My dog Scout is a little bit quirky. Well, okay, maybe more than a little bit. One of her idiosyncra-

sies is that she won’t “go” in the yard. I sup-pose she would if she really had to. But she much prefers to do her business elsewhere.

I humor her in this regard. We walk on the beach a lot, as any of my Instagram followers will confirm. But we also take a lot of walks around our neighborhood. We live downtown, so depending on the direction we amble, we can cruise State Street, hit Alice Keck Park gardens, or just travel in circles on the streets near our house. Maybe she’s spoiled, but there are worse hobbies for both of us than walking around the neighborhood.

That’s how I discovered Euclid Avenue, a quiet, hidden one-block street between Victoria and Sola, tucked behind the Westside Community Center, off Cas-

tillo, next to the freeway. And that’s how I discovered 415 West Sola Street, which is actually on the corner of Sola and Euclid. It has a white picket fence surrounding its large lot, with the front door on Sola Street but the side gate and garage on quiet little Euclid.

Walk through the gate up to the front door, and you’ll find plenty of surprises. The house was built in 1918. It’s a Califor-nia cottage with the wide front porch of many craftsman bungalows and plenty of details reminiscent of that era such as built-in bookshelves, charming fireplaces, gleaming hardwood floors, and original ice-box-style shelving in the kitchen. It also offers many bonuses that have been added over the years: a large enclosed porch on the back of the house, a stairway up to a huge finished attic, and a big base-ment that adds two extra rooms that can be used as workshops, studios, or what-ever your imagination allows.

The current owners of this home have lived in the house for 50 years, so there are also many subtle touches that were lovingly added by their family: stained glass windows, a unique embellished fire-place screen, vintage wallpaper, and more.

There’s even a secret panel in the study that hides a mysterious cubby space behind one wall, and a covered pass-through win-dow between the dining room and the kitchen.

The property is almost a quarter acre, and is zoned R-4, so the new owner may be able to add another unit or expand the house even more. But whether one sees this four-bedroom, two-bath home as a quirky fixer-upper or a treasure from

a bygone era just waiting to be restored to its former glory, I hope that someone who appreciates this home’s storied past and current charm, as well as its future potential, will decide to buy it and cherish it. Scout and I will be walking by regularly to watch and see.

history 101California’s four-year drought is affording an unprecedented

opportunity for innova-tions and new technologies to quench our statewide thirst. Water rates have been climbing to the tune of about 8 percent per year about 8 percent per year about 8 percent per year—and 125 percent over the past 15 years! — which is stimu-lating fresh thinking about water usage.

One such innovation — now in the beta testing phase at an island resort where freshwater has to be shipped in — is a washing-machine filter that seeks to recycle 95 percent of laundry wastewater. Although washing machines are more efficient than ever, they still use 20 gal-lons of water to remove what is usually a small amount of dirt. In addition to water usage, there is the problem of detergent and its negative environmental impact. The AquaFresco filter uses a closed-loop system that removes the small amount of dirt from the water and then returns the water to the machine to wash again. Amazingly, this filter recycles most of the detergent for reuse, as well. Only a little

water needs to be added to replenish the small percent-age that’s not recycled.

AquaFresco uses an absorption-filtration sys-tem, unlike many water filters that use fine mesh to separate waste by size. These units are self-con-tained, meaning that the washing machine outlet can

be connected directly to the inlet of the AquaFresco filter so that wastewater goes through the filter, exits it, and is chan-neled back to the washer for closed-loop cleaning. Since this filter can be adapted to almost any washer to almost any washer to almost any washer— commercial or residential residential residential— it will obviate the need to invest in new machines, which is another big resource plus. If it works as the inven-tors, who are MIT doctoral candidates, anticipate, it could use the same batch of water to wash laundry for up to six months.

The simplicity of this device is part of its appeal. (Simplicity is a key sustain-ability principle.) In looking forward, many scientists indicate that our current drought will likely be the rule and not

the exception, not only in California but, alas, for much of the rest of the country and the world. It is important that we all keep attuned to the many creative systems, products, and approaches in the innovation pipeline that will help us live

more lightly on our distressed planet. The AquaFresco filter is just one such system. Technology and invention can help, but we should not be duped into thinking that they are the sole answer to our planetary woes.

This one-story Carpen-ter Gothic Revival–style cottage of shiplap con-struction with an asym-

metrical design is one of only two residences in the Santa Bar-bara area using this architectural style. Located a few steps from City Hall and De la Guerra Plaza, this property has undergone few changes in its 129-year history.

The Carpenter Victorian Gothic style in the United States was popularized from 1860 to 1890 by the unbound use of artis-tic details in which the builder and craftsman were given freedom to challenge the status quo by experimenting with various design motifs. To do so, they used foot-powered and hand-cranked jigsaws, which became available in the United States during the construction boom of the 1800s, powered by the abundance of North American timber. The new tools sparked an architectural renaissance of sorts that combined the simplicity of farmhouse-style architecture with decorative scroll trim work.

These “new” architectural elements included pointed arches, pitched roofs, steep gables, wall dormers, tracery, and mass-produced wood moldings. For many Americans, what had previously been viewed as traditional farmhouse style was now updated with more freedom and imagination in which the barriers to entry had now become accessible and affordable for the everyday artisan-craftsman.

The property’s more established architectural motif is found in the decorative scrollwork in and around the triangular pediment above the front porch. Additional areas of ornamentation include the Gothic trim along the bargeboard of the gabled roofline, which provides additional harmony in maintaining the home’s Victorian flavor.

Between 1915 and 1978, the property changed hands at least nine times. It’s been on and off the market a few times since 2013, most recently listed for sale in March 2015 for $1.3 million.
