TECHNICAL REPRESENTATION PLAN

Main DRAWINGS in the product design technical representation plan

■ 2. PRODUCT “ARCHITECTURE” DRAWING, “exploded” drawing in which the components are highlighted (and indicated with an ITEM NAME) by showing how they are assembled each other (the representation is completed with an information box so called “BILL OF MATERIAL”; obviously you don't need it in “mono-components” products);

■ 1. “GENERAL ARRANGEMENT” DRAWING, the first drawing to give a general outlook to the product, related both to the PHISICAL ENVIRONMENT and the USER;

■ 3. “ASSEMBLY” DRAWING, the most important technical drawing for “multi-component” products in which, by means of SECTION VIEWS and SCALED ASSEMBLIES DETAILS, the product construction is described (obviously you don't need it in “mono-components” products);

■ 4. “PRODUCTION” DRAWING, complete representation of each isolated component targeted to produce the part.

■ The “item”, also called “position number” and “reference number”, constitutes the elementary unit of the product architecture, so that its importance is fundamental in PDM (Product Data Management). In industrial practice –hence in the norms– it is divided in three parts:

the “part reference” is a simple and convenient code referred to a part exclusively in the project of a product (it is auxiliary); it can also include a “group” definition;

the “reference designation” is a code who can be used to better specify a “part number” (it is auxiliary);

the “part number” is the effective code who identifies a part, in an organization; it is absolutely invariable and it can be used along the whole product lifecycle, even longer when a component is the element of a “platform” (it is essential data).

AUXILIARY DOCUMENTATION in the product design technical representation plan

■ TECHNICAL DOSSIER, in which it is possible add information that is not included in the drawings like: materials data sheets, standard external components description with their supplier’s drawings etc.;

■ SAMPLES, PHISICAL or VIRTUAL MODELS: semifinished materials samples (for example mounted onto an exhibition panel), standard components, aesthetical phisical models, virtual representations, prototypes etc.;

■ FILES: mathematical models for components development (this is foundamental when a part must be produced by moulding or by automatic cutting or by automatic bending, and when the drawing representation is impossible, like in “sculptured” geometries).
