history
Like many moviegoers, I’ll never forget my first visit to the Arling-ton Theatre: that majestic Spanish Lton Theatre: that majestic Spanish LColonial Revival profile, expansive
courtyard, and glorious interior décor—rows of adobe houses along the theater’s perimeter with a night sky of constel-lations blanketing the ceiling, all like a scene straight out of an old Zorro motion picture. Even as a lifelong Angeleno who had frequented every movie palace in Hollywood, Santa Barbara’s largest the-ater impressed the hell out of me.
My first visit was July 1998 (long before my recent move to this area) on one of my myriad Santa Barbara weekend getaways. As we sat there waiting for the movie to begin, the crowd’s chatter stilled as the stage opened up before us, and out rose the pipe organ with an old organist play-ing like some whirling dervish to the animated summer audience’s emphatic delight. As this mad musician—still play-ing—slowly receded back down into the stage, I was practically transported back in time to turn-of-the-century California.
With all this magnificent fanfare pre-ceding the opening credits, I’m embar-rassed to tell you what movie I had come to town to see there: Godzilla, starring Matthew Broderick. Yes, while the warm memories of my inaugural visit will never fade, I can barely recall a single scene from Roland Emmerich’s failed reboot.
Unlike myself, city historian Mary Louise Days comes from several gen-erations of Santa Barbarans. Days, who worked for the city’s Planning Depart-ment for 36 years until 1996, was born, raised, and educated here, even attending UC Santa Barbara. Ergo, the Arlington is part of her DNA.
“For many of us natives, it’s always been a part of our lives,” Days said.
The movie palace’s heritage is impres-sive, on a par with its spiritual siblings in Hollywood. As Santa Barbara Historical Museum Director of Research Michael Redmon explained, the perennial fixture on State Street’s 1300 block gleaned its name from two hotels previously occupy-ing that spot: Santa Barbara’s first luxury hotel, The Arlington, which opened in 1875 before burning in a fire in 1909, and the New Arlington Hotel of 1911. The lat-ter incarnation incurred so much damage in Santa Barbara’s great 1925 earthquake that it had to be demolished. Days speculated, “The second hotel had not been demolished immediately after the earthquake. I doubt that there was any interim use.” As the story was told to her, “My father [then 19] went downtown to
get into a worker’s line of men trying to remove the brick rubble.”
Movie studios once controlled distri-bution, and so Twentieth Century Fox’s Fox West Coast Theatres Corporation intended to build a theater in town, in direct competition with the Granada Theatre, which was then owned by War-ner Bros.
As legend has it, architect Joseph Plun-kett of the Santa Barbara–based firm Edwards and Plunkett impressed West Coast Theatres executives with a few loose designs he had improvised on his Los Angeles trip. Fox executives immediately commissioned Edwards and Plunkett to design this new the-ater, which began construction in 1930.
Ornate, exotic-themed palaces were all the rage: Hollywood had Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Egyptian, and the Oriental; Oak-land had the Paramount; and Fox established the Village, which still lords over Westwood and its UCLA constituents today. Plunkett pushed forward with what had become the architectural agenda of Santa Bar-bara’s civic leaders: a Spanish Colonial Revivalism, combining Spanish and Moorish motifs. Plunkett relied on the fountain in Seville to inform his design of the one in the Arlington’s esplanade and employed Tunisian tiles for the staircases, while hand-wrought-iron chandeliers and lamps took their cues from medieval Catalonian designs.
Artist Samuel Armstrong executed the mural over the entrance, while John Gamble oversaw the theater’s spectacular
Spanish village interior design (replete with painted streetlight shadows) and the Andalusian landscape across the fire curtain.
On May 22, 1931, the world premiere of Fox’s Daddy Long Legs launched the Fox Arlington, attracting Daddy stars Janet Gaynor and Warner Baxter plus Myrna Loy, Joan Bennett, and Wallace Beery.
“I grew up with it being the Fox. We never called it the Arlington,” said Days, who, as a child, caught musicals, Doris
Day comedies, and (every Easter) silent movie King of Kings there. She remem-bers beholding with wonder “this beau-tiful Spanish village, looking up at the stars. After the movie, when we’d come out [into daylight], I’d be momentarily confused.
“I still love going up there,” continued Days, who attended the Arlington’s 50th anniversary gala in 1981. “Much later, working for the city, there was some con-cern about the condition of the theater.”
According to Redmon, in the 1940s, the then-1,800-seater entered hard times, continuing into the 1950s with the advent of television. Fox let its Arlington lease lapse, and Metropolitan Theatres Cor-poration (the 1923-formed, Corwin-family-run chain) picked it up. In 1975, Metropolitan purchased the theater from owner Earl W. Huntley, investing $500,000 into restoring the venerable venue.
Since the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s inception 31 years ago, and certainly during Roger Durling’s 14 years as executive director, the Arlington has been SBIFF’s principal home.
“We use it for opening night and clos-ing night. We use it every night,” Durling said.
That includes a Johnny Depp tribute, Boyhood stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Boyhood stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia BoyhoodArquette last year, and an homage to Spot-light actors Michael Keaton and Rachel light actors Michael Keaton and Rachel lightMcAdams in February.
Durling has interviewed many actors on the Arlington’s stage, including Penélope Cruz and her husband, Javier Bardem, as well as The Artist star Jean The Artist star Jean The ArtistDujardin (on a stage once welcoming live acts Mae West and the Marx Broth-ers). Bardem — his first time inside the 2,200-seater — “was overwhelmed by how big and cavernous it was from the stage. It’s an extremely hospitable environment.”
It’s even more hospitable now to visiting celebrities, as the green rooms and bathrooms backstage received “a much-needed uplift a number of years ago,” Durling continued.
The very design of the award that SBIFF hands to such actors as Keaton and McAdams is modeled after the Arlington’s tower. “It really represents Santa Barbara,” Durling said.
Every year, Durling and his staff pick a big summer blockbuster to view there. But it’s not just moviego-ers who want to see their films there — it’s also the moviemakers.
“Robert Zemeckis, James Cam-eron, and Quentin Tarantino are extremely fond of that venue,” Durling said. “When [Zemeckis’s] last feature, The Walk, premiered, he really wanted it to be shown there.”
Ditto Cameron in 2009 with Avatar.Yeah, Hollywood’s Godzilla remakes
come and go — 2014’s broke big; the sequel arrives in 2018. Fingers crossed that the Arlington, the King Kong of Santa Barbara movie theaters, stays with us for at least another 85 years. n

Make Myself at HoMe
This past Sunday, May 15, was the annual Pearl Chase Society’s His-toric Homes Tour. My mom and I went out early and joined an
eclectic group of curious ticket holders as we paraded through a variety of well-preserved homes.
There were four Moody sisters cot-tages on Rosemary Lane in Montecito — charming, storybook dwellings made from salvaged materials with good-luck talismans buried in the fireplace hearths and manicured fairy-tale gardens outside. There was a gracious Mediterranean-style estate on upper Santa Barbara Street, and there were two Craftsman homes: one with Greene and Greene-style fix-tures and intricate woodwork through-out, and the other so nicely refurbished that it was featured on a television show as an example of bungalow restoration. While there was a wide variety of sizes and styles, the common theme running through the seven homes on display was the care and attention that the current owners have paid as they have lovingly brought their homes back to the style and charm of their original era.
I added an eighth home onto my own version of the tour when I stopped by an open house downtown afterward. The home at 312 West Victoria Street is a two-bedroom bungalow built in 1923. It’s in my neighborhood and looks similar to a house I lived in just a few blocks away, and not so long ago, so I was curious to see inside. The gate in the white picket fence leads up wide front steps and onto a long, covered porch. Entering the front door, my first impression was how bright, cute, and sunny this cottage is. The living room has high ceilings with three pro-
portionately tall windows and beauti-ful, shiny oak floors. The centerpiece of the room is an original fireplace with an arched opening of natural brick. Even as the sunlight streamed in on this warm afternoon, I knew the fireplace would be a favorite feature on our occasionally chilly winter days.
Straight through the living room is a full-sized dining room, an unexpected bonus in a cottage of this size, with similar tall windows looking out onto the back-yard, and those same gleaming wood floors. The bedrooms lie to the right side of the house, accessible from both the living room and dining room. Stepping into the back bedroom, I realized that the house has a Jack-and-Jill bathroom setup, with a full bath shared between the two bedrooms. This floor plan provides a circular traffic pattern, which I’ve always liked. Perhaps it’s good feng shui or maybe the happy memories — now that they’re distant — of my kids chasing each other around the house when they were little. Both of the bedrooms are good-sized, and one has an extra-large closet, another premium in homes of this era.
Back through the living and dining rooms, I found myself in the small yet super-charming kitchen. It features the original black-and-white tile counter and backsplash, built-in shelving on two walls, and windows above the sink that look out onto trees and greenery on the side of the house. Through the kitchen lies a separate laundry area with a stackable washer and dryer. Beyond that is a half bathroom, and in the very back of the house lies a den. It seems big enough to be a third bedroom, but I learned that because the windows are not large enough to jump
out of in an emergency, it can’t be used as a bedroom. No matter. Considering the myriad uses for a bonus room — sewing, yoga, TV watching, crafts, office space — I’m sure a new owner will have this space utilized many times over.
I was already charmed by the cottage, but when I walked out the

No matter. Considering the myriad uses for a bonus room—sewing, yoga, TV watching, crafts, office space—I’m sure a new owner will have this space utilized many times over.
I was already charmed by the cottage, but when I walked out the

Quintessential 1920’s Spanish Riviera home with city, ocean and island views, yet easy access to downtown. Considerately upgraded inside and out by Kyle Irwin Design, who preserved the early architecture, period detailing and design, then layered it with modern amenities. The open floor plan offers arched doorways, wood floors, natural light on all sides, built-in cabinetry and a beautifully updated kitchen with court house views through the dining and living room. There are 2 beds and a bath on the main floor, while downstairs offers another bed and bath and an additional living/media room and bar, which could also become a 4th bedroom. The intimate back yard is finely detailed with separate sitting and dining areas depending on the time of day, the use of natural Ipe wood decks, decomposed granite, olive trees, Santa Barbara stone walls, fountains and large hedges feel like you’re in the Cote d’Azur. This is a wonderful example of Santa BarbaraArchitecture in move-in condition.

Apparently, Santa Barbara is not the only town in the region to boast its very own botanic garden. Over an iced mocha and a biscuit (three times toasted, please), I learned from Puck Erickson-Lohnas that the Santa Ynez Valley has one of its own. In 2008, the Santa Ynez Valley
Botanic Garden Foundation, including Erickson-Lohnas as one of the founders, established the garden on land adjacent to River View Park, a community park bordering the Santa Ynez River in Buellton.
In addition to being one of the cofounders of the botanic garden, Erickson-Lohnas is also a principal at Arcadia Studio — a landscape architecture firm here in Santa Barbara. She is engaging, involved, extremely community-minded, funny, and, above all, an artist who is passionate about landscape design, soil, and growing things — not unlike a clean hippie with a good job.
By perusing the Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden’s mission statement, I learned that in addition to fostering new approaches to environmental educa-tion and the cultivation of an appreciation for the natural world, the garden also encourages community collaboration.
To illustrate, Erickson-Lohnas explained, “The garden is an incubator for community interaction and creativity. One of our boardmembers, Steve Schultz, manages the garden and has volunteered thousands of hours. Along with another volunteer, Jim Pugh, they cleared our secondary trail by hand.” She continued, “Another Santa Ynez Valley local, craftsman Pat Carson, collaborated with other garden members on the design of the Botanic Garden’s custom steel shed, which is a beautifully crafted piece of contemporary architecture.”
But wait … there’s more. This Saturday at the River View Park in Buellton, the Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden is hosting the 14th Annual Santa Ynez Valley Earth Day, which includes more than 100 eco-friendly exhibitors, demonstra-tions, family activities, a food court, a beer garden, and live music by Jeff Pine, The Ruben Lee Dalton Band, and The Caverns.
If you’re like me, you’re probably asking, “Hey, what gives? Didn’t we already have Earth Day?” Well, it seems that the Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Asso-ciation chose the official Earth Day and the park as their venue for their spring wine-tasting event. Not to be deterred, the Botanic Garden made lemonade from the lemons because, as Erickson-Lohnas explained, “It was actually a gift. We real-ized that every day is Earth Day in the Santa Ynez Valley, and we can welcome exhibitors from other areas by hosting our Earth Day in May.”
4∙1∙1 The Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden hosts the 14th Annual S.Y.V. Earth Day on Saturday, May 21, noon-5 p.m., at River View Park (151 Sycamore Dr., Day on Saturday, May 21, noon-5 p.m., at River View Park (151 Sycamore Dr., Day

back door, I realized it has a completely enclosed, fenced backyard. It doesn’t have the storybook Moody sisters land-scaping (yet), but I could already see my dog playing on the grass and friends enjoying the private patio. Adjacent to the backyard is the garage, with a long driveway that can accommodate sev-eral cars. This may be one of the most valuable features in this downtown location, where many of the neighbors have to juggle on-street parking.
I took one last walk through the inside of this charming bungalow and paused for a minute on the veranda, looking out at the beautiful jacaranda tree in bloom out beyond the front yard. It’s evident that this home, like the seven polished houses on the His-toric Homes tour, has good bones and period authenticity. It just needs a new owner to cherish its character and per-sonality, which I predict will happen very soon.
