Here we are at the end of another school term and halfway through the year. I thank all members of our school community for the efforts that have been made throughout the term. NAIDOC Week

This week we celebrate NAIDOC week at school, which falls during the holidays. On Tuesday, all students in Year 3-6 participated in a ‘virtual excursion’ with schools from across NSW. The students, who were in the library, used a microphone and web-camera

to communicate and interact with the students from other public schools. The lesson helped them develop an appreciation for the importance of caring for and connecting to country.

This year’s NAIDOC theme ‘Heal Country’ will also be the focus of this Thursday’s excursion. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to come together as a network of schools for this special event. This enables us to invite a number of guest performers and artists as well as allowing students to build connections. Parents are welcome to join us, however all students attending must come to school as usual and travel by bus to Jilliby PS.

Kinder 2022

The second of our school tours was held last week for students starting at Somersby Public School in 2022. We welcomed a number of new families as well as seeing some familiar faces. If you have, or know of anyone with a child ready to start school next year, we encourage you to contact the office as soon as possible to enrol. Please also spread the word to other local families that now is the time to begin the enrolment process. Enrolment forms can be collected from the office or completed online via our website. Dates for our orientation program have been set and we look forward to finalising our class numbers in preparation for a positive start to the year.

Soccer

Our soccer team have been training hard since late last term, with the wonderful dedication of Mrs Hudson. Unfortunately, their skills were not quite enough to beat Luddenham PS last Thursday in the PSSA small schools’ knockout competition. As expected, our students showed great teamwork and stamina. I would like to thank all of the parents who assisted with transporting the team to Penrith for the game.

Public Speaking Winners

The students who spoke in last week’s public speaking finals gripped the audience’s attention with a great range of topics from vivid personal experiences, an urge to ban all plastic and special individual passions. The students had prepared thoroughly to write, rehearse and deliver their interesting and entertaining speeches. Guest judges, Mrs Lazzaroni and Mrs Wilson, had the very difficult task of selecting winners to speak at the Central Coast competition in August. Well done to James, Boston, Eli, Emily, Edward, Lexi and Connor for making it to the next round.

Uniforms

Somersby Public School students uphold the school values of respect, responsibility and excellence through wearing their school uniform proudly every day. A few reminders about our uniform:

• Black shoes and white socks should be worn every day, except for sports days.

• Jumpers purchased at zone, regional and state sporting and creative arts competitions can be worn to school on Fridays, if students choose.

• Year 6 polos can be worn instead of the regular polo.

• Leggings are not to be worn alone with the school polo. Stockings can be worn underneath the skirt or skort.

• Unisex long pants and cotton-lined trackpants are available from the uniform shop. Other tracksuit pants are not part of the Somersby PS uniform.

We appreciate your support in upholding our uniform standards.

Movie Day

Year 6 have decided to hold a movie day this Friday as both a fundraising event and a reward for a successful term. A G-rated movie has been selected that supports the learning in this term’s science focus strand - Living World. For $2, students will receive some popcorn, a drink and watch a movie that highlights some animals that have adapted to different environments. Year 6 raise money each year to subsidise the costs of their polo shirts, their farewell dinner and gift to the school.

Road Safety

I would like to remind everyone to exercise care and follow road rules around our school. The queue of cars for our kiss and ride line has been extending through the bus stop zone. This prevents the bus being able to stop safely to collect students. There is plenty of space near the general store to park and wait if the queue has already extended past the school gate. At 2:50pm, classes assemble under the COLA so they can be escorted by a teacher to the pick-up area. Students cannot be dismissed before this time. We thank all families for their cooperation in allowing everyone to get their children home safely.

Pre-Service Teacher

For the past four weeks, Eucalypt have had a pre-service teacher from The University of Newcastle working alongside Mrs Gowans in their classroom. Miss Simpson has also worked with all classes for creative arts lessons. This Friday, we farewell Miss Simpson and wish her all the best for her studies.

School Band

During 2020, COVID restrictions resulted in our school band and music lessons being placed on hold. Since that

time, our wonderful band coordinator and teacher, Mrs Heaney, has had to cease in the role. I have made contact with a number of local companies to discuss options for recommencing a band in the future. Further details and/or options will be communicated next term

Finally, I wish everyone a restful holiday. I hope that all families have the opportunity to spend some quality time together during the school holidays.
