It has been lovely to feel welcomed back after 6 weeks Long Service Leave at the start of this term. I thoroughly enjoyed, 8 weeks in total, travelling the world. It was an amazing experience and one I’m very fortunate to have had.

I’d like to acknowledge Julie James, the Acting Principal during my leave, for the way she seamlessly stepped in and worked so well with our leadership team, our staff, students and families. I’ve returned with a renewed sense of perspective around what makes Rose Park PS such a fabulous and well regarded school; the ongoing and tireless commitment from all our staff, our teachers, Co educators and Front Office staff, along with our Groundsman. They consistently go above and beyond to ensure our students access the best education, including a huge range of experiences through incursions, excursions and local, interstate and overseas camps and tours.

Children also have multiple and varied opportunities to perform including: being a part of Wakakirri, the Festival of Music, the Winter Concert, our Musical and through assemblies. They also participate in an ever widening range of sporting activities and can be congratulated on an outstanding effort at the recent SAPSASA athletics day.

Another highlight has been the Year 5 Exhibition held last Wednesday evening – a phenomenal effort by all involved. In particular I’d like to thank the Year 5 teachers, Mat Wilton, Brad Schutz, Addy Latsienka and also Mandy Raymond, our Deputy Principal and PYP Coordinator, Renee Lynn and our Music and Dance team, Chris Narroway and Kim Copeland for teaching the children their song and dance routine.

Year 6/7 Festival of Music Congratulations to our Year 6/7 Choir who performed brilliantly at the Festival Theatre on Tuesday evening. The concert was one of the best we’ve seen in recent years, highly entertaining.

It was topped off by having one of our Year 6 students, Angus C as one of the two hosts for the evening. Emily and Claudia B were lead choreographers and Asira S had an amazing soloist appearance! I know staff and parents felt a huge sense of pride in all of our Rose Park Primary school children. Thank you to Chris Narroway for her expertise and talent as a choir trainer and also to Kim Copeland and Karsan Hutchinson for their support. As part of the Festival of Music, we also had our recorder students playing in the foyer of the Festival Theatre; celebrating their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

NAPLAN Last week we sent home NAPLAN results for our Year 3, 5 and 7 students. This year all our students completed the assessments online, except for writing which was completed on paper. Interestingly, our Year 7 results overall have been outstanding. The students responded well to the online environment and persisted with the way the assessments differentiated each step of the way, depending on the individual student’s ability to answer each question. Thanks to all teachers involved, including Michael Porter, our Digital Technology/innovative Pedagogy Coordinator and IT technicians from IPAU and, of course, Renee Lynn who had NAPLAN Online support service on speed dial!

Although we’ve just completed our Student Led Conferences, please talk to teachers or contact us if you do have any queries around the NAPLAN assessments.

Out of School Hours Care Throughout this year our OSHC Committee, and in turn the Rose Park PS Governing Council, has been going through an intensive review of our OSHC service (currently under the auspices of Camp Australia - their contract is due to expire on 14th November 2018). After extensive debate and seeking of feedback about the current service from families and the children who access the service, the decision has been taken to implement a site run facility as of the 15th November 2018. We are currently in the process of appointing an OSHC Director, with a decision to be made by the end of this term. We are hoping to attracting high quality staff committed to working with our children. For the remainder of 2018, OSHC will continue to be in the Hall and kitchen area, however, in 2019 the facility will transition across our site to the Performing Arts space/Japanese Room. The rationale behind this shift involves many factors, including a much cosier, comfortable and pleasant environment, which includes

inside toilets, user friendly kitchen facilities and closer proximity to playgrounds. This change in space will also provide easier access for drop off and pick up, plus the hall will be available for sport training before and after school.

Our OSHC committee welcomes new members, especially at this critical time in establishing a new ser-vice. Mathspace Competition Final mention and congratulations to Addy Latisenka and her Year 5 class for coming second in the national Mathspace competition. Check the link below to see just how well they have done! The children have won $400 and a free trial of Mathspace in Term 4. https://mathspace-1.wistia.com/medias/snoktom71f Di Burrell Principal

Room 19 students have been participating in the Mathspace Teacher Challenge Competition. Mathspace is an interactive mathematics program aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Our students were placed twice in the top 3 weekly awards and second overall out of a list of 1300 classes across Australia. Congratulations to our mathematicians in Room 19!

“The choices we make have an impact on our environment” Throughout Term 3, the Year 5 students have been vigorously working towards the Exhibition; which is used to signify the culmination of the PYP program. The Exhibition, held on Wednesday 19th September in the iCentre, was attended by many families and friends of the Year 5 students. During the day, all classes were invited to visit the Exhibition to provide a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the evening. Our students were great inquirers, asking lots of challeng-ing questions, while the Year 5’s had a chance to showcase their knowledge at an appropriate level for their visitors. During the Exhibition, the students displayed a number of PYP attitudes including: Cooperation, Curiosity and Commitment. They also demonstrated the Learner Profile attributes of: Inquirers, Reflective and Principled through their behaviour from the PYP. The feedback gathered on the night was overwhelmingly positive as those who attended were astounded by the amount of knowledge and learning that the students had acquired during the process. I would like to acknowledge the teachers who have supported the students from the beginning to the end, and the staff who have mentored one or more groups of students during the process. Congratulations to all Year 5 students and teachers involved. Renee Lynn Deputy Principal

If you have any spares, or double up items, I would greatly appreciate them to take with us. Please deposit any items you wish to donate in the collection box at the front office.

Term 3 Rose Park Debating News Welcome to Round 4 of Rose Park Primary School Debating. This was the final round of the competition before the finals. The topic for this round was,: ‘That we should have a complete right to freedom of speech.’ This topic was certainly challenging and the students considered, analysed and modified their defini-tion and speeches on more than one occasion, to understand the concept of ‘complete right’ and ‘freedom of speech’. What assisted our students is the wonderful feedback by the adjudicators after each debate; allowing teams to continually improve their understanding and debating performance. Results: Rose Park III narrowly lost to Saint Girls II Rose Park I won against Walford III Rose Park IV won against Rose Park II Rose Park V won against Scotch I This was the final round of the competition before finals. At this stage, we are waiting for the South Australian Debating Association to calculate the 8 teams, across all three zones, who will enter the next stage of the competition. The outcome is decided by the winning team having the most points across all three zones at the conclusion of the minor rounds. A team receives two points for a win, one point for a loss and zero points for a loss when they forfeit. Where there are two or more teams on the same number of points at the end of the season, their ranking is determined by reference to the average net margins of their wins. There are three rounds in the finals, quarter, semi and grand finale. Finalists will need to win each round to advance to the next stage. Finally, a big shout out to our parent helper, Rahimah Watts, who assisted in coaching and supporting the students during the season. To all the students who have participated in debating this year, you have demonstrated excellent debating skills and have shown Rose Park Primary School are fierce adversaries! Just a reminder that there is no coaching until we are contacted by the South Australian Debating Association regarding finals. We have been advised that this should occur at the beginning of Term 4. Please be aware that the finals preparation time is very limited, and students will have less than two weeks to plan and present their debates. Also, could all outstanding debating fees be finalised before the end of the term. Regards, The Year 6/7 Team Michael Michell, Zara Lygo, Karsan Hutchinson and Jane Hopper

Music News

The Public Schools Music Festival This enormous annual event has fostered many talented students across the ARTs disciplines. Rose Park Pri-mary School has always been well represented and this year our ‘stars are shining’ across the whole 2 weeks.

The many and varied roles of chorister, singer, instrumentalist, dancer or presenter all require a great deal of rehearsal and commitment. It is a significant experience to sing or play in an ensemble and to perform and present outside of the school context.

Tremendous work from orchestra members - Anson C, Nick B, Michelle F, Zoe G, vocal soloist, Asira S, choreography leaders Chloe H and Claudia B, assisting artist Eliza B-R and hosts Angus C and Brooke T-H.

As part of the Festival of Music, some of our recorder students will be performing on Friday 28 September and the Rose Park Concert Band will be on stage 1 on 22 September for the foyer concert series. Thank you to the large number of parents and friends who will be supporting these performers. Thank you to both Jan Booth and Peter Young for their work with these ensembles. On Tuesday 18 September the Festival Choir participated in what was an emotional and energising performance with our students representing our school in an exemplary manner. The revamped Festival Theatre provided a fabulous backdrop for a sensational performance.

You’re a Star There are some very talented people who take part in performances and competitions as part of their ARTS/music learning in the community. Late last month Michelle F won First Prize in her Flute Solo Division and Second Prize in the Flute Duet Division of the Adelaide Eisteddfod. This is very prestigious event in the Adelaide music calendar and Michelle performed exceptionally well. Ryder H has just completed his participation in the Adelaide season with Priscilla at the Festival Theatre. This, I am sure was a fabulous experience for Ryder and his performance was very professional.
