Focusing the Gospel

Key words & phrases: My

kingdom does not belong to this

world, who belongs to the truth

To the point: Pilate's question,

“I am not a Jew, am I?” only

reveals a tension between

earthly kingdoms: Rome vs.

Israel. Jesus' response,

however, unearths a broader

tension: this world vs. Jesus'

kingdom. The broader tension

embroils all peoples in the

challenge to accept Jesus'

kingship not as power over but

as power to. Consequently, the

truth of Jesus' kingdom does not

lie in anything of this world but in

hearts turned to God, ears

attuned to Jesus' voice, and

actions bespeaking faithful

following of Jesus. We navigate

the tension between the way of

the world and the way of Jesus'

kingdom by putting flesh on the

truth: laying down one's life for

others.

Connecting the Gospel

… to the First Reading:

Christ's presence and kingship

are not found in the

“clouds” (see First and Second

readings) but in his suffering and

death (see second reading and

Gospel) for our sakes and in the

tension within our own lives as

we struggle to align ourselves

with the truth of the kingdom of

Christ our King.

… to experience: Normally

kingship is associated with

power, prestige, and wealth.

Surprisingly, the Gospel

presents Christ the King on trial

and about to suffer and die.

Solemnidad de Cristo Rey

Estudio de las Lecturas Enfocando el Evangelio

Palabras y frases claves:

Mi reino no pertenece a este

mundo, que pertenece a la verdad

Al punto: La pregunta de Pilato:

"No soy judío, ¿verdad?" sólo

revela una tensión entre los reinos

terrenales: Roma vs. Israel. La

respuesta de Jesús, sin embargo,

desentierra una tensión más

amplia: este mundo vs. el reino de

Jesús. La tensión más amplia

enreda a todos los pueblos en el

desafío de aceptar la realeza de

Jesús no como poder sobre sino

como poder para hacerlo. En

consecuencia, la verdad del reino

de Jesús no se encuentra en nada

de este mundo, sino en corazones

vueltos a Dios, oídos en sintonía

con la voz de Jesús y acciones

que hablan fielmente de Jesús.

Navegamos por la tensión entre el

camino del mundo y el camino del

reino de Jesús poniendo carne en

la verdad: dando la vida por los

demás.

Conectando al Evangelio

… a la Primera Lectura:

La presencia y la realeza de Cristo

no se encuentran en las

"nubes" (ver Primera y Segunda

lecturas) sino en su sufrimiento y

muerte (ver segunda lectura y

Evangelio) por nuestro bien y en

la tensión dentro de nuestras

propias vidas mientras luchamos

por alinearnos con la verdad del

reino de Cristo nuestro Rey.

… experimentar: Normalment

e, la realeza se asocia con el

poder, el prestigio y la riqueza.

Sorprendentemente, el Evangelio

presenta a Cristo Rey en juicio y a

punto de sufrir y morir.

For All the Souls of the Dead

O God, you willed that your Only Begotten Son, having conquered death, should pass

over into the realm of heaven. I pray that all your faithful departed servants, who have left this earthly life, may join

your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and gaze eternally on you, their Creator and

Redeemer, in heaven. Amen
