GERMANS IN SREM BETWEEN THE TWO

WORLD WARS (19181941)

SUMMARY

The German minority in Srem between the two wars constituted a significant de-mographic factor in the economic, cultural, and political life of Srem considering that according to 1921 and 1931 censuses 64,764 and 70,321 citizens of German nation-ality were registered respectively, constituting 15.9, and 15.7% of the entire popula-tion. As to religious denominations, a great majority 70% of German population in Srem belonged to the catholic church, 27% were Lutheran-Evangelicals, whereas there were only 3% of Calvinists-Reformers. The social structure of the German pop-ulation in Srem was characterized by the fact that 47% of the German minority mem-bers lived in cities where majority of them lived off agriculture, whereas 40% of the German city population worked in crafts and trade.

After the World War I, Novi Sad became the centre of German activities. Novi Sad seated headquarters of all organizations with the German national prefix in the Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes, whereas Srem lost its former significance in the political life of the German population. Despite all this, representatives of Srem Germans took active part in establishing German cultural, economic, and political organizations Kulturbund, Agraria, and the German Party. The most important among these representatives were certainly Dr. tefan Kraft and Dr. Hans Mozer. At the same time, these German organizations were active in the Srem region. During the 1920s, the German Party was the backbone of the German minoritys political life in Srem, as it was in the whole of the Kingdom. After the party was abolished

during the 6th January Dictatorship, Kulturbund de facto became the political repre-sentative of the German population. For this reason, the number of Kulturbunds affil-iates constantly grew in Srem in the 1930s, in an attempt to encompass the majority of the German population. Significant changes in activities of the German minori-ty took place during 1939 when the process of its Gleichschaltung (coordination) be-gan, thus creating foundations for disloyal attitude of a part of the German popula-tion during the April War.
