    The government has approved a new pay scale for its employees with a highest basic pay of Tk78,000 and a minimum of Tk 8,250, allowing an across the grade hike ranging from !" to "0"percent#

    $n officer who %oins government service by clearing the &'( e)aminations will now get a basic payof Tk 22,000, to which will be added house rent in accordance with the area of residence andmedical reimbursements#

    In a move that has drawn mixed reactions, the highly a nticipated pay co mmission report has p roposed upto more than doubled salaries f or public se rvants, with the proposed lowest to the highest basic sa larygrades ranging between Tk8,200 and Tk80,000.

    The latest proposal sees a higher spi ke than the previous p ay commissions: the two most recentcommissions i n 2005 and 2009 had asked for 94% and 96% hikes r espectively, while the currentcommission has r ecommended up to 112.5% salary h ike, according to the Finance Ministry.

    The E ighth National Pay and Service C ommission (NPSC) Chairman Muhammad Farashuddin subm ittedthe nal report to F inance Minister AMA Muhith ye sterday, recommending the government to sp end63.7% more on its em ployees.

    The c ommission also suggested that all kinds o f deputationappointments b e cancelled in the government administration, Farashuddin said, adding that thegovernment has a lso been advised to introduce an option to allow public s ervants t o retire after 20 yearsof service, instead of the existing 25 years.

    He added that the salary h ike p roposal would have little impact to the annual enhancement of budget andrevenue earning of the country.

    The massive salary h ikes w ere proposed as a n incentive to draw in better educated talents i nto publicservice, to raise the nancial status o f government employees, and to keep them in service to ensuregood governance to an expanding economy, Farashuddin said
