Recent EventsOrthopaedic Masterclass Learning Media supported an Orthopaedic ‘Masterclass’ on the 31st May. This involved a live video and audio link with two-way communication from an operating theatre where Professor Barrett was carrying out a revision knee operation. This was relayed to approx 40 delegates in Lecture Theatre 2, SGH. In addition a live link was arranged to America after the surgery; this was in the form of an open discussion regarding the operation. This event was sponsored by ZIMMER and feedback was very good. If you are interested in this kind of teaching method please contact [email protected] or Ext 6561.

1st Interdisciplinary School in Wound Healing This “summer school” type event was held in the Education Centre at SUHT on May 25th & 26th. The Faculty comprised a number of colleagues with an international reputation in wound healing and the registrants were trained podiatrists, tissue viability nurses, and a couple of scientists from both the University as well as industry. The meeting was facilitated by unrestricted educational grants that received from Smith & Nephew and KCI.

The delegates were welcomed by Mike Potter, School of Podiatry, University of Southampton. Most presentations were interactive, the themes being leg swelling, infection, systematic choice of dressings, what and how to measure, the role of Health Economics, and the Diabetic Foot. The workshops (on debridement, on bandaging techniques and on ‘how to use a vascular laboratory’) were fully subscribed, interactive and very enjoyable for those who presented as well as those who attended.

Based on verbal and formal feedback, the event well met the needs of the delegates who have asked the event to be presented again in 2007. Which has been agreed! For more details please contact [email protected]

Ophthalmic Nurses Study DayThe Southampton Nurses Ophthalmic Group held a successful study day on May 12th with more than 100 nurses from across the South. The topics discussed included the RCN ophthalmic competencies, the role of the visual impairment officer, contact lenses, laser eye surgery and vitrectomy. The day coincided with international nurses day.

A workshop in debridement in progress. Luc Teot, Head of Burns Unit, Lapeyronnie Hospital, Montpellier, France can be seen in the

background instructing eager eager “debriders”

A group from Podiatry engaged in serious discussion (about wound healing no doubt!!)

Objective Structured Clinical Examinations(otherwise known as OSCEs!)Clinical Skills has just completed a phenomenal 3 months of frenetic activity preparing medical students for examination. In June 170 students took part in their OSCE examinations and in July over 200 medical students were assessed in clinical skills as part of the intermediate exams. These took place in the Clinical Skills rooms as well as three clinical outpatient areas.

While the OSCE exam days are busy events led predominantly by the School of Medicine, the weeks before see a fantastic amount of hard work put in by the Clinical Skills team who lead revision sessions and vast amounts of behind the scenes of work preparing the departments to run these sessions.

Supporting Learning in Practice for Healthcare Scientists/AHPsThe first multiprofessional study day to provide some training and support for those supervising learners was run on 29th June. There were 11 participants from variety of professions including dieticians, audiology, pharmacy, speech and language therapy, radiology and medical technology. The aim of the day was an introduction to the mentoring, supervising and educating role. Topics covered included learning styles, role of the educator, tools to assist training and development and evaluation.

The speakers included Julie Martin, Education Lead HCS and AHPs, Felicity Hargreaves, Workforce Development Directorate and Michelle Cerrato, Education and Training Pharmacist. A workbook was provided for all those attending including references and books available in the SUHT library on this topic.

Feedback from the participants was good, particularly from those new to this role. The workshops and role-play were found to be very useful and the participants enjoyed the multiprofessional aspect to the day. ‘Feedback’ and ‘managing poor performance’ were suggested as follow up topics. It is hoped to repeat this day in the autumn. For further details contact [email protected].
