WELCOME

Message from the Festival CoordinatorIt gives me great pleasure to present the 5th Dunedin Celtic Arts Festival. Here we have a com-prehensive programme of events across a wide range of arts and activities, with something in the mix for everyone. It is not without a keen sense of place we say, “It’s who we are.” The festival strives to give a perspective on who we have become 4 and 5 generations on from the first Scottish set-tlement of Dunedin. It is forward-looking and contemporary while acknowledging the legacy of our ancestors and the Treaty of Waitangi.

To visitors to our town, haere mai, fàilte, welcome.

Every attempt has been made to price our events so that they are accessible to everyone, visitor and citizen alike – many are gold-coin donation and some are free. My sincere thanks to the hard work-ing committee that has organised the festival: the best reward for them would be to see you at one of these events. Fàilte gu Cheilteach Dun Eidean.

A concert recital of Celtic-related chamber music works, known as drawing-room music. Guest appearance by medieval music ensemble Rare Byrds. From the mid-17th century onward, as Baroque music began to replace the traditional harpers and balladeers in the houses of both the old and the new aristocracy in the Celtic lands, tra-ditional airs, dances and songs were incorporated, taken up by classical composers and musicians of both the concert hall and the drawing room. This concert contains songs from Robbie Burns and Thomas Moore, and music from Carolan, Haydn and Britten, from the blind Welsh harper John Parry and the virtuoso royal harper John Thomas. There are echoes of harper and soprano Mary O’Hara and harper-composer Derek Bell. The baroque soprano voice of Pepe Becker and the virtuosity of harper Helen Webby are ideal vehicles to conjure the enchant-ment of this genteel Celtic tradition.

Rare Byrds is a Dunedin early music ensemble which formed in 2009; a mixed consort of recorders, viol, spinet, nyckelharpa, smallpipes and percussion. Their repertoire covers the whole range of early music from Medieval to Baroque, with a predilec-tion for lively renaissance dance music.

10 CONCERT EVENTS

The Secondary Schools Music FestivalDate: Tuesday 27th September

Time: 6:30 pm

Venue: Dunedin Town Hall

Cost: $10/$5 (door sales only)

This year the Secondary Schools Music Festival is proud to be offering a programme with an emphasis on Irish, Scottish and English music, and is pleased to be under of the umbrella of the Dunedin Celtic Arts Festival.

The Otago Secondary Schools Music Festival is a concert cel-ebration of communal music making and achievement for sec-ondary school students of Otago. The upcoming 2011 show will be the Festival’s 42nd annual concert.

The Festival Concert attracts some 700 students from up to 20 schools from the Otago area. School groups come from as far as Oamaru, Balclutha, the Catlins, Alexandra and Cromwell.

The show features a massed choir, orchestra, concert band, string orchestra and jazz band. It also includes several spots for individual school groups to display their talents. A feature of the concerts is that we showcase individual school groups who have achieved success in that year. So a show would generally include the winners of the year’s chamber music competition, Smokefree Rockquest and Big Sing.

Another regular feature is the inclusion of a guest, by virtue of the Trustpower Tertiary Music Scholarship, awarded to an ex-participant of the festival who is continuing their music studies at a tertiary level.

Bob McNeillThree-time Tui award winner, Best NZ Folk Album, Bob McNeill is one of New Zealand’s best known folk artists for his work solo and with Ben the Hoose. An innova-tive songwriter, his songs have been covered by artists in New Zealand, Scotland, Australia and the US A . An expatriate Scot, he now divides his time between New Zealand and Scotland.

McNeill’s musical and song writing style is a hybrid of the Celtic music of his native Scotland and the American New Folk and Americana styles.

Davy StuartOriginally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Davy was cutting his musical teeth at a time of the huge growth in inter-est in Celtic music in Europe and many hours were spent on the motorways of Europe with the pioneer Scottish band Alba, touring in France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Holland. Many bands later he met up with piper and flute-player extraordinaire, Jimmy Young, eventually culminating in the formation of the Scots band Rua – the band which brought them both to New Zealand in the late eighties, where both have remained. Rua were based in Christchurch from 1989 and the music continued with many club and Festival appear-ances around Australasia with Davy claiming three NZ Folk Album of the Year Awards for work with Rua and Claddagh. For the past nine years he has performed regularly with Helen Webby, Principal Harpist of the Christchurch Symphony.

Davy is also a respected luthier whose instruments are highly sought after and are played by many of the top musicians in Celtic music today.

Pepe BeckerOriginally from Nelson, Pepe started out as a choris-ter, pianist and oboist in various local groups. Moving to Wellington in 1985, she developed a keen interest in Early Music and became a founder member of The Tudor Consort. She soon began performing profes-sionally as a soprano and has sung alongside inter-nationally renowned Early Music singers such as Emma Kirkby, Richard Wistreich and Andreas Scholl, travelling to Europe in 1991 to further her training in Baroque Singing. In 1993, Pepe, set up her own vocal consort, Baroque Voices, which was the vocal group in the Musica Sacra concert series that ran for ten years in St Mary of the Angels, along with several recordings for Radio NZ Concert, and various albums, including David Farquhar’s “Half a Century of Song” and with bass David Morriss, the NZ S O and harpist Helen Webby. Helen WebbyBorn in Whangarei, Helen Webby began playing the harp at the age of twelve, graduating in 1989 undertaking postgraduate studies in The Netherlands and complet-ing a Masters degree in Harp and Music Teaching from the Hochschule for Music in Hamburg. While based in Germany Helen led a busy career as a chamber and orchestral musician, before returning to New Zealand in 2000 as Principal Harp with the Christchurch Symphony. Her subsequent concerto appearances, solo recitals and chamber recitals have been warmly acclaimed by crit-ics. Helen toured for Chamber music NZ and Arts on Tour NZ, premiered New Zealand works at the 2006 American Harp Society Convention, and performed concerts for the Brunei Music Society. Zealand composers Gareth Farr and Chris Cree-Brown and toured a programme of new works with traditional music for Chamber Music NZ.

Chris Penman

A singer for all seasons.Originally from Edinburgh, Chris emigrated with her parents in her childhood. Her father, respected tradi-tional singer Jack Penman, was part of the assisted passage scheme designed to bring tradesmen to New Zealand in the sixties.

Singing has been part of Chris’s life from the very beginning, family “sings” were and still are an integral part of life. Since the release of her acclaimed album” Portobello Years” with Mike Moroney in 1988, Chris has performed at all the major festivals in New Zealand as well as appearances abroad. She has toured with the Warratahs in the duo The Bay Gypsies, and recently, in a return to her roots, with the rest of the Penman family leading to the release of their C D “Home Made Jam” in 2009 at The Auckland Folk Festival. A highlight for Chris was supporting Dick Gaughan at the 2009 Celtic Arts Festival. More recently she has been performing in col-laboration with singer/songwriter Bob McNeill singing traditional and contemporary material.

Chris has a powerful voice that really moves the listener and never fails to mesmerise as she tells her story in song. In whatever genre she pursues, she has the ability to draw in the audience with her honest soulful style and a tone that few singers possess.

Anna RugisNew Zealand-born singer Anna Rugis gained a broad range of professional experience through her career as a session musician in New Zealand and Great Britain, touring the U.S. with artists such as Cat Stevens, the Kinks, and Van Morrison.

However, it is as an outstanding singer of Hebridean “mouth-music”, the unaccompanied dance music popu-lar in Gaelic-speaking communities where musical instruments were unavailable or banned, that brings Anna to the Dunedin Celtic Arts Festival.

“Elfin Anna Rugis began to sing. Her acoustic mouth music could only be described as mercurial, magical and many moons ancient. It’s as if it had slipped from the earth and taken to air to fly around the walls on wings.”

“A unique and sophisticated marriage of music and poetry. Anna Rugis is a brilliant composer as well as a fine lyricist and singer with an enchanting voice. Beautifully crafted, light hearted and at the same time, as deep as it gets.” – Women in Music (US A ).

Lucy Wise and the B’GolliesDaughter of a West Australian luthier and singer song-writer, Lucy Wise spent her childhood singing with the Wise Family Band, and from a young age has played at folk festivals around Australia and internationally. Drawing inspiration from Appalachian and Celtic folk music, Lucy’s songs sketch universally recognizable stories woven around everyday characters and places. She is joined by Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass) from New-Acoustic instrumental trio ‘The String Contingent”: and Mischa Herman (accordion) to form “The B’Gollies,” who bring influences from their backgrounds in classical, European folk, Celtic and American music. The band was a favourite at The National Folk Festival (AC T ) and Fairbridge Festival (WA ) this year. The band puts storytelling at the centre of their arrangements of songs that are all about people, and the small things that illuminate everyday life.

“A wonderfully natural singer and uncommonly gifted writer, Lucy leads an excellent band. Prediction: within this decade Lucy will be a noted songster, worldwide.” – Doug Spencer, A B C Radio National.

Barrie McDonaldBarrie started playing as a youngster in Dunedin, taking piano lessons in Baldwin Street – the steepest residen-tial street in the world. At 9 years of age the accordion was thrust into his hands and, years later in Wellington, found the burgeoning folk scene of the ’60s and learnt the banjo and mandolin. Posted to Christchurch, Barrie started playing everything from bluegrass to Scottish country dance. In the ’90s he formed the now renowned Celtic trio, Claddagh with Davy Stuart and Mike Considine.

Jacqui Seque The New Zealand Academy of Highland and National Dancing is an examination body that trains and quali-fies highland dancers, teachers and judges. The Academy fosters and maintains the Highland and National dances brought to New Zealand by the Scottish Settlers.

The New Zealand Academy of Highland and National Dancing (Inc) was first inaugurated in 1945 with the objective to raise the standard of technique and execu-tion and to establish a fuller appreciation of the art and beauty of the national dances.

The Ghillie Callum club is the local Teachers and Judges Group, and all senior members are qualified through the Academy system. Junior members are invited to attend, once they have completed the Elementary Examination. The club fosters and supports the members by provid-ing workshops, and support in developing teaching and judging skills. Many opportunities are made available to us to showcase our many dances and variations of them.

Rare Byrds Rare Byrds is a Dunedin-based early music ensemble fea-turing a range of period instruments such as recorders, viols, spinet, nyckelharpa and rauschpfeife. For the Celtic Arts Festival, Rare Byrds is delighted to present early Scottish music from the Renaissance and especially the Baroque period when Edinburgh was a major European cultural centre. Italian composers like Franceso Brasanti came to Scotland to seek their fortunes, producing fine Scottish-influenced work in the process. Native-born composers such as Alexander Munro successfully com-bined contemporary musical styles with Scottish folk tunes.
