2 Careers Guide

Universities and employers agree that we need to develop highly skilled professionals to meet the challenges of an ever changing and competitive global market. Our graduates need to have not only exceptional technical competencies but to be able to intelligently apply their learning in the work place. Businesses are looking for a pool of graduate talent with effective communication skills, (reading, writing, speaking and listening). They need to be more informed, globally responsible citizens engaged in ethical practice.

Through a range of experiences, students should develop technical skills, maturity, self-reliance and initiative and an appreciation of the workplace, all of which can only be explored to a limited extent if education is solely classroom based. Students should concurrently develop skills through part time work, voluntary work, community participation and sporting activities. Self-assessment and outside the classroom co-curricula activities are mandatory if students want to have a competitive edge in the employment market.

Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM) faculty and staff are dedicated to providing industry with work ready engineering and MBA graduates. We are creating stronger links to business through providing employment opportunities, liaising with business and connecting with valuable resources such as our alumni. Our aim is to produce graduates who will be attuned to the needs and practices of business, and thus able to bring immediate productivity to an organisation upon graduation.

CAREERS HUBThe Careers Hub is a focal point for students and provides career guidance and counseling services, encouraging and supporting students to take responsibility for their own career planning. The Careers Hub exists to provide students with comprehensive careers guidance and placement services. The careers team:

• Provide one-on-one careers advice• Assist you with job applications • Help you prepare your resume • Prepare you for the interviews • Provide pre-placement training to enhance your technical and soft skills.

The careers team is responsible for organising campus recruitment drives and providing graduate employment opportunities to final year students. Students will have the opportunity to apply for graduate positions as provided by the careers team. Recruitment of final year students starts each year around August and graduate placements continue over a 12 month period.

A DEGREE ALONE WILL NOT GUARANTEE YOU A GRADUATE POSITION

From August each year the Placement Team arranges for many organisations to visit the CIT and JITM campus. The one day recruitment drive involves a lengthy and rigorous interview process. Final year students can expect to complete an aptitude test, verbal and numerical tests, a technical test, take part in group discussions and be required to present yourself for personal interview with the Human Resource (HR) team. The qualities and skills employers are evaluating you on are:

• English (both written and spoken): Meet the required English language needed to perform in a business setting.

• Technical ability: - Being able to apply technology learnt in class effectively in the work place

• Knowledge: - Understanding what you have learnt in class

• Generic Skills:- Communication, Teamwork, leadership, problem solving, decision making and self management

Employers Feedback

AccentureRecruitment process: Written Test, Technical and HR Interview150 students completed the written test and only 15 students were shortlisted. After the technical and HR Interview a total number of 5 students were given offer letters.

Employer CommentsStudents preformed poorly in all areas of the recruitment process. Students were unable to complete a test in program writing and flowcharting. They could not communicate effectively, both their written and verbal English was inadequate. One student could not speak a sentence of English properly.
