IB PYP Update - Year 5 – Sharing the Planet

Central Idea - Plants and animals live in diverse environments.

Throughout Term 2, Year 5 students are acquiring a greater understanding of how plants and

animals live in diverse environments through undertaking several inquiry-based assessments.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of this Central Idea in a summative assessment

to be undertaken later in the term.

The first step in this development of understanding asked students to produce a graphic

organiser which depicts a range of environments in which living things can live. Students

inquired into the diversity of environments. Students were able to show their creative flair by

designing a graphic organiser to highlight the diversity between their chosen environments.

The key to success being the way that they were able to carefully consider and illustrate the

characteristics of the environment, and what sets it apart from other environments.

At the completion of the graphic organiser, students participated in a ‘Gallery Walk’ which

allowed them to examine each other’s creative designs and provide constructive feedback

to several of their peers. This ‘Gallery Walk’ took place between all Year 5 classes and

students were highly engaged and inquisitive whilst viewing their peers’ creations. Well done

Year 5 students!

Civics & Citizenship Incursion - Year 4

The Year 4 classes, as well as Mr Michel's

Year 7 class, had a visit from the South

Australian Premier this week. Steven

Marshall was invited to speak to our

students about Civics and Citizenship for

our new Unit of Inquiry 'How we Organise

Ourselves'.

The Premier spoke on a range of different

things, such as his school days, his aspirations and motivations as a young person, the role of

the premier for the state, the responsibility of state government, and the process of passing a

Bill in Parliament. He also answered a range of student questions such as:

What motivated you to be Premier, and what job did you do before being Premier?

What was your primary school like and what was your favourite/least favourite subject?

What do you have to do to become a popular politician?

How long do you work for and do you see your family much?

What is your relationship like with the opposition?

How do you repair a situation if you make a mistake?

What do you like most about your job and what is your proudest moment as Premier?

"I enjoyed seeing the Premier for the first time” - Matthew G

“I liked the way he thought about our questions before answering” - Toby Mc D

“I know he had a furniture factory and he thought that would be his job when he was

growing up” - Faaris K

“I learnt that the government reduced water rates yesterday” - Jonah C

“I was really happy because I got to welcome the premier at the gate” - Benji M

“I learnt that SA was the first to introduce a secret ballot for elections” - Abby P

“Sometimes the opposition and the government agree, and sometimes they disagree in

question time” - Amelia O

“In South Australia they are working towards opening a rocket launcher station” – Akshita Y

SRC Fun Friday - Twinnies!
