A WORD FROM THE CHIEF Hello, Olympians of the 2018 Scout-lympics,

To start, I would like to thank everyone for letting this crazy vision become a reality. When we got this idea for an Olympic style camporee, it was just a hand full of suggestions that in the end would come together to make the best camporee ever. This camporee is for all you striving Olympians out there. The patrol games and troop games will be a perfect combination of the Olympic events with a scouting twist on them. Your troop will have the ability to choose acountry you want to represent for the weekend, so the earlier you sign up, the better chance you have in getting your first choice. Please list your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice on the registration form. The camporee staff will be representing the USA, so don’t list that as one of your choices. Each Troop/Pack will choose an activity from the enclosed list and send adults to run the event. Please list your 1st and 2nd choice on the registration form. One thing that we implemented this year that has not been in a camporee in this district for a long time is that we are inviting all cub scouts to come and enjoy the event with the boy scouts. I can’t wait to serve as your youth chief.

The patrol/den events start Saturday morning after the parade of countries and opening ceremony, then everyone will go back to the Olympic Village for lunch. After lunch, troop/pack events will start including the "Ingredients Around the World" cooking competition where troops/packs will cook food from their country and then serve it to a panel of judges. After troop/pack games and dinner we'll have an amazing campfire put on by our very own first vice chief, Anthony Guadagino. We plan on having a closely-themed, exciting campfire to entertain you all before the closing ceremony on Sunday. Yours in Scouting, Andrew Fogle Youth Camporee Chief

CAMPOREE RULES AND INFORMATION 1 Have fun!!! Live by the Scout Oath, Scout Law and Outdoor Code.2 You may not participate in Boy Scout games or competitions if your eighteenth birthday is on or before

Friday, April 20th. 3 Follow the Campmaster and camp rules. This means no alcohol, firearms, fireworks, etc. 4 Please pre-register with an approximate count of campers and your payment. See dates below.

You may add additional campers as needed after initial registration. 5 The uniform for this Camporee’s games and unit competitions is a Class B activity shirt, shorts or pants,

and Scout type cap (if head covering is worn). Class A uniform will be worn for Scout’s Own.6 Please attend cracker-barrel Friday and Saturday evening. Many announcements are made there, and you

might miss important program information if you are absent. We request that each troop/pack attending bring snacks for cracker-barrel on Saturday night.

7 Everyone is to remain in their campsites after midnight, except for emergencies. This means no camp wide manhunt or capture the flag. You are not to leave your specific campsite, unless you are using your bathroom/latrine. Any behavior that does not follow the Scout Law (i.e. damaging other’s property, stealing, etc.) will result in the Scout being sent home.

8 Judging: Judges who have been instructed, as to the rules set by the Camporee staff will do all judging. 9 Times, as posted in the Camporee book, will be adhered to as best as possible. Any changes will be posted

at Registration/Main Pavilion. It is the unit’s responsibility to check there for any changes.10 Upon check-in Camp Elmore vehicle policy will be followed. Once unloaded all vehicles must return to

the main parking lot. The Campmaster & ranger is the only person that can amend this policy. The Camporee staff has no say in this policy. Check-out Sunday morning will not begin until after Scout’s Own. Break down, clean and police your site. Each Unit will receive a public area to police. When done send a runner to Registration/Main Pavilion and a Campmaster or staff memeber will inspect your area. Please do not hinder or delay your departure due to your inability to adhere to the rules.

11 The Camporee staff reserves the right to change any of the information found in the Camporee booklet. 12 Leadership skills require us to be able to improvise. We apologize in advance if this occurs. Camporee

Chief’s decisions are final and binding. Your participation in any events secures your agreement to all the rules as stated.

13 All units are asked to provide two adults to donate one pint of blood each. This participation will provide you with points toward the spirit award.

14 All units are also asked to provide one water cooler for use by Camporee participants. Your unit number must be clearly marked on the cooler. The coolers will be used to provide drinks during the day. Please deliver and pick up coolers at Registration/Main Pavilion.

15 Each Scout and Scouter is asked to carry his or her own cups for the weekend. Your Camporee staff cannot provide cups for drinks. Expect hot weather and be prepared to keep your Scouts hydrated.

16 Please have your teams ready and at the unit events when the event starts. Previously this has caused delays in keeping on time, and unfortunately also disqualifications. Each patrol will be given an event card to have initialed at each event. The patrol leader will be in charge of this card and will turn them in to dean of judges at the Main Pavilion on Saturday afternoon after the conclusion of patrol games and before the start of the Troop Games which begins after lunch. All Event Cards must be in on time otherwise they will not be accepted.

17 Be Prepared for Gateway and Campsite competition. Patrol flags should remain at camp during campsite inspection. Patrol Flags must be turned in with your patrol cards and then picked up after Troop games before returning to your campsites for dinner

18 We Challenge YOU to bring your BEST Song/Skit to camporee. Auditions for skits will be accepted at the main pavilion during patrol games. Be ready! The top three will be chosen to perform at Saturday night’s campfire.

19 Webelos crossover and OA Tap-out will be performed at Campfire.

PATROL / DEN EVENTS

The patrol / den events will be split into two parts. Half of the patrols and dens will participate in the pentathlon relay while the other half will participate in other events. After the first pentathlon heat is complete, the second half of the camp will compete in their pentathlon while the first group complete the additional events. Here is a description of these events.

Pentathlon Relay Race

At your assigned time slot, each patrol or den will have an athlete report to one of the following stations for their safety briefing. The remaining patrol / den members may line the race course to cheer on their team.

1) Main pavilion – One scout will run from the main pavilion along a marked path to the Archery range.

2) Archery range – After being tagged by their team mate, the 2nd scout will proceed to put 3 arrows in the target. You will have a fixed number of arrows to accomplish this task. If unable to put 3 arrows in the target there will be a time penalty assessed. Once complete this scout will take the baton from their team mate and race to the next station.

3) Air Rifle Range – After being tagged by their team mate, the 3rd scout will proceed to shoot at the target and make 2 hits. You will have a fixed number of BB’s to accomplish this task, loading one at a time. If unable to accomplish this task a time penalty will be assessed. Once complete this scout will take the baton from their team mate and race to the next station.

4) Canoe – After receiving the baton from their team mate, the 4th scout will proceed to the water and enter the canoe. The 5th scout will already be waiting with the canoe for their team mate. Both scouts will paddle around the dock back to shore. Once on shore the 5th scout will exit the canoe and pass the baton to the 6th and final scout. (Cub Scout Note: for this event, an adult leader will have to take the place of cub scout number 5. Preferably one who has taken Safety Afloat training at My.scouting.org

5) Aquatic Pavilion – The 6th scout will take the baton and then run back to the main pavilion.

The Twist? – When the first scout recieves the baton, there will be a written sentence that the scout must memorize. They may take as long as they need to read it but cannot start running until the paper has been placed inside the baton and cap replaced. Each time the baton is passed, one scout must tell the sentence to the next scout. Again they may take as long as neccesary to talk but the scout passing the baton cannot leave the station and the baton cannot be opened. The final scout will write down the sentence and hand the baton and written sentence to the judges to secure your position in the race. Points will be given based on your place in the race and how correctly your write your sentence.

Page 9: Scouts on Safari V5 · Web viewnd Youth Camporee Vice-Chief John Callanan 2 nd Adult Camporee Vice- Chief Brian Callanan Registration Michelle Chiever LHD D istrict Camping Chair LHD

While not participating in the relay, the remaining patrols/dens will compete in the following events. You must have your patrol cards signed off at each event and confirm you score has been recorded by the judge.

Beach Ball Shot Put Each patrol / den member will attempt to throw the shot put (beach ball) as far as possible. Only the top 3 distances for each patrol will count. These will be added together for your event score.

Pool Noodle Javelin Each patrol / den member will attempt to throw the Javelin (pool noodle) as far as possible. Only the top 3 distances for each patrol will count. These will be added together for your event score.

Lost luggage? You have arrived at the host country of the Olympics. Unfortunately, the airline has lost your luggage. You can only claim it if you can identify all the items in your suitcase. One at a time each member of your team will run to the suitcase and peek at its contents. You will return to your patrol to start writing down the items. Please pick the patrol member with the best handwriting to be the scribe. While the scribe is writing another scout can be running down to the suitcase, but only one scout running at a time. When all the blanks are full, turn your form into the luggage claims department (judge) to end your time. Points will be awarded for time and accuracy. Remember, if the judge can’t read it, it will not count. Be specific, Red t-shirt, black jeans, plastic monkey. This is a timed event with penalties for incorrect items.

I Need Water!!Your fellow Olympians have just finished an event and need a drink. Your patrol must carry a bucket of water suspended from 4 ropes through a series of obstacles. You cannot touch the bucket. You may pass your rope to another team member to get over, under, or around an obstacle but 4 people must be holding the ropes at all times. Don’t spill any water or your team mates may pass out from dehydration. This is a timed event with penalties for water spilt during the event.
