Major Government Project in Bahrain (One Year—April 2006-April 2007)
Name of the Project: National Employment Project of Government of Bahrain
A Brief Report
I was selected by the Government of Bahrain to work in its prestigious and ambitious “National
Employment Project/ University Project”. My parent university, Bharathidasan University,
permitted me to go over to Bahrain on lien to undertake the project. The project itself was
launched by the Bahraini Government in April 2006 with the purpose of bringing the educated
but unemployable citizens of Bahrain to Bahrain Training Institute (The biggest vocational training
centre of the Government) and to train them by providing all the needed skills and thereby
enabling them to become employable. Mere formal education has not provided them all the skills
required by prospective employers. Therefore, a team of teachers from various countries,
belonging to various disciplines, were entrusted with the task of imparting necessary skills in
areas like communication, computer and information technology, engineering, commerce,
marketing, management, accountancy, interview techniques, self-development and so on.
We nearly trained 12000 Bahrainis in simultaneous batches in period of one year. The duration of
the training courses was three to six months depending upon the level of trainees. The course
modules were to be decided accordingly by us based on texts published by Cambridge University
only. At the end of the training, placement camps were arranged and most of the trainees got
suitable placements both in Government and private sectors.
32
I had the wonderful opportunity of working with teachers from Cambridge and Oxford universities.
I taught communication skills to the trainees. I also offered two courses in English Language in
the University of Bahrain during two semesters.
I also conducted corporate training programmes; and trained Bahraini Teachers to appear in
IELTS.
At the end of the year I was honoured with a “Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of my continuous effort and valuable contribution in the achievement of over-all success” of the
Project.
Current Major Research Project (2010-12)
Title: Technology-Enabled, Learner-Centred Approaches in Reforming Communicative English Language Teaching / Learning At Tertiary Level with Particular Reference to Rural Students in the University Area
Aim of the Project:To study in detail the problems faced by the students at the tertiary level in using English
language for effective communication with particular reference to rural students in and around
the university (area) where the researcher is employed. Globalization and the demands of Multi
National companies require a change in the attitudes and approaches in Interpersonal
communication and in the use of discourse modes.
This project proposes:
To investigate the practical problems/hurdles encountered both by teachers and
learners in improving their competence in communication;
To introduce technology/computer-based and Learner-Centred new teaching/learning,
skills-oriented programmes, methods, techniques and approaches to enable fast and
effective inculcation of communicative language (CL) skills in an interactive classroom
environment free from stresses and strains.
To prepare sample workbooks/practice exercises and teaching/learning lesson
modules on the basis of updated technology-based, skills-oriented programmes;
33
printed and electronic materials in the form of CDs and Books for enabling effective
and fast learning of oral and written skills will be prepared and introduced to the
tertiary level learners at the end of the project;
To prepare e-content courses using alternative methods and techniques.
To enhance employability of young graduates at the end of tertiary level through not
merely a knowledge-based syllabus but through syllabi, but will include adequate
communicative language skills and values.
