Snapshot Week 7 Term 4
Friday 27 November 2020
Dear Families,
As my time at Rose Park is quickly coming to an end, I will be commencing handover to
Dora Iuliano, our incoming Principal. Once again, I would like to say how much I have
enjoyed my time and wish everyone health, happiness and success in the future.
I can now share class structures for 2021; placements are being finalised and we do not
know all of our teachers at this stage. Further information will follow as soon as it is available.
Class structures 2021
We look forward to some stability as we near the end of term, in the hope that our planned
student activities can go ahead. We also hope that the weather is kind to us for our
rescheduled Sports Day next Friday 4 December, Week 8. Activities on the day will only take
place within school grounds, and this will mean some changes to events. As previously
noted, parent attendance at Sports Day will not be possible this year, but we will add lots of
pictures to the Snapshot next week!

IBPYP Update - Year 5
Our current unit of inquiry is based
around the Central Idea of ‘The true
costs of wants and needs’. Students
are inquiring into their perspectives on
needs vs wants, their responsibility in
resourcing the needs of present and
future generations and factors that
influence consumer purchasing
directions. Their summative assessment
had them select a product of their
choice to explore the lifecycle and
timeline of that product to determine
its true cost.
Parents & Friends Update
Second Hand Uniform Stall - unfortunately the second hand uniform stall scheduled for Friday
27 November had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. P&F will run a stall in Term 1,
2021. In the meantime, you can donate and buy uniforms at the Virtual Garage Sale and
we'd really encourage people to get involved with this to help new families in our school
community get uniforms for their kids starting in 2021.
Virtual Garage Sale - the start of the Virtual Garage Sale was postponed due to the Circuit
Breaker Lockdown but will kick off this weekend. We'd love you to get involved and donate
items that your children have outgrown and that can be used by other families in our school
community. Suggestions include unwanted sporting equipment, school uniforms (especially
in small bundles), toys, book bundles, football boots, ballet slippers, desks, etc. You can get
involved via the Rose Park Primary School Sustainability Group facebook page.

Chromebook Second Hand Sale
As many of our students are leaving Rose Park Primary School at the end of the year, we are
helping set up a 'Second-hand Chromebook Sale' for the school community. While the
school is not directly involved in the sale/purchase of the Chromebooks, we can help
connect buyers and sellers, by creating a list of families wanting to sell, and passing on your
details to those wanting to buy.
If you are considering selling your Chromebook, please complete the following Google Form:

Athlete’s Foot Donation
The Burnside Athlete’s Foot store has made a donation of
$350.00 as part of the School Rewards program - $5 from
every pair of shoes sold to families and friends of Rose Park
Primary School students will be donated to the school. The
Athlete’s Foot Burnside is a family owned business; let Byron
and Allison, or one of their staff know that you’re part of the
RPPS family next time you’re in buying shoes. Thank you to
Byron for visiting to present the generous donation!
PE Update - Week 7
Premiers Be Active Challenge
Congratulations to the 500 students who participated in the Premiers Be Active Challenge
this year. Each student received a medal for their efforts and as a collective group, Rose Park
Primary School was awarded a $1000.00 grant to spend on additional sporting equipment for
next year. Well done everyone!
Gymnastics - Sporting Schools
In Week 6, some of the junior primary classes were lucky enough to have a turn at
gymnastics, run through the Sporting Skills program. Students had an amazing time, with the
tumble track being a favourite for most. They learned about shapes that they need to make
with their bodies when participating in gymnastics and had a turn on different equipment run
as a circuit based program.

Reading in the Early Years
Extract from a Media Release 03/11/2020 | John Gardner MP | Better Services
Reading levels for South Australian Year 1 students have risen again, as results from the 2020 Phonics Screening Check show significant improvement for the second year in a row. 63 per cent of Year 1 students met or exceeded the expected achievement level this year, up from 52 per cent last year, and from 43 per cent in 2018 when the check was first introduced for all Year 1 students.
South Australia was the first state in Australia to implement a statewide Phonics Screening Check for students in 2018, implementing a key election commitment for which the Marshall Liberal Government had long argued. The simple 5-7 minute check consists of 40 words which are delivered through a mixture of 20 real words and 20 pseudo-words. An expected achievement score of 28 out of 40 is used as a marker to assist teachers in identifying how a student is tracking against the Australian Curriculum.
Education Minister John Gardner said the cumulative improvement in results indicated that schools were implementing the right measures and practices to improve literacy learning.
“This dramatic statewide improvement shows South Australian public schools are delivering impactful literacy learning and support to all students to progress in their reading. An improvement of 20 percentage points in just two years is a massive step forward and should be seen as a big tick of approval for the reforms we have put in place.
“The introduction of the Phonics Check has enabled a fresh emphasis on the quality of reading instruction in our schools and, while the signs continue to be very encouraging, we will continue to do more to keep improving literacy outcomes for our students.
“I am confident these results will encourage our hard working teachers and education leaders to keep up the momentum to improve the reading and literacy outcomes for children and young people across the state.”
“These results should give parents and the wider community every confidence in the quality of teaching in reading that is occurring in our public schools.”
In 2019, Rose Park embarked on a journey to introduce Reception students to InitiaLit, an explicit evidence based reading program. In 2020, InitiaLit was introduced into Year 1 and the intentional and targeted approach will roll into Year 2 in 2021.
The success of the program is evident in our Year 1 Phonics Screening Data, below.
We congratulate our Reception and Year 1 teachers in being open-minded and courageous
in their implementation of the program; their commitment is testament to these fantastic
results.
End of Year Concert Update
The concert will now be held on Monday 7 December, but unfortunately due to advice from
SA Health and the Department for Education we are unable to safely have parents attend.
Classes will perform for each other during the school day. We are aiming at being able to share a recording with families through your child’s SeeSaw account. Thanks again to
everyone for your amazing support and understanding.
