The Chaplet Today’s observance of Divine Mercy Sunday is a good time to renew our devotion to the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. There is a close link between this de-votion and the pro-life movement. Fr. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, who was a principal translator of St. Faustina's diary, and the postulator of her cause of canonization, writes the following: "On at least three occasions, from 8:00-11:00 in the evening, she felt like her insides were being torn apart. She suffered so much that she thought she was going to die. The doctors couldn't figure out what was ailing her, and no medication was able to allevi-ate her sufferings. Later, she was given to understand that she was undergoing those pains for mothers who were aborting their children (Diary, 1276). "On another occasion, she had a vision of an angel coming with thunderbolts to destroy one of the most beautiful cities of her country. And she felt power-less to do anything about it (Diary, 474). What anti-dote did the Lord give her? The Chaplet of Divine Mercy. [She explained] that the city was to be chas-tised for its sins, primarily the sin of abor-tion." ("Wombs of Mercy," Marian Helpers Bulletin, Summer 1995, p.13). In 2003, Pope John Paul II issued an Apostolic Blessing to all who pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet “for mothers, that they not abort their offspring; for infants in danger of being put to death in the womb; for a change of heart of providers of abortions and of their collaborators; for human victims of stem cell research, genetic manipulation, cloning and euthana-sia; and for all entrusted with the government of peo-ples, that they may promote the Culture of Life, so as to put an end to the culture of death."

By Dr. Scott Hahn The Day the Lord Made

Second Sunday of Easter/Divine Mercy Sunday (Cycle B) Three times in today's Psalm we cry out a victory shout: "His mercy endures forever." Truly we've known the everlasting love of God, who has come to us as our Savior. By the blood and water that flowed from Jesus' pierced side (see John 19:34), we've been made God's children, as we hear in today's Epistle. Yet we never met Jesus, never heard Him teach, never saw Him raised from the dead. His saving Word came to us in the Church - through the ministry of the apostles, who in today's Gospel are sent as He was sent. He was made a life-giving Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 15:45) and He filled His apostles with that Spirit. As we hear in today's First Reading, they bore witness to His resurrec-tion with great power. And through their witness, handed down in the Church through the centuries, their teaching and traditions have has reached us (see Acts 2:42). We encounter Him as the apostles did - in the breaking of the bread on the Lord's day (see Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Revelation 1:10). There is something liturgical about the way today's Gos-pel scenes unfold. It's as if John is trying to show us how the risen Lord comes to us in the liturgy and sacraments. In both scenes it is Sunday night. The doors are bolted tight, yet Jesus mysteriously comes. He greets them with an expression, "Peace be with you," used elsewhere by divine messengers (see Daniel 10:19; Judges 6:23). He shows them signs of His real bodily presence. And on both nights the disciples respond by joyfully receiving Jesus as their "Lord." Isn't this what happens in the Mass - where our Lord speaks to us in His Word, and gives himself to us in the sacrament of His body and blood? Let us approach the altar with joy, knowing that every Eucharist is the day the Lord has made - when the victory of Easter is again made wonderful in our eyes. 2nd Sunday of Easter

When we were learning how to swim, the instructor would show us different things to try, such as ducking our heads under water, and blowing bubbles, and even-tually jumping in the water. Before she asked us to do anything, however, she would always demonstrate and end with the admonition, “Don’t be afraid! There’s nothing to it—it’s easy!” These small reassurances en-couraged her six and seven-year old students to strike out on their own and swim.

The great mentors and instructors of faith offer the same kind of encouragement. Think of the saints. By their example, teaching and preaching, the Church is inspired to holiness, fidelity and great virtue. We see what they accomplished and try to do the same. Their message is that the way of faith may be difficult and demanding, but you have all the grace you need to do it. And, in the end, it’s worth it.

But the real challenge is not in following great example; it’s giving it! There are many people around us, young and old, who see and follow our example in small and not-so-small things. How we practice our faith, how much we participate, how we treat others, our language, our respect for holy things and places give witness to our faith and challenge others to do the same. Be sure you set a good example and practice what you preach. You never know who may be watching. ~James Gaffney, © 2009 Karides Lic. to St. George Publishing

THE GIFT OF GOD’S MERCY: Divine Mercy Sunday and a Holy Year of Mercy On the cover of today’s bulletin is the image of Divine Mercy. The church has come to celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy on the Second Sunday of Easter. Here is a brief reflection on this feast and an announcement of a Holy Year of Mercy which was proclaimed by Pope Francis. The Feast of Divine Mercy. Devotion to Divine Mercy has its more recent origins in the thought and mis-sion of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun whose writings influenced Pope John Paul II to the point where on May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday. Pope St. John Paul II wrote of the reasons for this devotion: This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy—the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Pe-ter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church. ~ Bl. Pope John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005) The Image of Divine Mercy. St. Faustina recalls a vision of Jesus appearing to her with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in You” be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the world: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish” (Diary, no. 48) and “By means of this image I will grant many graces to souls” (Diary, no. 742). A Holy Year of Mercy. Recently Pope Francis announced that he was declaring a special year of grace. "I frequently have thought about how the church can make more evident its mission to be a witness of mercy," he said during his homily, when he decided to call a Holy Year, which will be celebrated from Dec. 8, 2015, until Nov. 20, 2016. The biblical theme of the year, he said, will be "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful," an admonition that applies "especially to confessors," the pope said with a smile. Traditionally, every 25 years the popes proclaim a holy year, which features special celebrations and pil-grimages, strong calls for conversion and repentance, and the offer of special opportunities to experience God's grace through the sacraments, especially confession. Extraordinary holy years, like the Holy Year of Mercy, are less frequent, but offer the same opportunities for spiritual growth. We will be making preparation to observe this Holy Year but in the meantime this seems an appropriate time to begin reflection and prayer. The doors of the church "are wide open so that all those who are touched by grace can find the certainty of forgiveness," Pope Francis said at a penance service, which fea-tured individual confessions. It was part of a worldwide celebration of "24 Hours for the Lord," in which Catholic churches were staying open for prayer, eucharistic adoration and confession. During the coming months our parishes will be exploring ways for us to participate in this Holy Year. This weekend I encourage you to join others in the chapel at Saint John the Baptist Church for prayers and re-flections on the theme of Divine Mercy. The service will begin at 2:30 PM. Please come and pray together for the gift of divine mercy to bring healing to our personal lives and to our world of violent conflict. God bless. Fr. John

("Wombs of Mercy," Marian Helpers Bulle-tin, Summer 1995, p.13).

Meet Fr. Joe− Answering the call with compassionFor Gary and Susan Pickering, Fr. Joe Mazzone is more than a pastor—he is family.

Like so many priests in our Archdiocese, Fr. Joe has been a source of strength and support, helping others find Christ’s presence in times of joy and sorrow. When Gary and Susan’s daughter Marcy passed away unexpectedly during surgery, Fr. Joe was the first person they called. Marcy had been a close friend of Fr. Joe’s, and her faith life had blossomed with his help through challenging times in her life. Fr. Joe was there for the Pickerings as they said goodbye to their beloved Marcy then, and he remains by their side today. Together, they continue to grow in faith and friendship, confident that they will be reunited with Marcy again, and grateful for the hope they receive through each other in Christ Jesus.

Our priests are there for us and our families without question or hesitation. Please consider showing your gratitude by supporting your parish collection this Easter.

Thank you for helping to ensure a continuum of care and quality of life for all our active and senior priests.
