We are in pursuit of an individual with both high-level vision for a great American city and the ability to implement at the ground level. This person will possess the ability to thought-fully distill policy direction and to present a potential spectrum of practical options. This individual will be a strategic thinker with the capacity to foresee the consequences of decisions to the future reality of the City; with the capability of assisting leadership as they refine their vision of the City and with the talent to understand politics, while not being personally involved. S/he will be creative, resilient, straightforward and self-confident; with strong communication skills high-lighted by tact and diplomacy. This individual will believe in transparency and openness; will demonstrate enthusiasm and energy and will consistently reveal a sense of humor. A willingness to challenge established thinking will be important. This person will have demonstrated a strong record of achievement in building the physical and social community. S/he will pos-sess an outstanding knowledge of urban design, redevelopment, economic development and community collaboration. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree, with preference for a Master’s degree. Ten years of senior level management within a complex organi-zation is ideal. In his first term, Mayor Ralph Becker, FAICP, implemented his Blueprint for a Great American City, helping to create better neighborhoods, schools, a cleaner environment, and striving to provide equality for all. Now in his second term, Mayor Becker has begun work on his Livability Agenda, which aims to take Salt Lake City from a “good” city, to a “great” one. In his service to the city, Mayor Becker draws on his experience as a planner. He served as the Utah State Plan-ning Coordinator under Governor Scott Matheson and then went on to launch his own Salt Lake City-based consulting firm, Bear West, specializing in community planning, environmental assess-ment, public lands use and public involvement.
