General Information: Camporee is open to all registered members of the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts and American Heritage Girls of any faith. All of the youth protection policies of those organizations are in effect. Since this is a Boy Scout Camp, there must be two deep leadership for all units, and youth younger than the age of 10 must have a parent or guardian in attendance at all times. There will be several different activities going on at camp on this weekend – please do not disturb the other programs that are going on during the Camporee. Special Note: This year, Dinner will be served at the camporee. Sketti & Meatballs, with some Gaaaalic Bread with various drinks. This will be with our special Guest, the Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh, Luis R. Zarama Registration Fees: Registration fees for the event are $16 per person. $10 for the day (climbing wall and dinner will not be available for day only participants) maximum of $60 for a family of four or more. Uniforming: Uniforms will be required for opening flag ceremony, mass, Dinner, campfire, and closing flag ceremony. During the events, a

t-shirt, pants/shorts is recommended. Closed toe shoes are required at all times unless using the shower houses. Unit Participation: We encourage your unit to take ownership of any of the activities below. From younger to older activities – there is plenty to do from hosting one of the events, to helping with one of the events. Contact the Camporee Chief if you have interest! Shower Houses: There are shower houses and restrooms in every campsite. If you use the shower houses and rest rooms in camp, please make sure that you leave them better than you found them. All campsite areas will be open, as well as port-a-john and facilities all over camp. Patches & Checkout: Checkout includes inspection of campsite for trash and facilities, as well as trails in and out of the campsites. Units will receive their patches Sunday morning after the successful completion of the unit’s campsite inspection. Any extra patches will be made available through the Catholic Committee on Scouting. Parking: There may be several units in each campsite. If you have a trailer, please drop the trailer close to the campsite, and park your vehicle along the road (see map). If you will be going in and out of camp regularly, we ask that you park at the upper parking lot. Once the vehicles are parked, they must not move until departure. Tenting & Equipment: Units attending must furnish their own tents and equipment. Water: Water is available at camp at the shower houses and all around the camp. Please only drink and fill your water containers out of the BLUE handled spigots. Please encourage all youth to carry a water bottle. Meals: Units should bring breakfast and snacks for Saturday & Sunday. Lunch and Dinner is part of the registration. SM/SPL & Advisors are to attend the Saturday night Cracker Barrel which is provided by the CCoS and Saturday Lunch will be provided by the Knights of Columbus.

Health/Safety/First Aid: Minor First Aid is the Unit’s responsibility. Major First Aid problems may be triaged by Camporee First Aid Staff (Venturing Crew 711) and transported if serious enough by unit leaders to the nearest hospital. Flammable Liquids: All liquid fuels must be handled in accordance with the National Boy Scout policy, including adult supervision. Buglers: Any Scouts who can play taps, revile, call to colors, etc on their bugles are encouraged to bring them! NOTE: All Camporee Activities are subject to change as necessary due to inclement weather. Please plan accordingly.

Hazardous Weather Policy:

The Camporee Chiefs are watching the weather at all times. If there is severe weather coming, you will be notified immediately. In case of severe weather, do not travel to the Dining Hall or any of the other buildings where you are exposed. Mobilize your troop and those around you into the shower or bathroom areas in your campgrounds or buildings nearest you and lock the door. Ensure that everyone is closest to the back of the room as you can and stay as far away from the windows as possible. When the danger has passed, the camporee chiefs will drive around camp and blow the horn three times.

Activities: The group that covers the most activities (Retreat activities, Rosary, etc.) plus the below will get special recognition at the Saturday Night Campfire. Individuals will be recognized during the campfire. Survival Bracelets: Survival Bracelets will be available to be made at the Handicraft hut.

Fire Building Station: Scouts will use given materials to build a fire. The patrols will not need to bring any materials themselves. The scouts will need to start the fire using a 9-volt battery and steel wool. They will have to burn through twine set knee height above the base of the fire. Scouts will then need to find sticks and given 2 matches to build a fore and burn twine set knee height above ground. Everybody Up: This initiative exercise is a useful way to introduce the idea of group cooperation. Ask two Scouts of about the same size to sit on the ground or floor facing each other with the soles of their feet touching, their knees bent, and their hands tightly grasping each other’s. From this position they try to pull themselves into a standing position. If they succeed, ask another Scout to join them and try standing with three Scouts, then four, etc. Balloon Battle Royal: Equipment: Balloon and 18-inch piece of string for each player Procedure: The players blow up their balloons (all the same size) and help each other tie them to the back of their belts. On signal, the players use only their hands to try to break the balloons of other players while protecting their own. All’s fair except using any kind of instrument, punching, tackling, or other forms of fighting. When a player’s balloon is broken, he drops out. Bucket Brigade: Equipment: Two plastic milk jugs for each patrol, one empty and one filled with water; one empty paper cup for each Scout Procedure: The patrols line up in single file. A full jug is in front of the patrol leader and an empty one is at the end of the line. Mark the empty jug 1∕4 inch below the waterline of the full jug. On signal, the patrol leader fills his cup with water from the jug. He pours the water into the cup of the next Scout in line, who pours it into the next Scout’s cup, and so on to the last Scout, who pours the water into the jug at the end of the line. This process is repeated until one patrol has emptied the front jug and filled the other jug. Human Mario Carts: Each Scout will be a “Kart” and will take the crab position (body up and walking on feet and hands.) Each Scout will have two balloons of the same color attached to them. To pop your

opponent’s balloons, they can bump into the other’s team karts or use the toothpicks provided. Once both balloons are popped, you’re out! You must also complete “The Circuit” of the oval and cross the finish line. Rock Wall: Scouts are taught how to climb a rock wall and can belay each other and free climb. Cooking Competition: Patrols have 1 hour to create a meal with the ingredients provided and will be tested by competition leader and helpers. First Aid Race: Scouts will be taught first aid then take a walk along a trail and need to help helpers who are pretending to be injured. Pancake Race: Scouts will have a grill and batter, they need to make a pancake and then run it on a spatula down and around a cone and the patrol who runs out of batter first wins. T-Shirt Tie Dye: Scouts will be taught how to tie dye a shirt then tie dye their own shirts and socialize with friends. Shelter Building: Scouts will be taught how to build a lean-to then will build their own and then build a small hut.

Pizza Cookoff Contest Rules PRESENTATION The food should include appropriate garnish, serving containers, color contrasts, harmony and edible decorations. Light and dark color contrast is often very pleasing. The pots should be very clean and well-seasoned inside and outside. Contestants will be rewarded for a pleasant emphasis on the desirability of the food. Contestants will be penalized for gaudy garnishes that hide the food, or are not edible. Extra decor will not result in additional points or a higher placement. EXTERIOR INSPECTION

Contestants will be rewarded for even cooking those results in a uniform color and surface texture such as the golden brown rolls with crisp crust and the evenly browned meat. Contestants will be penalized for spotty cooking, burned spots, raw, tough, soggy, brittle, or crumbling results. INTERNAL INSPECTION Contestants will be rewarded for pleasant aroma, uniform color, evenness of cooking, consistent texture, and completeness of the cooking process. Contestants will be penalized for spotty cooking, burned or raw spots, streaks or lumps. TASTE The ideal dish is food that that tastes delicious. Contestants will be rewarded for pleasant use of spices, natural food flavor, evenness of cooking, chew ability and aroma. Contestants will be penalized for toughness, off flavors, rancid oil flavor from improperly seasoned cast iron, burned food, foreign objects, ash, flatness, unwanted lumps, spotty cooking, cold spots, raw spots, missing ingredients, unnatural food colors, and soggy crusts. CLEANLINESS Utensils, ovens, ingredients, prep areas, and personal cleanliness will be watched. Contestants will be rewarded for the use of wash areas, table coverings, washing of hands, and covering food items from contamination. Contestants will be penalized for the lack of cleanliness in preparation and cooking areas, ovens, ingredients, and hand washing. TECHNIQUE Contestants will be judged on the showing of the proper use of ovens, heat source, tools, and utensils. Contestants will be rewarded for proper use of tools, heat source, and ovens. Team members should know how to start charcoal briquettes. They should also be able to show proper fire use. Lack of these skills will be penalized. Dutch oven techniques showing proper use of ovens, heat source, tools, and utensils should be judged. Reward proper use of tools, heat source,

2018 Bishop England Trek

Sunday, June 10, 2018 to Saturday, June 16, 2018

General Information The Bishop England Trek is a high adventure Catholic leadership program for Catholic Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members situated on the Foot Hills Trail in the Upstate of South Carolina. The program brings Catholic youth from the Province of Atlanta together with selected priests, religious and seminarians for 5 days of backpacking in the context of a vocation retreat.

Dates and Itinerary The 2018 Bishop England Trek begins on Sunday, June 10, 2018 in Spartanburg, South Carolina,

where the participants meet, get to know one another, train, have fun and pray. On Monday,

they begin their hike from Upper Whitewater Falls, NC, working their way along the Foot Hills

Trail over 5 days to Oconee State Park. While hiking and camping, they will experience a

program that is designed to encourage the integration of morality, values, spirituality, faith,

scripture and vocation in their lives as young Catholic Men and Women.

At the conclusion of the trek on Saturday, June, 16, 2018, they will be asked to continue their

discernment and if they so desire make an application to attend the St. George Trek at Philmont

Scout Ranch in 2019. Participants will also be asked to utilize the leadership skills gained and

to become role models for their fellow scouts.

Candidate Qualification / Selection Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members, ages 14 and above, as of July 1, 2018, having

completed the Ad Altari Dei and/or Pope Pius XII Religious Emblem by June 30, 2018 are eligible

to complete an application for the Bishop England Trek. Because the program can only

accommodate 40 youth, selection will be made based on demonstrated maturity, physical

ability, leadership potential, and interest in the life of the Church.

All participants must have the physical health and stamina to backpack on the rigorous

mountain trails, covering 5 miles per day. No exceptions can be made to these expectations

and requirements. An all female crew is planned pending sufficient female registration.

Participants will be notified of their selection on or before April 1, 2018.

Trek Preparation / Adult Leadership and Logistics Support / Fees Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members selected to participate in the Bishop England Trek will be assigned to a Trek Crew comprised of a priest, seminarian and 1 additional adult leader with up to 9 youth. Adult Leaders will be assigned based on regional locale in relation to the Trek Crew. Final Trek Crews and logistics support assignments will be made by April 30, 2018. The fee for the Bishop England Trek is $200.00.

The National Catholic Committee on Scouting®, acting through the local diocese or eparchy, may award the St. George emblem to members of the laity and clergy, Scouters and non-Scouters alike, who have made significant and outstanding contributions to the spiritual development of Catholic youths through Scouting.

The recipients of the emblem are to be sought after and selected by an active committee of the (arch)diocese/eparchy. This committee is to be newly- appointed each year by the diocesan Scout chaplain or chairperson. Nomination forms should give a detailed description of how the nominee provides outstanding contribution to the

spiritual development of Catholic youths through Scouting in the Catholic Church. It is improper to nominate oneself or one’s immediate family members. General Scouting achievements do not qualify a person to receive the St. George emblem. The Boy Scouts of America has district, council, regional and national awards for such recognition.

GUIDE FOR NOMINATION AND SELECTION

The following are guidelines for nomination and selection of St. George emblem recipients. These suggestions are offered as a guide only; they are indicative of some of the kinds of things that the nominator and selection committee should be looking for. Accomplishment and sustained dedication are more significant than a specific number of years in Scouting.

♦ Promoting the religious emblems programs for Catholic youths or serving as a counselor, moderator or coordinator. Encouraging non-Catholic youths to participate in the religious emblems programs of their own faiths.

♦ Giving notable service in promoting Catholic activities and service projects for the church and being willing to serve on committees for those purposes.

♦ Actively participating in and promoting Scout retreats and days of recollection.

♦ Giving notable service in organizing and maintaining Catholic-chartered Scouting units including multiple units where needed.

♦ Giving notable service in bringing the Catholic program to those youths not in Catholic-chartered Scouting units.

♦ Using fully one’s general Scouter training as well as “Scouter Development” to provide an outstanding Catholic Scouting program for youths.

Each (arch)diocese/eparchy can award one emblem annually plus one additional emblem for every 20 Catholic-chartered units or fractions thereof within the diocese. The total number of units is based on the records at the national office on Dec. 31 of the year preceding the nomination. An (arch)diocese/eparchy is not required to present the full quota of emblems each year, but cannot carry over to a following year. Selectivity is important. No posthumous or honorary recognitions are to be made. Diocesan Chairman or Chaplain will send one order form for all honorees. Do not send this form to the National office.

♦ Arranging opportunities for Mass and other Catholic worship services at camporees and summer camps. These must be consistent with the documents of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Providing also for the spiritual needs of non-Catholic Scouts.

♦ Encouraging appropriate ecumenism and Catholic leadership within the various Catholic-chartered Scouting units.

♦ Using the Catholic press and other communications media to create a better understanding of the aims and ideals of Scouting as an apostolate to youths.

♦ Educating clergy and laity about Scouting as a youth apostolate in the Catholic Church.

♦ Giving leadership in promoting Scouting for all youths regardless of race or creed. Helping organize Scouting units for minority and disadvantaged youths.
