Fire and Division?

What can you say after reading these words? Is this an announcement of a battle for good? Is it a call to change the system? All of this was with us, but in our secular life, in our past. However, we are talking about the fire of Christ and the battle for God, with Christ as our guide, our priority in faith. Saint Paul, in today’s second reading, directs our view toward the Lord Jesus, who is a model for us and who we should imitate during our lives. The Lord Jesus, in order to fulfill the will of the Father, "suffered the cross, regardless of his shame." His life on earth sets the direction for our lives and ac-tions: to serve God and to oppose anything that can distract us from total loyalty to God. The words of today's Gospel shock us at first. The Lord Jesus explains directly that he came to cast fire on the earth. He also says that he did not come to give peace to the earth but to divide it. It is difficult for us to accept and understand this. Fire and division. The element of fire awakes in us fear and terror. We know its destructive power. It leaves rubble and ashes. Division also has negative associations. However, we know that this is not the kind of fire being talked about. The Church's teaching explains to us that this "fire" is a preview of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. It is the "fire" of love that is to ignite and cleanse our hearts. And peace, inner peace - a gift from the Lord Jesus to His disciples, as a sign of harmony between human and God - this gift has not been withdrawn. It is a sign of our adherence to God's will, but it does not free us from fighting, from op-posing everything that in our own interior - like passions, temptations, sins - or in our environment, defies God's will or threatens faith and the fulfillment of God’s commandments. Our task, the task of everyone who wants to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus, is to build a home, a community based on mutual love. However, one should consider the fact that ex. jealousy will live in such a house and it will painfully divide the household. Following Christ, we will often encounter ridicule, mockery, insults and slander. But this is nothing, because we have a noble goal, because when we are with Christ, nothing will threaten us, Christ will strengthen us.

Bullets of jealousy are the worst kind of weapon. They always hit two hearts - the shooter’s and the victim’s. A bitter division arises. It is a burdensome cross, because it requires that one can resist even the dearest person if they interfere with professing faith, fulfilling a calling, or doing God's will.

Ogień i rozłam?

Cóż można powiedzieć po przeczytaniu tych słów? Czy to zapowiedź walki o dobro? Czy wezwanie do zmiany systemu? To już u nas wszystko było, ale w życiu świeckim, w naszej przeszłości. Nam jednak chodzi o ogień Chrystusowy i walkę o Boga, Chrystusa jako naszego przewodnika, nasz priorytet w wierze. Święty Paweł, w drugim czytaniu, kieruje dzisiaj nasze spojrzenie na Pana Jezusa, będącego dla nas wzorem, który mamy w ciągu naszego życia naśladować. Pan Jezus, aby wypełnić wolę Ojca „przecierpiał krzyż, nie bacząc na jego hańbę”. Jego życie na ziemi wyznacza kierunek naszego życia i działania: służyć Bogu i sprzeciwiać się wszystkiemu, co może nas odciągać od całkowitej wierności względem Boga. Słowa dzisiejszej Ewangelii w pierwszej chwili szokują nas. Pan Jezus wyjaśnia, wprost, że przyszedł rzucić ogień na ziemię, mówi także, że nie przyszedł po to, by dać ziemi pokój, lecz rozłam. Trudne to dla nas do przyjęcia i zrozumienia. Ogień i rozłam. Żywioł ognia budzi w nas lęk i przerażenie. Znamy jego niszczycielską moc. Zostawia zgliszcza i popioły. Rozłam budzi także negatywne skojarzenia. Wiemy jednak, że nie o taki ogień tu chodzi. Nauka Kościoła wyjaśnia nam, że ten „ogień” jest zapowiedzią ofiary Chrystusa na krzyżu. To „ogień” miłości, który ma zapalić i oczyścić nasze serca. A pokój, pokój wewnętrzny – dar od Pana Jezusa dla Jego uczniów, jako znak zgody między człowiekiem a Bogiem – ten dar nie został nam cofnięty. Jest on znakiem naszego przylgnięcia do woli Boga, jednak nie uwalnia on nas od walki, od sprzeciwiania się wszystkiemu, co w naszym własnym wnętrzu – jak namiętności, pokusy, grzechy – lub w naszym środowisku, sprzeciwia się woli Boga albo zagraża wierze i wypełnianiu Bożych przykazań. Zadaniem naszym, zadaniem każdego, kto chce być uczniem Pana Jezusa, jest budowa domu, czyli wspólnoty opartej na miłości wzajemnej. Należy się jednak liczyć z tym, że w takim domu zamieszka np. zazdrość i ona boleśnie podzieli domowników. Idąc za Chrystusem, napotykać będziemy nierzadko na drwiny, uśmieszki, wyzwiska i obmowy. Ale to nic, bo cel szczytny, bo gdy będziemy przy Chrystusie, nic nam nie będzie grozić, Chrystus nas umocni.

Pociski zazdrości to najgorszy rodzaj broni. One trafiają zawsze w dwa serca – strzelca i ofiary. Powstaje gorzki rozłam. Jest on krzyżem uciążliwym, bo wymaga tego, aby oprzeć się nawet najdroższej osobie, jeśli ona przeszkadza wyznawać wiarę, wypełniać powołanie, czy też wykonywać wolę Boga.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this past Thursday’s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ’s vic-tory over death. In the tradition of the East, August 15 is the “Dormition of the Theotokos,” or the “Falling Asleep of the God‑bearer.” There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary’s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary’s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary’s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as “my friend,” and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Twentieth Week of Ordinary Time Sunday is the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus says, “I have come to set the earth on fire.” He warns us that the divisions we see, even in our own families, are too often caused by the choices people make about his mission. Tuesday is the Memorial of Saint Bernard, Abbot and Doctor of the Church. Wednesday is the Memorial of Saint Pius X, Pope and Thursday the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saturday is the Feast of Saint Bartholo-mew, Apostle. In the first part of the week, we have readings from the Book of Judges. We read of how Israel worshiped other gods and fell into the power of their enemies; how God called Gideon to be a leader of his tribe; of Gideon's son Abimelech who was unfairly made king and his brother Jotham's response; and of Jephtha's promise to God to sacrifice the first person he saw if only he was victorious in battle. After his victory, Jephtha's only child ran to greet him and he sacrificed her. The Psalm reading for that day reminds us that “Sacrifice or oblation you wished not, but ears open to obedience.” Two days of readings from the Book of Ruth tell the moving story of Naomi and her loving daughter-in-law Ruth. Ruth leaves her own homeland to return with Naomi to Bethlehem, where Ruth remarries and has a child, Obed, who will become the grandfather of the great king, David. Matthew's Gospel this week includes some favorite parables, like the rich young man. Jesus says “it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God,” and we know he is introducing the counter-cultural idea that riches may make it more difficult to be saved. Those are followed by stories of the Master of the vine-yard who leaves us with the phrase “The last will be first and the first, last.” Jesus tells the parable of the landowner who hires workers throughout the day, including the last hours. When he pays them all the same, those who worked all day grumbled. “Are you envious because I am generous?” He offers the parable of the guests who are too busy to attend the wedding feast of the king's son. Friday, Jesus tells us to love our neighbors as our-selves. Saturday, Jesus says, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” On the Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time Jesus cautions us about the difficulty of the Christian life, saying many will be unable to “enter through the narrow gate.” Jesus indicates it is those we do not expect who will be the first in the Kingdom: “Some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

Daily Prayer This Week This week we can be moved by the powerful fidelity of a woman like Ruth. And the familiar gospel stories will guide us through the week most with practical advice and challeng-ing ideas. It is good to begin by recognizing our own issues with God. For many of us, the graces with which we will be asking God to bless us have to do with our freedom from being so inde-pendent. For some of us, it will be to ask to keep our priorities straight this week. It may mean that we let this be a week when we ask what “success” really means for us. It could be a week to try to name more clearly what our purpose, our mission in life is: what the Lord calling us to do with our lives. The real grace of finding intimacy with God in the midst of our busy everyday lives is that is helps keep us focused. When we get really busy, it can be like being on a tread mill. We begin our day in the morning, go where the day takes us and jump off at night. Our desire here is to live with more choice, more freedom. We want to live each day more reflectively. So, if I know the gospel is going to ask me to ponder how the lure of having more and more money can become an impedi-ment to my salvation, or how generous and merciful God is, or how my busyness leads me to forget or lose my priorities, then I can choose to let those reflections shape my week. The way I can do that is by beginning each day with focus. What gives focus is recognizing and naming a desire, a grace or gift I ask of God, for that day, conscious of what I will be experi-encing, what will challenge me, what opportunities will be offered me. What really makes this effective, is to keep talking with Jesus about those desires in the small, quiet moments that are tucked into each day, the “in between times” of the day. The effect is that more and more of the details of our lives are interacting with the Word of God and the desires which God is inspiring in our hearts. As we move toward the weekend, we can prepare to hear Jesus ask us who we say he is - who he is for us. Connecting with Jesus in our daily lives allow him to be-come my Savior and the intimate friend who knows me through and through and is helping me come to know myself with great honesty, integrity, freedom and peace.

LISTEN TO JESUS AND THE PROPHETS Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen. It's easy. Just fill out an intention slip in the back of church and place it in the basket prior to Mass starting. At Offertory time the basket is brought up at each Mass and your intention will be prayed for at all SEVEN Masses on any given weekend. Now that's A LOT OF PRAYERS! The basket is emptied weekly and the same cycle will repeat it-self. So each time you come to church, fill out a slip. Also note that all the names listed on the "Sick List" (posted in four places in the Narthex) are placed in this basket every week. Now for long term prayers, there is a Wishing Well sitting on the counter in the narthex. Just fill out that slip and you will be assigned a person to pray for your particular intention for as long as you want, de-pending on what you write on the slip. Prayer is our communication with God. So let's keep them coming!
