Soup and Substance, sponsored by the Saint Fabian Pelicans Youth Group, takes place today, Sunday, March 4, from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. in Kash Hall. The young people will share their faith with us through dance, reflection and song. We can all learn a lot from them.

********** Are you still looking for something to do during this holy season of Lent? Here is something for every-one. At the different times during the Mass, when the kneelers are put up or down, why not try to do it quietly?

********** Some thoughts about today’s Scripture readings: The Temple and its surrounding complex on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount was a very holy site to the Jews of Jesus’ time. From the time of King Solomon, this was a place of prayer, pilgrimage and sacrifice. The Temple went through many attacks, desecrations, destructions and reconstructions. At the time of Jesus, the people would have been gathering in the second Temple, built by Herod. This Temple would be de-stroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. It was here that Mary and Joseph had presented their Son to the Lord and the place where they were greeted by Simeon and Anna. It was here that Mary and Joseph found their twelve-year-old Son. It was here that Jesus preached and prayed. Since many pilgrims came to this site to fulfill the Law and to offer sacrifice, local merchants saw this as a site, an ideal location, for doing business. Money was changed for official Temple offerings and sheep, oxen and birds were sold for sacrifice and the people were often cheated by the merchants.. Today we hear of Jesus returning to Jerusalem and becoming angry at the sight of all this business and chaos in his Father’s house. What was his reaction to all this? He drives out the merchants and animals, spills the money and overturns tables. Try to imagine what this looked like. What do you think about all this? In the first reading today, we heard about God’s commandments. (For your information, that was the topic of last Tuesday’s session in the R.C.I.A.) The first three of the commandments go into great detail about respect for God the Father – that there be no other gods, that God’s name should not be taken in vain and that the Sabbath should be kept as a sacred day of rest. The other commandments, dealing with love and concern for our neighbor, were equally as important. Yet here, in this most holy place, the Temple was defiled and the poor were ignored and even cheated by the merchants. In our world today, we hear stories each day about how these commandments are broken. Right and wrong seem to be blurred at times, Perhaps, as another exercise for us all during this holy season of Lent, we might think of some ways in which we could “turn over some tables.” How might we cast out some of the things in our own lives that seem to keep us from being the good, faithful, loving, forgiving people God made us to be? This is the Opening Prayer (or Collect) from the Mass of the Third Sunday of Lent: O God, author of every mercy and of all goodness, look graciously on this confession of our lowliness, that we, who are bowed down by our conscience, may always be lifted up by your mercy.

READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND FIRST READING: EXODUS 20:1-17 In those days, God delivered all these commandments: "I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me. You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. "You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished the one who takes his name in vain. "Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you. In six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. "Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything else that belongs to him."

SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 1:22-25 Brothers and sisters: Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews

and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

GOSPEL: JOHN 2:13-25 Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace." His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?" But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

If your parish is reading from Year B of the Lectionary today, and not Year A, as is normally done when there are elect present for the scrutinies and preparing for Easter baptism, you hear about Jesus driving the money-changers from the temple. If you wished to get as close as possible to this site today, you would in fact be at a Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, built on the ruins of Herod’s temple. Archeologists believe that this striking, gold-domed crown of a shrine is set precisely where the Holy of Holies once was. Jews believe that the rock is the exact spot where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. It is not a mosque, as some think, but a shrine, the oldest one in the Muslim world. For them, the rock is the place from which the Prophet Mohammed ascended on a visit to heaven. The Crusaders mistook the shrine for the actual Temple of Solomon, and the infamous Knights Templar used it as their headquarters and model for their churches elsewhere. The geometric perfection of the shrine is a mathematician’s dream. The inscriptions are not exactly hospitable though, since they encourage Christians to “depart from error” and declare that “Jesus son of Mary was only a messenger of God.” In an-cient times, those who prayed here after walk-ing around the rock were given a certificate entitling the bearer to admission to paradise. The ticket had to be buried with them. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PAGE 5 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 4, 2018

The Third Week of Lent For the Third Sunday of Lent we read the Ten Commandments and witness Jesus driving the money changers out of the temple. He says, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” John's Gospel tells us the point: “Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. Jesus challenges the people in his hometown of Nazareth to look at him in a new way - “No prophet is accepted in his own native place.” In a fury, they drive him out of the temple. Peter asks Jesus the limits of forgiveness. Jesus says that we must forgive again and again. He tells the parable about the servant, who though forgiven himself, does not forgive his fellow servants. Jesus has come to fulfill the law and the words of the prophets, not abolish them. When someone claimed that Jesus must be using Satan's power to heal, Jesus responds “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house.” When asked to name the “greatest” commandment, Jesus names two, thus putting together the necessity of loving God with our entire being and loving our neighbor as our very selves. The week ends as Jesus tells a powerful story of the Pharisee and the tax collector praying in the temple. I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” For the Fourth Sunday of Lent we read Jesus' words to Nicodemus in the Fourth Gospel. Jesus will be lifted up on the cross to heal us from the power of sin and death. This gospel, which is written like a trial, tells us the verdict. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

Daily Prayer This Week This is a pivotal week of Lent. We can solidify the patterns we have begun or we can make a new start, if we haven't been able to get started yet. If we have begun to recognize what needs realigning in our lives and have begun to fast and abstain from some things that get in the way of our relationship with the Lord, then we are engaging in a struggle. We are likely un-covering resistance and experiencing our personal sinfulness face-to-face. This is all preparing us for a deeper conversion, a readiness for reconciliation with God and the graces that will allow us to be a source of reconciliation with others. This is the time when we begin to see and experience how much God loves us at a new and more personal level. These graces prepare us to keep our eyes focused on Jesus in the weeks ahead - to learn from him, to fall in love with him more deeply and to be drawn to imitate him more completely. If we are just getting started with our Lenten journey, renewing our desires for these graces will be all we need to begin with a renewed openness. God does not need a lot of time to convince us of his love for us. This is a week about God's love for us and our call to love others the same way. It is a week to keep our daily focus on naming a desire each morning. The day ahead will shape what we ask for as our feet hit the floor in the morning. Pausing to thank the Lord for this day and to ask for the grace to let our mind and heart be renewed in the concrete circumstances, relationships and obligations of our day. Throughout the day, we can then return to those desires in back-ground of our awareness. Our request for the Lord's help is always there and our consciousness of it will help us make the choice we desire to make, to let go of what we need to let go of, to add what we need to add. This will take us deeper and deeper into self-awareness and a sense of our need for a Savior, who is right there to embrace us and give us the graces we ask for.

“By your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure.” - Preface for Lent I

Two little words, but they mean so much. The Confirmation Class Bake Sale was a huge success! We raised a total of $1,950.00 that will help fund our Vacation Bible School this year! We could not have done that without the support of everyone. To all the wonderful bakers who donated such delicious treats, to the students who staffed the sale along with their catechists, to the generous people who purchased the goodies, and to all who stopped by to lend their support, we send a heartfelt thank you! May God abundantly bless each of you. A special congratulations to the winner of our Raffle prize, a 1987 signed and certified Walter Payton trading card, Rich Hallman! Thank you to our parishioner, Alan Milewski, for donating the raffle prize!

BLESSING OF EXPECTANT MOTHERS

REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE

God comes to us through others when we least expect Him — even through “YOU”. By your Baptism into the Body of

Christ, YOU have been “called” — to show Him your love and service to other members of His Body, the Church.

WE REALLY DO NEED YOU! Many of our ministers have retired due to health issues and we are really short staffed at our Nursing Homes. Maybe you are the one who is willing to provide and share the ministry of your presence, prayer, and friendship by bringing the Eucharist to those who are sick, elderly or homebound, or in one of the Nursing Homes

we service or on an individual basis? THEY NEED YOU! Our Parish NEEDS YOU! There is as much to “gain” as to “give” and the benefits are more than you can ever imagine.

Time involvement can be once a week to only once a month. The choice is yours.

For those interested in becoming a Minister of Care, the training program will be at:

St. Germaine Parish Center by Jeanne Lassandrello March 3 & 10, 2018

9711 S. Kolin in Oak Lawn, IL 60453 Saturdays — 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Participation in these two sessions meets the Office for Divine Worship, Archdiocese of Chicago, requirements to be eligible for mandating as a parish Minister of Care, ministering to the sick and homebound members of the parish. Participants must be approved and sent by a member of their parish Pastoral Team. Preparation includes such topics as spirituality of ministry, ministry to the aged, the experience of suffering, dying and death, pastoral listening skills, prayer and Eucharist, and the theological and practical dimensions of ministry. This seminar provides fresh theology and insights into the pastoral practice of the Ministry of Care (Bring a bagged lunch). Jeanne Lassandrello is commissioned as a Lay Ecclesial Minister in the Archdiocese of Chicago. She served as Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education at St Christopher Parish in Midlothian for 8 years. She is currently the Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education at St Germaine Parish in Oak Lawn. Jeanne earned a Master of Arts Degree in Pastoral Ministry at Catholic Theological Union, and is presently a candidate for the Doctorate of Ministry from the University of St Mary of the Lake.

Won’t you consider this fulfilling ministry ? Listen within. Is God calling “YOU” to REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEOME — you’re only a phone call away —

To register just dial 708-458-2562 no later than March 3rd. You must be approved by a member of our parish Pastoral Team. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

May God Bless You, Paula Daley, Ministry of Care Director

P.S. For any of you “seasoned” Ministers of Care, this might be a nice refresher course to gain some perspective in your ministry.

PIERWSZE CZYTANIE Wj 20,1-17 Og³oszenie przykazañ Bo¿ych

Pamiêtaj o dniu szabatu, aby go uœwiêciæ. Szeœæ dni bêdziesz pracowaæ i wykonywaæ wszystkie twe zajêcia. Dlatego pob³ogos³awi³ Pan dzieñ szabatu i uzna³ go za œwiêty.

Oto S³owo Bo¿e.

PSALM RESPONSORYJNY: Ps 19,8.9.10.11

S³owa Twe, Panie, daj¹ ¿ycie wieczne.

Prawo Pañskie jest doskona³e i pokrzepia duszê, œwiadectwo Pana niezawodne, uczy prostaczka m¹droœci. Jego s³uszne nakazy raduj¹ serce, jaœnieje przykazanie Pana i olœniewa oczy. BojaŸñ Pana jest szczera i trwa na wieki, s¹dy Pana prawdziwe, a wszystkie razem s³uszne. Cenniejsze nad z³oto, nad z³oto najczystsze, s³odsze od miodu p³yn¹cego z plastra.

S³owa Twe, Panie, daj¹ ¿ycie wieczne.

DRUGIE CZYTANIE 1 Kor 1,22-25 Chrystus ukrzy¿owany jest m¹droœci¹ Bo¿¹

Czytanie z Pierwszego Listu œwiêtego Paw³a Aposto³a do Koryntian

Oto S³owo Bo¿e.

ŒPIEW PRZED EWANGELI¥: J 3,16

Chwa³a Tobie, Królu wieków

Tak Bóg umi³owa³ œwiat, ¿e da³ swojego

Syna Jednorodzonego; ka¿dy, kto w Niego wierzy, ma ¿ycie wieczne.

Chwa³a Tobie, Królu wieków

EWANGELIA J 2,13-25 ZapowiedŸ mêki i zmartwychwstania

S³owa Ewangelii wed³ug œwiêtego Jana

Zbli¿a³a siê pora Paschy ¿ydowskiej i

Jezus uda³ siê do Jerozolimy. W œwi¹tyni

napotka³ tych, którzy sprzedawali wo³y,

baranki i go³êbie oraz siedz¹cych za

sto³ami bankierów. Wówczas

sporz¹dziwszy sobie bicz ze sznurków,

powyrzuca³ wszystkich ze œwi¹tyni,

tak¿e baranki i wo³y, porozrzuca³ monety

bankierów, a sto³y powywraca³. Do tych

zaœ, którzy sprzedawali go³êbie, rzek³:

„WeŸcie to st¹d, a nie róbcie z domu

Ojca mego targowiska”. Uczniowie Jego

przypomnieli sobie, ¿e napisano:

„Gorliwoœæ o dom Twój po¿era Mnie”.

W odpowiedzi zaœ na to ¯ydzi rzekli do

Niego: „Jakim znakiem wyka¿esz siê

wobec nas, skoro takie rzeczy czynisz?”

Jezus da³ im tak¹ odpowiedŸ: „Zburzcie

tê œwi¹tyniê, a Ja w trzech dniach

wzniosê j¹ na nowo”.

Powiedzieli do Niego ¯ydzi:

„Czterdzieœci szeœæ lat budowano tê

œwi¹tyniê, a Ty j¹ wzniesiesz w przeci¹gu

trzech dni?”

On zaœ mówi³ o œwi¹tyni swego cia³a.

Gdy wiêc zmartwychwsta³, przypomnieli

sobie uczniowie Jego, ¿e to powiedzia³, i

uwierzyli Pismu i s³owu, które wyrzek³

Jezus.

Kiedy zaœ przebywa³ w Jerozolimie w

czasie Paschy, w dniu œwi¹tecznym,

wielu uwierzy³o w imiê Jego, widz¹c

znaki, które czyni³. Jezus natomiast nie

zwierza³ siê im, bo dobrze wszystkich

zna³ i nie potrzebowa³ niczyjego

œwiadectwa o cz³owieku. Sam bowiem

wiedzia³, co siê kryje w cz³owieku.

Oto s³owo Pañskie.
