Getting Over SmokingThe nicotine in cigarette smoke is addictive .

This means that, as a smoker, your body hasgotten used to a certain level of nicotine. Afteryou stop smoking, you may feet some body andmood changes. As your body adjusts to theabsence of the nicotine that you used to getfrom cigarettes, you may be :

∎ IRRITABLE : At first, without nicotine, you mayfeel nervous or touchy. Try exercising: it willhelp you feel better .

∎ TIRED: Nicotine is a stimulant, so when youaren't smoking anymore, you may feel tired .

∎ TROUBLE SLEEPING: You may wake up oftenduring the night. Also, you may dream aboutsmoking .

∎ HUNGER: People may think that their urge fora cigarette is really a hunger pang and eat toget rid of it . Often this results in weight gain .Try drinking a glass of cold water instead ofsnacking .

∎ COUGH, DRY MOUTH : Ex-smoker's cough is theway that the body gets rid of the mucusclogging your lungs. Also, when you stopsmoking, your body won't produce as muchmucus, so your mouth may feel dry.

∎ DEPRESSION: Some ex-smokers say that givingup cigarettes is like losing a best friend . Boutsof crying are common . These feelings willpass. Smoking is not the answer .
