men, and participate in a Bible Study. Please sign up if attending.
Presbyterian Women The Coordinating Team will meet on Tues-
day, May 9, at 9:00 a.m. The Presbyterian Women’s Circles meet
on May 9, at 10:00 a.m., and 7:00 p.m. All are welcome. This will be the last meeting until September.

Church Women United Church Women United of Washington
County will hold their May Friendship Cele-bration on Friday, May 5, at 6:00 p.m., at Zi-on Lutheran Church, 35 W. Potomac Street, Williamsport, MD. The cost of the meal will be $10.50. It will consist of chicken breast, scalloped potatoes, green beans, etc., and will be catered by Ernst Market. The theme is “Kindling New Fires of Love”. The deadline for reservations to Debbie McCauley is Sun-day, April 30.
Book Club
Our evening book club will be meeting on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. We will meet in the Legacy Room. We will be discussing The Legend of Zippy Chippy, by William Thomas.
The daytime book club will be meeting at Panera Bread at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15. We will be discussing Recipes and Wood-en Spoons, by Judy Baer.
Craft Bazaar Workshops Our Craft Bazaar workshops will continue
this month. We will meet on Monday, May 8 and 22, 9:30 a.m.—12:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Marcia Davis.
Yard Sale/Bake Sale/Car Wash The Men will be holding their annual yard
sale on Saturday, May 20, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Lots of help is required all day for this event to run smoothly. Please sign up on the sheet in the parlor if you are willing to help.
The Women will be holding an indoor bake sale at the same time as the yard sale. Again, lots of help is required, both working the bake sale and providing baked goods. Please sign up in the parlor if you can help and/or contribute.
The Youth will be holding a car wash, be-ginning at 9:00 a.m. This is a fundraiser for their summer trips.
Mission Trip The church will go on a Mission Trip again
to Big Creek, Kentucky this coming summer. The dates are July 30-August 5, 2017. The cost is $169 per person. If you are planning on attending, please submit a $50 deposit to ensure your spot on this incredible mission opportunity.

Choir Fest The annual Choral Fest/National Day of
Prayer will be on Sunday, May 7, beginning at 7:00 p.m., at St. James Brethren Church. Our choir will share one of their favorite selections. Other choirs will share their talents, as well as a mass choir for all to enjoy. In addition to this, we will have prayer upon all the different segments of society. All are welcome to enjoy this spe-cial evening. An offering will be taken for the ministry of the Williamsport Ministeri-um.
Dessert Theatre The Youth will host a Dessert Theatre
on May 21, beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is a wonderful evening of entertainment and delicious desserts. The cost for attending is: Adults—$3.50, Children under 6—$1.50, and babies are free. See any of the Youth to purchase your tickets, or get them at the door.

Sunday School Snippets Toddler Class: The toddlers are learning about God’s miracles. Pre-K Class: Congratulations to the following students: Gavin Babb, Colton McKinley, Lily South, Maggie Wise, and Norah Wise, for memorizing their Bible verse, “I am with you always.” Matthew 28:20. The Pre-K students enjoy singing songs such as: “Jesus Loves Me”, “The BIBLE”, “The Carpenter’s Hammer”, and “Jesus Loves the Little Children”. The students have been studying: How Jesus shows His love, He is never too busy for us, He knows our every need, and He teaches us to love others. Kindergarten/1st Grade: Congratulations to the following students for memorizing their Bible verse, Luke 1:37, “Nothing is impossible with God”: Abby Boppe, Natalie Farioli, Brody Hemphill, Joseph Risley, and Lauren Scumpieru. The class has been studying that Jesus is all powerful. He loves us and forgives us. We should never be afraid to ask Jesus for help. He is always there for us. 2nd/3rd Grade: Congratulations to: Jeremy Hemphill, Skylar Lange, and Will McKin-ley, for memorizing their Bible verse, “The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to an-ger and rich in love.” Psalm 145:8. 4th/5th Grade: Congratulations to Emmy Paul for completing the Take Home pamphlets each week. The class has been focusing on the fact that Jesus is our promised King. He is our example, and we should serve each other with love. As Easter approaches, Jesus shows us that failure isn’t fatal, and we are to become humble and obedient to God’s Word.

6th-8th Grade: Congratulations to Claude Paul for doing his daily devotions and sharing them with the class. Congratulations to Josie Boppe for her good attendance and for do-ing the daily devotions. The following students are recognized for good attendance: Jack Brown, Olivia Brown, and Ty Plum. The students are studying how Jesus understands our loneliness and takes our doubts away. They are also memorizing the Twenty-Third Psalm. Teen Class: The Teen Class uses The Blueprint, a Christian magazine for teens. The Bi-ble is God’s blueprint for us to base our lives upon. Join us as we explore how God makes a difference in our lives, and how He wants us to make a difference in the world.
The children started preparing for Easter a month before Easter Sunday. Besides doing Easter crafts and lessons, going on egg hunts, etc., they opened three Resurrection Eggs for the three Sundays leading up to Easter, and the final three eggs were opened on Easter Sunday. Resurrection Eggs are plastic eggs, not filled with candy, but rather with Easter symbols. Each week, we would open up three eggs and talk about how these symbols re-lated to the Easter Story. Here is a summary of the Resurrection Eggs message:
1. Donkey—A lowly donkey was given to Jesus to ride into Jerusalem just before His
death and resurrection. 2. Silver coins—Judas accepted 30 silver coins for betraying Jesus into the hands of
the Jewish leaders. 3. Passover cup—At Jesus’ last supper with His disciples before He died on the cross,
He used the cup of wine to explain His death. Christians still drink from a cup to remember Christ’s blood poured out for us and our sins.
4. Praying hands—Praying hands remind us that Jesus went to the Garden of Geth-semane to pray with His disciples.
5. Leather whip—After His trial by Pilate, the Roman soldiers used leather ropes, with rocks and metal woven in, to whip Jesus, leaving 39 deep gashes in His skin.
6. Crown of thorns—The soldiers who crucified Jesus placed a crown of thorns on His head so they could mock Him by saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
7. Nails—Three large nails were driven into Jesus’ hands and feet to nail Him to the cross.
8. Dice—The Roman soldiers used dice to gamble for Jesus’ robe. 9. Soldier’s spear—Roman soldiers used a spear to pierce Jesus’ side when He was on
the cross. 10.Linen wrapping—Joseph of Arimathea wrapped the body of Jesus in a linen cloth
after He died on the cross. 11.Stone—The huge stone that had covered the tomb was found rolled away. 12.Empty tomb—Jesus’ tomb was empty because He rose from the dead!

The Sunday School students and students attending Kids of the Kingdom have been studying the Easter story this past month. We will end our Easter unit by having an East-er Quiz Bowl. The Quiz Bowl is set up like a Jeopardy game board. There are five catego-ries to choose from: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Garden of Gethsemane, Good Fri-day, and Easter Morning. We don’t feature Daily Doubles on the game board, but we do feature Sunday Specials. The students are all given study sheets to prepare for the Quiz Bowl. The morning of the Quiz Bowl, teams are formed. At the end of the game, everyone is awarded a ribbon and a certificate.
On Easter Sunday, the children all received a bag full of colorful jelly beans, attached
with the Jelly Bean Prayer. Each color of jelly beans represents a part of the Easter story. Do you know the Jelly Bean Prayer? If not, here it is:
The Colors of Easter
Red is for the blood He gave. Green is for the grass He made. Yellow is for His sun so bright. Orange is for the edge of night. Black is for the sins we made. White is for the grace He gave.
Purple is for His hours of sorrow. Pink is for our new tomorrows.
A bag full of jelly beans, colorful and sweet, Is a prayer, is a promise, is everyone’s treat!

Vacation Bible School
Can you believe that Bible School is next month? It will be held the week of June 12-16, from 6:15—8:00 p.m. If you have not registered your child, please fill out a form (in the bulletin) and place it in the offering plate, or put it on the secretary’s desk. Please feel free to invite your friends. There are guest registration forms in the parlor. Take some and hand them out to your friends. Bring them back when they are completed and place them on the secretary’s desk. We are getting all our curriculum and crafts together, so please try to hand in your registration forms as soon as possible.
We are still in need of volunteers. Please take a moment to look at the volunteer list in the parlor. We particularly need helpers in the younger grades.
The snacks for VBS go directly with the lessons taught for that evening. There is a list of snack items that are needed for the week of VBS. Please take a moment to look over the list, and sign up for what you would like to donate. Please have your items in by Thurs-day, June 8. You can put your items on the back counter in the office, labeled “VBS”. If any food needs to be refrigerated or frozen, please place it in the refrigerator/freezer. Thank you so much for making snack time such a special time at VBS.

Teacher Appreciation We will be celebrating all of our teachers
and assistants on Sunday, May 21, begin-ning at 9:30 a.m., in our new fellowship hall. EVERYONE is invited to attend the celebration. There will be note cards in the parlor for you to use to write a note of ap-preciation to your teacher. This is your meal ticket for the breakfast. Please sign up on the sheet in the parlor by May 14. We will need to know how much food to prepare.
Attention All Seniors If you are a graduating senior from high
school or college, we want to highlight your accomplishments. There are forms in the parlor at the sign-up table. Please take one and fill it out. We need the information by May 15 so that we can highlight you in the June newsletter. Place your completed form in the folder behind the forms, or on the secretary’s desk.
Local College Students We have care packages for you on the
cart in the secretary’s office. We know it is a busy time for you as you prepare for fi-nals and exams. We wanted to give you something to give you energy on those long nights of studying, as well as let you know that we are thinking of you and keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Care boxes were just sent out recently to our away college students to help them get through those long nights of preparing for finals.

New Fellowship Hall Dedication Thanks to God’s providence and the sup-
port of our congregation, our newest addition will be paid in full upon completion! That is very unusual for a church to experience. Our fellowship building includes a large ban-quet hall, large updated kitchen, bathrooms, and various up-to-date technology and sound system.
We appreciate everyone who had support-ed this project over the past 10 years. Dedication of our new fellowship hall is tentatively scheduled during the coffee hour between regular worship services on Sunday, May 28, which is also the 55th anniversary of St. Andrew. The coffee hour will begin af-ter the first service, with a short program be-ginning at 10:00 a.m. We will acknowledge dignitaries from the construction companies and our building committee. People who have been members for forty years or longer will be honored. Pastor Mark will share a brief history of St. Andrew, followed by a rib-bon cutting ceremony, dedication of the me-morial stained glass display, and naming of the building. The program will end with singing a hymn of praise.
Come and celebrate this wonderful time in our church history. Please sign up so we know how many folks to expect. We look for-ward to the many fellowship and celebratory events to be held in our new hall.
Membership Support Several longtime projects are completed,
and can now be celebrated. Our 2016 photo directories are now in
your hands. We are grateful for all who were involved throughout the process. We can now match faces with names, and review photos of some of the important events in the life of St. Andrew.
If you are a regular attendee who is not a member, but would like to be, please let Pas-tor Mark know. New members usually join at a Session meeting, held on the fourth Monday of the month. A public declaration is usually made the following Sunday.
If your vacation causes you to miss a Sunday or summer activity, please enjoy your time away and be safe. Know you will be missed.
Stewardship God has blessed us with a generous con-
gregation that realizes there are many ex-penses for St. Andrew’s active ministry. We are not just a Sunday morning church. Be-low are some of the ways your tithes and of-ferings are used during the summer months.
Come to church on Sunday throughout the hot summer, and you’ll be greeted with a cool sanctuary. In fact, a cool environment is available for the many ongoing activities in various parts of the church, thanks to your regular giving.
You will notice our beautiful lawn is well taken care of, thanks to the professional mowers your offerings pay for throughout the growing season.
We provide two worship services, Sunday School, and a nursery through the summer. We also maintain a full staff and regular of-fice hours. As you can see, St. Andrew con-tinues to provide ministry year round, so please remember your pledges even when you are away. Thank you.

Witness & Mission We are providing Personal Care Bags to
CASA and the Salvation Army Women and Children’s Shelter for Mother’s Day. We continue to provide Micah’s meal bags to 15 students each weekend, and will be providing 24 back to school backpacks in August. Watch the back to school ads for bargains in July and August. REACH Craft Nights went very well this year, and will be continued next winter. We continue to support the Shepherd’s Table.
We would like to thank everyone for supporting the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. We received a thank you from Presbyterian Mission showing our 2016 do-nation of $1909.50, up from $789.72 in 2015. This year’s offering was $925.00. This does not include the fish box offering. This will be counted the first week in May, and a check will be sent to Presbytery the following week.
We received a newsletter from our mis-sionaries, Jed & Jenny Koball. There has been devastating flooding in Peru. If you would like to help with a donation to Pres-byterian Disaster Relief, place your dona-tions in a pew envelope marked “Peru”.
Wall of Sharing Youth Group Fundraiser
In July, we will travel to Big Creek in Kentucky, and have many opportunities to minister to the needs of this area. The Wall of Sharing Fundraiser can be your way of helping to raise the money needed to mis-sion to these areas. The steps are simple: choose an envelope with a dollar amount, put that amount in the envelope, then give the envelope to Pastor Mark. You can choose an envelope that is your birthday, favorite number, or give together with someone. We thank you for your generosi-ty!
