Now & Next
Our Nourish for Caregivers Support Group is taking January off. Please join us when we resume from 10 to 11:30 am Feb. 1 and the first Saturday of each month. Nourish provides practical, emotional and spir-itual support for caregivers — whether you are caring at a distance or in your own home. We continue to hold all caregivers in prayer. For more information about Nourish, please contact Aimee Gustitis, BSN, RN, JD, at [email protected] or (610) 724-8950.
Caregivers: No January Meeting
Beginning Next Saturday: Earlier Saturday Vigil Mass, Confessions
In response to longstanding requests by many parishioners, St. John’s will change our Saturday Vigil Mass to 4 pm (instead of 5 pm), beginning Jan. 1. Confessions will be heard from 3:15 to 3:45 pm or, as always, by appointment at the Parish House: (610) 874-3418. These new times will continue on a trial basis for the rest of the winter, when we will determine whether to make the change seasonal or per-manent.
Our annual after-Christmas drive begins next Saturday, Jan. 4. We will be seeking clean, gently used men’s, women’s and children’s coats, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, boots and other warm outerwear (no indoor clothing items, please). This collection benefits residents at many loca-tions across our community. Please ensure that items are in good condition (no stains, tears, missing buttons or broken zippers). Kindly empty pockets, and fasten pairs of gloves. Please hold all donations until Jan. 4. Thank you in advance for your generous support.
Close the year on a life-saving note! Our American Red Cross Winter Blood Drive runs from 8 am to 1 pm Tuesday, Dec. 31, in the gym. Avoid a wait by reserving your time in advance. All donors receive a long-sleeve T-shirt while supplies last. Sign up at www.redcrossblood.org (sponsor code st. john).

Tuesday: Roll Up Your Sleeve
Dear Parishioners: With full hearts, we send the world’s biggest hug to the hundreds of you who sup-ported this year’s Christmas ministries with incredible generosity. It was an season of exceptional care and
selflessness, from the financial outpouring to the hundreds of beautifully wrapped gifts. Giving of your time, treasure and talent, you brightened the season and lifted the circumstances of more than 1,000 people. Specifically: Adopt a Family (pictured) fulfilled the wish lists of 66 entire families. The St. Nicholas Project provided hundreds of toys to CityTeam and Catholic Social Ser-vices; gifts for nearly 200 elderly and disa-bled residents of Kinder Park housing com-plex; and gift cards to the St. Vincent de Paul Society to assist families in crisis all year long. Our Thanksgiving and Christmas meal ministries provided holiday groceries for 100+ families.
Our Advent Angels dispatched 90 visitors bearing flowers, cookies and warmth to our bereaved, ill and homebound. Thank you for celebrating the birth of Christ by imitating His compassion and love. (And this was only December. Please see page 3 for a look at the rest of the year!)
Our Christmas Thank You

March 24: Feast of Blesed A
‘I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits,
here in this world and in the life to come.’ Henri J.M. Nouwen
D ear Parishioners:
These days close another year of extraordinary love and faith in action at St. John Chrysostom Parish. Your pray-
ers, generosity, time and example all year long have touched more lives than you can ever know: from newborns to
neighbors in crisis; longtime parishioners to first-time visitors; aging sub-
urban sisters to city men experiencing homelessness; people who are
homebound, ill, hospitalized or bereaved; men, women and children in
tremendous need from Chester to Haiti; and so many more. In times of
great sorrow, great need, and great joy, you were there and your pres-
ence was felt. For that, and on behalf of those you have assisted, we
offer our heartfelt thanks.
This year has been a busy one, with so much
to be grateful for! We:
Celebrated 65 Baptisms, 46 Funeral Masses, 59 First Communions, and 14 weddings;
Welcomed 84 new parish households, as well as a new Mother of Providence School prin-
cipal, Sara Dempsey; and a new Youth Program assistant, Kyle Slinkman (left);
Counted more than 300 adults and youth serving across our 45 parish ministries;
Donated nearly $50,000 to the Catholic Charities Appeal, serving vulnerable area residents; and nearly $32,000 to
our Society of St. Vincent de Paul chapter, serving our neighbors in need;
Visited and served at CityTeam and the Bernardine Center in Chester, Habitat for Humanity
in Delaware, ManorCare Nursing Home in Wallingford, Kinder Park in Woodlyn, Crozer Ches-
ter Medical Center, more than 100 homes in need, and elsewhere;
Donated generously to the housing, educational, spiritual and health services provided to
vulnerable men, women and children by Mother’s Home of Darby, CityTeam, Catholic Social
Services of Chester, Food for the Poor, Providence Center of Kensington, and Kay Lasante
clinic in Port au Prince, Haiti;
Initiated Nourish for Caregivers, a monthly support group serving caregivers;
Celebrated our first Blue Mass, honoring first responders (left); our first Youth Sunday and
YouthServe events (right); and our first Children’s Book Drive for Chester school libraries;
Enjoyed Bingo, four seasons of CYO, Ministry Appreciation Night, Cou-
ples Nights Out, Earth Day, MLK Gospel Concert, Sensory Friendly Easter
and Santa events, Dinners with Friends, the Season of Creation, our Ad-
vent Festival, Fair Trade Sale, and lots of Sunday doughnuts and coffee;
Focused on gun violence and built our interfaith presence;
Provided more than a ton of non-
perishable food to the Bernardine Cen-
ter and Catholic Social Services;
Recycled more than five tons of elec-
tronics to provide jobs and training for
adults reintegrating into society;
Cooked and delivered 575 casseroles and 3,300+ individual meals through our St.
John’s Hospice and Aid for Friends ministries, and produced nearly 500 unique
hand-knitted garments and shawls through our Prayer Shawl Ministry; and
Showered those in need with coats, hats, diapers, toiletries, clinic supplies, school supplies and more.
Never underestimate your personal contribution. Each of us strengthens and enhances our parish body. May God richly
bless you and your families in the new year!

Our Parish Giving Our collections for Dec. 22-23 and Christmas will be reported next week. Thank you!
Looking Back, and Ahead
A s we near the close of 2019, we thank those of you who faithfully support St. John Chrysostom financially, recognizing the material, spiritual and emotional support we
provide to thousands of people in and around our community. We do so with an aging 17-acre campus and a House of God that (like yours) requires continual maintenance. Meanwhile, our collections have declined this year. If you are not donating, we respectfully ask your support. If you have not increased your donation in years, we respectfully ask you to consider doing so. Please join Fr. Ed and other parishioners in helping us keep our parish strong and serving others. Giving Options: Parish Giving (http://bit.ly/givesjc): Hundreds of parishioners find online giving easy, secure and
helpful to budgeting. If you give online, please show your support by dropping a Parish Giving pew card in the collection. Please note that St. John’s does not administer Parish Giving accounts. You may direct questions about your account to Parish Giving at (866) 307-7140.
Venmo (new!): We’re on Venmo at @SJC-Church. Make sure to look for our SJC logo (above right). Weekly Collection Envelopes: Many parishioners still enjoy this longstanding method. If you are not
receiving envelopes, please contact the Parish House: (610) 874-3418. For any questions about donating to SJC, please contact Rosemary Endres, Business Manager, at (610) 874-3418 x 108 or [email protected].
However you choose to give, please know that we are grateful for your support; recognize your sacrifice; and assure you of transparent, meticulous stewardship of your gift. May you and your families be abundantly blessed this season and all year long.
