Dear Family of Faith,

This week we turn back to the topic of prayer and one re-

source in particular. A resource so rare in our current world

that we have forgotten what it is. A resource so fleeting that

uttering its name makes it disappear. This precious gift of

God is of course, Silence. Silence is essential for prayer, and

by silence we mean more than the absence of sound.

Every parent knows of or has tried to use the “silent game”

to try to quiet down their children at some point. Yet, even

when there is an absence of sound, we know that the chil-

dren are anything but silent, they usually poke and prod,

make faces, and try to disturb their sibling in order to “win”

the game. We recognize that true silence is more than simply

a lack of sound waves, but rather it is a state of being. Silence

includes a quieting of the whole self, a calming of the waters

of our soul so that the reflection of God can more clearly be

seen. This type of silence is essential if we want to grow in

prayer.

This is why silence is an essential part of our Sunday celebra-

tion. The instructions for the celebration of the mass says the

following, about the role of silence. “Its purpose…depends

on the time it occurs in each part of the celebration. Thus,

within the Act of Penitence and again after the invitation to

pray, all recollect themselves; but at the conclusion of a read-

ing or the homily, all meditate briefly on what they have

heard; then after Communion, they praise and pray to God

in their hearts. Even before the celebration itself, it is com-

mendable that silence be observed in the church, in the sac-

risty, in the vesting room, and in adjacent areas, so that all

may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred action in a

devout and fitting manner.” In other words, silence has a

purpose. Before mass, after mass, during mass, silence is far

more than simply “waiting” for the next word or action of

the priest. Silence is an opportunity for you to actively partic-

ipate in the prayer that we are offering as a community.

Silence can be hard to find. Take moments in your car, be-

fore bed, or on walks to allow your mind to rest and let God

speak to you. In addition, Mass may be the only time where

some of us find that silence. Children will always be children

and at times make noise, but we as a parish family can set an

example and expectation by entering into those times of si-

lence ourselves. By no means do I practice this perfectly my-

self, but as a community we can work together to provide

this precious resource to our world and really turn our

church into a house of prayer.

Querida Familia de Fe,

Esta semana volvemos al tema de la oración y a un recurso en

particular. Un recurso tan escaso en nuestro mundo actual que

nos hemos olvidado de qué se trata. Un recurso tan fugaz que

pronunciar su nombre lo hace desaparecer. Este precioso regalo

de Dios es, por supuesto, el Silencio. El silencio es esencial para

la oración, y por silencio entendemos más que la ausencia de

sonido.

Todos los padres conocen o han intentado utilizar el “juego si-

lencioso” para tratar de calmar a sus hijos en algún momento.

Sin embargo, incluso cuando hay una ausencia de sonido, sa-

bemos que los niños son todo menos silenciosos, por lo general

empujan y pinchan, hacen muecas y tratan de molestar a su her-

mano para "ganar" el juego. Reconocemos que el verdadero si-

lencio es más que una simple falta de ondas sonoras, sino que es

un estado del ser. El silencio incluye un apaciguamiento de todo

el yo, un apaciguamiento de las aguas de nuestra alma para que el

reflejo de Dios pueda verse más claramente. Este tipo de silencio

es fundamental si queremos crecer en la oración.

Por eso el silencio es una parte esencial de nuestra celebración

dominical. Las instrucciones para la celebración de la misa dicen

lo siguiente, sobre el papel del silencio. “Su propósito… depende

del momento en que ocurra en cada parte de la celebración. Así,

dentro del Acto de Penitencia y nuevamente después de la invi-

tación a orar, todos se recogen; pero al final de una lectura o de

la homilía, todos meditan brevemente sobre lo que han escu-

chado; luego, después de la Comunión, alaban y oran a Dios en

sus corazones. Incluso antes de la celebración misma, es encomia-

ble que se guarde silencio en la iglesia, en la sacristía, en la ves-

tidura y en los espacios adyacentes, para que todos se dispongan

a realizar la acción sagrada de manera devota y adecuada." En

otras palabras, el silencio tiene un propósito. Antes de la misa,

después de la misa, durante la misa, el silencio es mucho más que

simplemente “esperar” la siguiente palabra o acción del sacer-

dote. El silencio es una oportunidad para que usted participe

activamente en la oración que ofrecemos como comunidad.

El silencio puede ser difícil de encontrar. Tómese unos momen-

tos en su automóvil, antes de acostarse o en caminatas para per-

mitir que su mente descanse y deje que Dios le hable. Además, la

Misa puede ser el único momento en el que algunos de nosotros

encontremos ese silencio. Los niños siempre serán niños y en

ocasiones harán ruido, pero nosotros, como familia parroquial,

podemos dar el ejemplo y la expectativa entrando nosotros mis-

mos en esos momentos de silencio. De ninguna manera práctico

esto perfectamente yo mismo, pero como comunidad podemos

trabajar juntos para proporcionar este valioso recurso a nuestro

mundo y convertir nuestra iglesia en una casa de oración.

SAINT JUDE FEAST DAY: October 28th daily mass at 5:30pm

will be bilingual. We will have Saint Jude candles available.

TRUNK & TREAT: We are partnering up with the Janesville

Community Center this year for Trunk & Treat. This will be held

Wednesday, October 27th 5-6:30pm in the Parish Center parking

lot. This is a free event with food, games, and fun!

DAILY MASS: There will be no daily mass held at Saint Patrick

November 2nd through November 4th due to some work on the

church. Instead Fr Drew will be holding 3 masses at Mt Olivet on

Nov 2nd 7am, 12pm, and 5:30pm and on Nov 3rd/4th mass will

be held at Saint John Vianney at 5:30pm. There will be no adora-

tion on Tues Nov 2nd and Thurs Nov 4th.

VOCATIONS WEEK: Girls ages 5-13 who would like to process

into church dressed in their Sunday Best or your First Commun-

ion dress, for the Sunday Masses on November 6th and 7th. We

need girls at all the Masses 4pm on Sat, 9am Sun, 10:30am Sun,

and 12pm Sun. That weekend kicks off National Vocations Aware-

ness Week. Please meet at the back of church before the start of

munitario de Janesville para Trunk & Treat. Esto sera el miércoles 27

de octubre de 5 a 6:30pm en el estacionamiento del Centro Parroqui-

al. ¡Este es un evento gratuito con comida, juegos y diversión!

MISA DIARIA: No habrá misa diaria en San Patricio del 2 al 4 de

noviembre debido a algunos trabajos en la iglesia. En cambio, el Padre

Drew llevará a cabo 3 misas en Mt Olivet el 2 de noviembre a las 7am,

12pm y 5:30pm y el 3 y 4 de noviembre la misa se llevará a cabo en

Saint John Vianney a las 5:30pm. No habrá adoración el martes 2 de

noviembre y el jueves 4 de noviembre.

SEMANA DE VOCACIONES: Niñas de 5 a 13 años que deseen in-

gresar a la iglesia vestidas con sus mejores trajes de domingo o con su

traje de primera comunión, para las misas dominicales del 6 y 7 de

noviembre. Necesitamos niñas en todas las misas a las 4pm el sábado,

9am domingo, 10:30am domingo y 12pm domingo. Ese fin de semana

da comienzo a la Semana Nacional de Concientización sobre las

Vocaciones. Reúnase en la parte trasera de la iglesia antes del comien-
