Did you know that 50 years ago some of your friends would not be in the same school with you because they had a different color skin? They would not be allowed to eat in restaurants with you, or sit anywhere they wanted to sit on a bus. It was against the law.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. knew that everyone should be treated fairly. He made many famous speeches to try to change the laws. He told people they should not fight to solve problems. He said they should use peace.

In his most famous speech Dr. King said, “I have a dream, that one day, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and little white girls as sisters and brothers.”

What do you think he meant?

This is John F. Kennedy. He was the 35th president. He was the youngest president.

Many people liked him as a leader. He thought it was important to help others. He worked hard for his country. He told people that they should work hard for their country, too. When he became president he made a famous speech. He said, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

This is a picture of Neil Armstrong. He was the first person to walk on the moon! He was very brave.

Neil Armstrong knew many people worked very hard to help him get to the moon. They were very happy to watch him take his first step. He said it was… “One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.”

Most people have only one job but Benjamin Franklin was a busy man. He was a writer, a printer, an inventor and a scientist!

He was also a statesman. That means he helped make the rules for our country. He signed some important papers called The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution. They were the first rules of the United States.

People thought Benjamin Franklin was very smart. They liked how hard he worked for his country.

He said many important things. Some people remember this famous quote…”Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”
