CHILDREN’S SERVICES PROGRAM

The Children’s Services Program at the Upper Valley Haven creates supports and opportunities for children who have experienced the trauma of homelessness. We believe parent commitment and involvement is crucial to success and follow-through so the Haven has framed the Byrne House family shelter as a total milieu for child growth and development. More than 10 staff members are dedicated to the well-being and progress of children and their parents.

The After-School Program is a key component of the Haven’s work with children. The program runs Monday through Friday from 2:30-5:00 pm for school-aged children who are current and former shelter guests. Thirty-four children are enrolled this year (2016-2017). For the past three years, the age span of the children in the program has increased, as they continue to come back to this resource that has real meaning for them. Three Haven staff members (two full-time and one part-time), an AmeriCorps member, and a team of volunteers from the community and the Center of Service at Dartmouth College provide mentoring and help with homework. Substantial time is invested in homework, followed by other activities. These might include art projects, outdoor sports activities, rock climbing, music, or shared reading time. With children having so many needs,

different activities are often going on at the same time. Underlying everything is attention to the life skills necessary for success in the world. Hygiene, table manners, formal and casual speech are all modeled and set as expectations for the children.

Two days of the week feature special and very popular programs once homework is completed. “Haven Chopped” was developed by students from Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth to introduce topics in nutrition and offer hands-on food preparation projects. The Financial Literacy program involves coaching with each child around acquiring and spending money. Each child has the opportunity to earn “Haven Dollars” through achieving attendance, performance, and behavioral goals. New this year on Wednesdays is Children’s Mindfulness, which helps children develop concentration and self-awareness.

All of the children have opportunities for enrichment activities they would not be able to access otherwise. Some of these occur during the school year, especially during vacation weeks, and others are part of the Summer Program, carried out in a “day camp” format. This past year, weekly themes were developed around career clusters, such as Architecture & Construction; Technology, Engineering & Math; Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources; and Law, Public Safety, and Corrections & Security. In addition to different activities and presenters based on these themes, children in the summer program enjoyed gardening in the mornings, swimming in the afternoons, and field trips on Wednesdays. Fifteen children participated in 2016.

HOW THE MUD BALL HELPS The 2016 Mud Ball raised $37,500 for Children’s Services at the Haven. These funds are essential to the successful implementation of these programs and to support the families we serve, all of whom are struggling with poverty and food insecurity. This event also helps with another important goal: raising awareness about Children’s Services at the Haven. Each year, this inspires new and increased donations, offers from volunteers and businesses who want to get involved, and other engagement.

INCREASING NEED Over the past five years, we have seen increases in need in all areas of our work, including the food shelf; our adult, family, and seasonal shelters; service coordination; and Children’s Services. We see more new individuals and families needing our support, and more people we have existing relationships with needing follow-up assistance to help them continue to move forward. We have been fortunate to move families out of the Haven’s shelter more quickly thanks to housing vouchers over the past two years. We’ve also experienced more families wanting to maintain their children in our ongoing programs, such as the After-School and Summer programs.

The Haven currently supports about 30 children daily and their needs vary. Some need one-on-one support and others can work and play easily in a group of students. We rely on the support of skilled volunteers and staff to maintain the safety and well-being of the entire group. The staff regularly take children on new adventures in the community to expose them to experiences that their parents might not be able to while they are living in crisis. We rely on the generous donations of time and money to continue these essential programs and to expand them to meet the ever-growing need.
