ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE FOR GOD By Fr. Joshua Waltz As a young man, the last thing Fr. Joshua

Waltz ever thought he would be was a Catholic priest. But a series of choices—some bad and some good—ultimately led him to enter the seminary. In this talk, Fr. Waltz shares an incredible vocation story that involves heartbreak, robbers, Europe, and several miracles—all showing that there is nothing more exciting than a life lived for Jesus Christ.

LIFE TEEN GOSPEL REFLECTION - (MATTHEW 13:44-52) With just a few fish and loaves of bread, Jesus provided for thousands. What stands out to me in this Gospel is that the disciples didn't even ask Jesus to do that - they just assumed everyone needed to go home to eat. It's almost like they didn't feel like Jesus could have done anything for them. For everything that we need in our lives, praying and asking God for help doesn't seem like such a hard thing to do. Yet, there are so many times when I think that I can just do it on my own or I even question if God is capable of doing what I need. In the culture we live in today, it is nerve racking to ask people for help. No one wants to admit that he or she isn't strong enough to handle the situation alone, and if we do, we feel weak. This Gospel reminds me that I can trust God to provide and I don't need to question whether He is capable. God will provide; all I need to do is just ask and believe.

Morgan, 17 Gospel Reflections are provided by Life Teen’s Liturgy Planning Guide, 2013

Our Life Teen Core Training was last Saturday, July 26. This was the first time that

everyone met, with the exception of Jess & Christina who were on

vacation. We learned about the responsibilities that we have as a

Core Member. We also learned how to facilitate a Life Night and

small groups, plus we fulfilled our commitment for compliance.

This is a diocesan policy which requires anyone working with youth

and vulnerable adults to be fingerprinted and review the state’s

mandatory reporting requirements. We also watched videos in

regards to safe environment. As Core Members, our number one priority is to keep our

teens safe. The video talked about the forms of abuse that need to be reported. We

hope and pray that we never need to do this, but if we do we will know the steps we need

to take.

We also spent time planning this year’s Life Nights. Next weekend is our first event —

Parent & Teen Life Night! This will give our parents an opportunity to experience a Life

Night and to be apprised of what we have planned for the coming year. See you there!

Lupita Parra, Director of Youth Ministry

We Invite ALL Parents of Teens to Come and Experience a Life Night Next weekend, August 10.

Have you ever wondered what happens at Life Night? Then this is the night for you! Join us

for our Parent & Teen Life Night for a hands-on experience. The evening begins with Mass @

5 p.m. and continues in the Parish Hall until 7:45 p.m. All parents of teens are welcome.

Due to the activities planned, we ask that only parents and teens attend this evening.

Thank you for understanding and we look forward to seeing you there!

ST. TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS FEAST DAY: JULY 29

A brilliant philosopher who stopped believing in God when she was 14, Edith Stein was so captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila (October 15) that she began a spiritual journey that led to her Baptism in 1922. Twelve years later she imitated Teresa by becoming a Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.

Born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), Edith abandoned Judaism in her teens. As a student at the University of Göttingen, she became fascinated by phenomenology, an approach to philosophy. Excelling as a protégé of Edmund Husserl, one of the leading phenomenologists, Edith earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1916. She continued as a university teacher until 1922 when she moved to a Dominican school in Speyer; her appointment as lecturer at the Educa-tional Institute of Munich ended under pressure from the Nazis.

After living in the Cologne Carmel (1934-38), she moved to the Carmel-ite monastery in Echt, Netherlands. The Nazis occupied that country in 1940. In retaliation for being denounced by the Dutch bishops, the Nazis arrested all Dutch Jews who had become Christians. Teresa Bene-dicta and her sister Rosa, also a Cath-olic, died in a gas chamber in Ausch-witz on August 9, 1942.

Blessed John Paul II beatified Teresa Benedicta in 1987 and canonized her 12 years later.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Most parishes are now aware of the catechumenate and the journey of new faithful in the RCIA, but this form of sacramental initiation disappeared from view in the thirteenth century along with many other ancient practices. Life back then was hard, and often too short, and priests were increasingly insistent about the responsibility of parents to baptize children in danger of death. Since everyone in that society was under unimaginable threat from famine, warfare, and plague, the liturgical rites changed quickly. Everyone was in danger of death all the time. No longer were babies immersed in fonts, being lowered into the water, although the ritual books never backed down from immersion. Infusion was the new way, a simple pouring of a few drops of water on the child's forehead.

The catechumenate collapsed, being reduced to the recitation of the Creed and an Our Father at every baptism. Amazingly, any provi-sion for adult baptism was shelved, so that as late as the 1950s, a person being baptized was presumed to be an infant, unable to answer for him or herself. Questions of creed and commitment were put to the godparents, not to the person being baptized. Even Doro-thy Day and Thomas Merton, famous adult converts, remained mute at their baptisms while their sponsors answered for them. In hindsight all this appears strikingly odd, yet it was accepted as the way things were. We have good reason to give thanks for the vigorous reforms of the last fifty years!

--Rev. James Field
