The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The Catholic Church recognizes seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; a listing of these gifts is found in Isaiah 11:2-3. Saint Paul writes of “manifestations of the Spirit” in 1 Corinthians12:7-11, and some of the Protestants use that list to come up with nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, but these are not the same as the ones recognized by the Catholic Church. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are present in their fullness in Jesus Christ, but they are also found in all Christians who are in a state of grace. We receive them when we are infused with sanctifying grace, the life of God within us – as, for example, when we receive a sacrament worthily. We first receive the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Baptism; these gifts are strengthened in the Sacrament of Confirmation, which is one of the reasons why the Catholic Church teaches that Confirmation is properly viewed as the completion of Baptism. As the current Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraph 1831) notes, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit “complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them.” Infused with His gifts, we respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit as if by instinct, the way Christ Himself would. Wisdom is the perfection of faith. Where faith is a simple knowledge of the articles of Christian belief, wisdom goes on to a certain divine penetration of the truths themselves. Wisdom helps us to love the world properly, as the creation of God, rather than for its own sake. Understanding differs from wisdom, the desire to contemplate the things of God, while understanding allows us to penetrate to the very core of revealed truths, helping us to see the world and our life in our special relationship with God. Counsel allows us to judge rightly what we should do in a particular circumstance. It allows us to make such judgments promptly and to be assured that we will act correctly in times of trouble and trial. Fortitude is sometimes called courage, but it is different from what we think of as courage. Fortitude is the virtue that allows us to overcome fear and to remain steady in the face of all obstacles, both physical and spiritual. Knowledge perfects the gift of wisdom in that it helps us to judge wisely in our actions, so that what we do will help to lead us closer to God. Piety, to put it simply, is the desire to do what is pleasing to God. Some people say that this virtue, piety, demands and compels us to do something we do not really want to do. True piety does not do this. It instills in us a desire to do what is pleasing to God. In other words, piety helps us to live our lives as full and complete Christian human beings. Fear of the Lord is the desire not to offend our God. It has nothing to do with being afraid of our God. It is like the respect we have for our parents. We do not wish to offend them and we do not live in fear of them. The desire to please our parents and to please our God, whom we call Father, should remain with us all of our lives.

READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND FIRST READING: ACTS OF THE APOSTLES 2:1-11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in
one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a
strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which
they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which
parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to
speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to
proclaim.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under
heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they
were confused because each one heard them speaking in
his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement they asked,
"Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
Then how does each of us hear them in his native
language?
We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of
Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya
near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews
and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear
them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of
God."
SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 12:3B-7, 12-13
Brothers and sisters:
No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same
Spirit;
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God who
produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given
for some benefit.
As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the
parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also
Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we
were all given to drink of one Spirit. GOSPEL: JOHN 20:19-23
On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, "Peace be with you."
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his
side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you."
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said
to them,
"Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins
you forgive
are forgiven
them,
and whose
sins you
retain are
retained."

Children from 4th grade up are needed to serve at any of our four Masses on the weekend. Servers usually participate in one or two Masses per month, however they can serve more often if they like. All Masses need help! Training is provided. If your child is interested in helping the parish and being an active part of the church, please contact Altar Server Coordinator Paula Kroll at (847) 769-8630 to help schedule a training hour.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Chris-tians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an “eye” in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the “birthday of the church.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PAGE 5 PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018
Seventh Week in Ordinary Time Sunday is the great feast of Pentecost - the birthday of the Church. The formerly frightened Apostles are on fire. Now they can speak clearly, so everyone can understand them. Jesus gives his peace to his disciples and breathes his Spirit upon them, giving them the mission to forgive and sending them to carry out his desire that we all be one. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Monday is the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. The return to “Ordinary Time” doesn't mean we forget about the good news of the Resurrection or the gift of the Spirit Jesus promised us. It simply means that we return to a season of reflecting upon the scriptures with “numbers” (ordinal) until Advent begins on December 2. During the week, we resume reading Mark's Gospel where we left it when Lent began. It offers us stories about sacrific-ing part of ourselves. We hear of the Rich Young Man: “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” At that statement, his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many posses-sions. Peter tells Jesus, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus responds, “there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not receive a hundred times more.” When the disci-ples squabble over who will sit in glory with Jesus, he tells them, “the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Bartimaeus, a blind man recognizes Jesus as “Son of David” and is healed. Bartimaeus follows Jesus. He drives money changers out of the Temple saying, “My house shall be called a house of prayer ... but you have made it a den of thieves.” We end the week with Jesus evading the trickery of the chief priests who ask him “by what authority are you doing these things?” The week closes with Trinity Sunday, which always follows Pentecost. It celebrates the un-knowable relationship between the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit - and their loving support for us in our lives. “When he comes, the Spirit of truth will guide you to all truth...”
Daily Prayer This Week This is a week we can look at letting go -- of riches, honors, pride. In these Ordinary Time days we can hand it all over to Jesus and ask for the trust we need in our lives. We can hand over our fears and jealousy, our titles and our possessions - anything that has become too important in our lives can get in the way of how close we allow ourselves to be with Jesus. As we go through our week, in the smallest moments of the day, we can beg Jesus for the strength of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As we awaken in the morning, and in the everyday moments of our lives, an awareness of our desires before Je-sus can change our attitudes toward these chores and see them as sacred moments of invitation from the God who loves us with such fire and compassion. Letting go, releasing, giving things up: it's a struggle for all of us. Perhaps we can sit for a moment with the rich young man. When he returned to Jesus looking for the easy way out, Jesus “looked at him and loved him” before he said anything else to him. Jesus understands our deepest fears and our motivations. But despite or maybe because of that, he looks at us and loves us, endlessly - not restricted in any way by our own selfishness or unwillingness to change. Dear Lord, you know how filled I am with fears. Let each moment of anxiety today be a reminder to open my life, my heart and my soul to the love and courage you offer me. I know that if only I could trust in you more, it would change my life. “He went away sad, for he had many possessions!” Let me turn these apprehensions over to you. I beg you to give me the wisdom and strength I need to trust more and to fear less. Teach me that it's OK to stop clinging to the fears I have known for so long and that I can embrace the freedom you offer me. Let me be less fear-full and more generous.
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven;
then come, follow me.” - Mark 10

Kathryn Surwillo Honored as "Woman of the Year"
by St. Fabian Women's Club
It is with great pleasure that the St. Fabian Women's Club announces that Kathy Surwillo has been selected as our 2018/19 Woman of the Year for the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. Kathy is one of six children born to Ron and Hazel Jakubczak, number five and the only girl. Most people believe that she was spoiled by both her parents and five brothers; however, her brothers will be the first to tell you that they used to torture her and treat her just like “one of the boys!” Kathy feels she is blessed with two of the best parents any kid could ask for. Her upbringing has helped her become the person she is today. She has held almost every job ever created over her life-time and her most favorites are those where she can help others and be a “caregiver!”
A member of the St. Fabian Women's club for six years, Kathy has also volunteered in many organizations and admits that her favorites have revolved around teaching and helping with retreats. She has taught 6th and 7th grade Religious Education for eight years and has lead the Youth Group for the past four years. These kids ask some tough questions and challenge her patience at times, but truly they have helped her grow in her faith. Kathy has been a part of the RCIA team for the past four years and loves helping others learn about becoming Catholic. Through the Elizabeth Ministry, she has led many retreats and discussion groups with the core team members who are some of her best friends. Her participation in groups like the Catholic/Muslim Dialogue group and Faith Matters have made her a better person. For the past three years, Kathy has been a part of reintroducing Christ Renews His Parish to St. Fabian Parish and this year she is leading a terrific group of women on their first Women’s Retreat sponsored by the parish. She hopes to be a part of developing some sort of faith-based group for both men and women in the future. Kathy and her wonderful husband, John, have two great adult children, Krysta and Greg whom they are extremely proud of. Kathy and John have been St. Fabian parishioners for nine years. She feels as though her Parish is her spiritual home. Born and raised Catholic, Kathy knows that God has always been with her through good times and bad; and that He brought her here to find her faith family. She looks forward to all the wonderful things to come. Kathy is truly worthy of the title, "Woman of the Year"! She is a model to follow and a blessing to our Parish! She will be honored at the ACCW Vicariate V Luncheon on Saturday, June 2nd at Noon at the Mayfield Banquet Hall, 6072 S. Archer Avenue, Chicago. Ticket cost is $32 and may be obtained by contacting Alice at 708-903-9700. To attend call immediately.
Want To Pray For Someone?
It's easy. Just fill out an intention slip in the back of church and place it in the basket prior to Mass starting. At Offertory time the basket is brought up at each Mass and your intention will be prayed for at all SEVEN Masses on any given weekend. Now that's ALOT OF PRAYERS! The basket is emptied weekly and the same cycle will repeat itself. So each time you come to church, fill out a slip. Also note that all the names listed on the "Sick List" (posted in four places in the Narthex) are placed in this basket every week. Now for long term prayers, there is a Wishing Well sitting on the counter in the narthex. Just fill out that slip and you will be assigned a person to pray for your particular intention for as long as you want, depending on what you write on the slip. Prayer is our communication with God. So let's keep them coming!

PIERWSZE CZYTANIE Dz 2,1–11 Wszyscy zostali nape³nieni Duchem Œwiêtym
Oto S³owo Bo¿e.
PSALM RESPONSORYJNY: Ps 104, 1ab i 24ac.29bc–30.31 i 34 Niech zst¹pi Duch Twój i odnowi ziemiê. Gdy odbierasz im oddech, marniej¹ i w proch siê obracaj¹. Stwarzasz je, nape³niaj¹c swym
duchem i odnawiasz oblicze ziemi. Niech chwa³a Pana trwa na wieki, niech Pan siê raduje z dzie³ swoich, Niech mi³a Mu bêdzie pieœñ moja, bêdê radowa³ siê w Panu. Niech zst¹pi Duch Twój i odnowi ziemiê.
Oto S³owo Bo¿e.
SEKWENCJA: Przyb¹dŸ, Duchu Œwiêty, Zeœlij z nieba wziêty Œwiat³a Twego strumieñ. PrzyjdŸ, Ojcze ubogich, PrzyjdŸ, Dawco ³ask drogich, PrzyjdŸ, Œwiat³oœci sumieñ. O, najmilszy z goœci, S³odka serc radoœci, S³odkie orzeŸwienie. W pracy Tyœ och³od¹, W skwarze ¿yw¹ wod¹, W p³aczu utulenie. Œwiat³oœci najœwiêtsza, Serc wierz¹cych wnêtrza Poddaj Twej potêdze. Bez Twojego tchnienia, Có¿ jest wœród stworzenia? Jeno cierñ i nêdze.
Daj Twoim wierz¹cym, W Tobie ufaj¹cym, Siedmiorakie dary. Daj zas³ugê mêstwa, Daj wieniec zwyciêstwa, Daj szczêœcie bez miary.
ŒPIEW PRZED EWANGELI¥:
Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja
PrzyjdŸ, Duchu Œwiêty,
nape³nij serca swoich wiernych
i zapal w nich ogieñ swojej mi³oœci.
Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja
EWANGELIA J 20,19–23 Jezus daje Ducha Œwiêtego
S³owa Ewangelii wed³ug œwiêtego Jana Wieczorem w dniu zmartwychwstania, tam gdzie przebywali uczniowie, drzwi by³y zamkniête z obawy przed ¯ydami. Przyszed³ Jezus, stan¹³ poœrodku, i rzek³ do nich: „Pokój wam!”. A to powiedziawszy, pokaza³ im rêce i bok. Uradowali siê zatem uczniowie, ujrzawszy Pana. A Jezus znowu rzeki do nich: „Pokój wam! Którym odpuœcicie grzechy, s¹ im odpuszczone, a którym zatrzymacie, s¹ im zatrzymane”.
Oto s³owo Pañskie.
