We have been going through a series on how to be confident in our chaotic world. With all the rumors of wars, ISIS killing everything in its path especially Christians, the Middle East falling apart, many of these rogue nations developing “nuclear power”. America is killing herself from within. Christian’s and their “free speech” are being (at the present time) shut down. Politicians stirring up tensions in every corner possible for their own political advancements, lying, stealing, making law for the people while exempting themselves.
Inner cities being destroyed from within, crazy murder rates, high unemployment, over the top entitlement culture, and a national debt out of control over 18 trillion (2.17 billion per day). Just to mention a few things…
In II Cor 3-5, the Apostle Paul “confident,” “competent,” and “bold” repeatedly in these chapters. And they simply remind us that when the world’s foundations are crumbling, we have a solid rock upon which to build our lives-----Jesus Christ. He teaches us that our confidence comes from trusting Christ, not ourselves (3:1-5). Paul also shares with us that our confidence comes from relying on grace, not law, for salvation (3:6-11). And he shares that our confidence comes from focusing on character, not reputations, for personal fulfillment (3:12-18)
Even King David wrote years before in Ps 27:1-5, “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour
me, it is my
enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.”
Now in II Cor 4:1-7, we learn that to be confident in these terrible days we need to let the light of Christ shine through us by being real, i.e. have a positive spirit, be a person of integrity, be a servant, and be transparent. In 4:1 it says, “Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.” Jesus lets us know in Matt 16:18 that He will build His church and the gates of hell will not overcome it. And He warned us in John 16:33 that we would have troubles in this world but to take heart. “For I have overcome the world” He says.
Church, with the strength and ministry of Christ we too can overcome the world by letting the light of Christ shine out of darkness.
Saved to Serve, Tim
Years ago I led a group of students and adults on a trip to Haiti. We partnered with a mission there that provided many opportunities to serve the community it was located in. You could do feeding programs for kids, visit a nursing home facility, or go visit those in prison. There was a birthing center, medical clinic, and pharmacy. There was an area that worked with disabled and mentally challenged children. There were
soccer camps, VBS type teaching times, and visits to an orphanage. And each day had its own random moments for unplanned service. It would be easy for you to assume that I took a group of adults and students to Haiti to be able to serve that community to improve their lives both physically and spiritually. You would be wrong.
Though I do have a responsibility to care for those who live in any part of the world and find themselves in any potential situation (think Love God, Love People), I do not kid myself into thinking that I had any significant impact on any one Haitian in that one week of life that will change Haiti. That wasn’t really my intention to begin with. I hoped to take a group of people and have their lives changed by experiencing what Haiti had to offer them. I think I succeeded in that endeavor.
The students I took have sought out, individually, opportunities to return and serve. The adults have broadened their understanding of missions and have had a fire lit in them to desire opportunities to impact the world in whatever way they can. We may not have changed Haiti, we may have impacted a few lives, but I know that the lives we took down there were changed for the better.
That’s the power of service. Sure, there is plenty of value in trying to care for other people more than you care about yourself. Sure, meeting someone else’s need above your own is in itself carrying out the great command. Caring for the least of these is exactly what Jesus tells us to do.
But service isn’t just about meeting their need; it’s also about meeting your need to place yourself not at the top. You need to consistently force yourself into a lower position. It causes you to find worth in someplace other than your abilities. It causes you to place Jesus in a greater position that yourself. It causes you to look a little bit more like Jesus. It creates a hunger and thirst for God.
You don’t have to go to Haiti to serve. In fact, you probably don’t have to look outside your own house. There are
opportunities abounding everywhere you look. Will you answer the call?

COMING IN JUNE/JULY IN KIDZ KONNECTION: Growing up, I always thought it’d be cool to be a superhero. Mostly because, well, fly-ing sounded like it would be AMAZING. But also because superheroes stood up for what was right regardless of how dangerous or how scary the situation. Their convic-tion drove them to find the courage to stand up to evil, even when no one else seemed to care or stood petrified with fear.
No matter what, the superhero came to the rescue. Given the chance, I thought that jumping into the storyline of my favorite superhero comic book sounded like some-thing I would want to do with my life. I guess it’s because when I was kid, I didn’t real-ize that I was already part of an amazing story. No one ever told me that it didn’t take some super power to act like a superhero.
I have a feeling there are a ton of kids out there who feel the same way. That’s why we’re taking the months of June and July to discover what it means to Stand Up: Get in the Story as we learn more about con-viction.
Conviction is standing for what’s right, even when others don’t.
Let’s take Jesus for example. Even for Jesus, the Son of God, it wasn’t always popular to do the right thing. Sometimes doing the right thing meant hanging out with tax collectors, blessing the little children, or even forgiving someone who had done some-thing wrong. No matter what it was that Jesus needed to do, He did it because it was the right thing to do.
But doing the right thing often made Jesus stand apart from some of the rich and powerful people of His time. They didn’t al-ways like what He was doing or saying, but Jesus never let those crowds persuade Him to go against what God, His Father, want-ed Him to do. Even when it meant going to the cross to die, Jesus knew that it was the right thing, and He did it.
Jesus was able to live with conviction because He knew the will of His Father, and that gave Him strength and courage. In the same way, God has given us the ability to know what is right and the ability to do it. You see, when we are fueled by God’s char-acter, we will stand up for the things that matter to God.

99 THOUGHTS FOR PARENTS OF TEENAGERS THE TRUTH ON RAISING TEENAGERS FROM PARENTS WHO HAVE BEEN
THERE
By Walt Mueller
READ WHAT THEY READ, WATCH WHAT THEY WATCH, AND LISTEN TO WHAT THEY LISTEN TO.
Sounds a bit scary – and it might be. But it’s necessary work if you want to raise teenag-ers who can navigate the complexities of life in today’s world and for the rest of their lives. By observing and questioning your children, you can quickly learn which specific cultural voices are speaking loud and clear into their lives. Then taking time to interact with those voices firsthand helps you to understand and relate to your children while equipping them to relate to the world around them, which is exactly what Jesus wants them to do. This helps us to raise teenagers who are wise enough to filter these voices in a way that allows them to discern the good from the bad. Don’t think that observing and learning about youth culture implies participation in or acceptance of all aspects of that youth culture. It simply means that you’re taking the time to know as much as you can about your children and their influential world, a necessary step toward equipping them to live as lights in the midst of darkness.
