Fourth Sunday of Easter May 7, 2017

MOTHER’S DAY REMEMBRANCES Mother’s Day is May 14th and we have available, once again, Spiri-tual Bouquets for your conven-ience. This beautiful Mother’s Day card set contains a card with a matching envelope and an offering envelope for the parish. If you are

interested in honoring a special Mother in your life, (deceased or living - and yes, expectant, foster and mother figures are moms too!) these Gift Sets are available in church and at the parish office. Take a gift set, keep the card and envelope for your use and return the offering envelope, filled out with the name of the honoree and your donation, by either dropping it in the collection basket, or dropping it off at the office. The honoree can be anybody you want to honor for Mother’s Day - Mom, wife, grandmother, mother-in-law, Godmother, sister, aunt, daughter, friend etc. These envelopes will then be placed on the altar during all of our Mother’s Day Masses. We will do the same for Father’s Day.

FIRST COMMUNION CLASS

Please keep our Second Graders in your prayers this weekend as they make their First Holy Com-munion. May god watch over them always and may they always be as close to Him as they are on Sun-day. God bless you all AND your teachers!

Recycling Program Don’t forget to bring your aluminum cans from graduation parties and other events to Siena Hall. We have raised $273.04 with the last batch which will be matched by the owner of the recycling plant for a generous donation to St. Jude’s Hospital! We truly ARE making a difference as we work together

UPCOMING EVENTS

Gift Bearers at Mass If you have requested the intention for a Mass and would like to participate by taking the gifts up to the altar at the Offertory, please see an usher when you come into Mass so they won’t ask for other volunteers. Thank you.

Lost and Found Did you know we have a “lost and found” at St. Catherine’s? The table on the same side as the sacristy has a basket on the bottom full of things that have been left behind. We have asked that you please check to see if anything belongs to you. As that hasn’t remedied the situation, the new practice will be to empty the basket at the end of each month.

Keep Our Grounds Beautiful! Just a reminder that we should all work together to keep our grounds beautiful. There are trash receptacles for garbage as well as cigarette butts. Please use them! Also, there is to be NO PARKING on the grass. The hills in the small lot are not parking spaces. Our maintenance man works hard to keep things beautiful. Let’s respect that. Thank you.

“Beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul.”

CATHOLICISM: THE PIVOTAL PLAYERS This is a 6 week series presented by Fr. Richard Jones in St. Joseph Church, Coraopolis from 6:45 PM till 8:00PM. Come join us on our Journey through the Pivotal Players. With The Pivotal Play-ers, Bishop Barron gives a portrait of six people who dared to walk the walk and, in their own way, set the world on fire. Monday, May 8, 2017—St. Francis The Reformer Monday, May 15, 2017—St. Thomas Aquinas The Theologian

Monday, May 22, 2017— Blessed John Henry New man The Convert Tuesday May 30, 2017—St. Catherine of Siena The Mystic Monday, June 5, 2017—G. K. Chesterton The Evangelist Monday, June 12, 2017—Michelangelo The Artist

The ultimate goal of the films is to bring people closer to Christ. Bishop Barron makes this clear by stating that the saints and other holy men and women are, above all, representatives of Christ whose lives act as an invitation to greater commun-ion with Christ and his Church. This is no boring his-tory lesson!

Come join us as we learn from the Pivotal Players in the hope that we may become one of them! Based on the Study Program –Catholicism: The Piv-otal Players by Bishop Robert E. Barron

St. Catherine of Siena, Pray For Us!

World Day of Prayer for Vocations In our politically charged soci-ety, I imagine many have heard the quote, "It takes a village..." Whether or not one likes the politics of the author of that quote, in the words are truth. It takes many people to create and sustain a community.

For those of us who are Catholic, we believe in the power of vocations to help spread the Gospel mes-sage. And vocations are an important part of the community. The vocations to priesthood, or the dea-conate, or religious life are at the center of our ef-forts to spread the good news. However, we need to also speak about the vocation of married life as ser-vice to the church; and furthermore, the vocation of single life. It is at our baptism that we are given the mandate to spread the Gospel through our vocation in the church.

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me" (Rv 3:20).

We hear in Scripture that Jesus stands at the door of our heart and knocks. He only invites and never de-mands or breaks into our lives without our accep-tance. He knocks, we open the door, and the invita-tion and welcome are complete.

Let us pray... God of the invitation, you knock upon the door of everyone's heart. We seek the courage to open that door, for we know the responsibility of saying yes. We humbly ask you for your wisdom to serve your church with compassion and acceptance. We believe that when we say yes, you will provide the grace for the work ahead. Give grace to those men and women who have dedicated their lives to constant service to your church. Also give grace to those couples and single men and women who work for the church in their secular lives. We ask all this through Christ our Lord and brother, who live and reign with you and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

"How long has Jesus been knocking at the door of your heart, waiting to enter?" -St. John Baptist de la Salle

Fourth Sunday of Easter May 7, 2017

“He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake .”

I had intended this week's Pastor's Corner to be a meditation reflecting about my 44th anniversary of ordination on May 5 and give some stats about my classmates. I had made notes and planned to de-velop them this week into a "2-parter." However, I had placed the notes somewhere on my desk, and now I can't find them. Some people use the alphabet as a filing system. Some categorize by topic. I use what is known as the archeological method of filing: the older stuff is on the bottom, the new stuff gets tossed on top. My desk usually looks like the after-math of a pinpoint mini-tornado. Most times, I can locate what I need rather quickly; other times, like now, things I need migrate to the Bermuda Triangle or some such mysterious never-never land

However, instead of feeling bad about the condition of my desk, I read an article in the PG Business sec-tion that rather makes me proud, and in fact ties in with part of what I had wished to write about the life of a priest in these times

Although I am sure that Jesus, Peter, and many cen-turies of apostolic successors and clerics never envi-sioned it, a Pastor today is a CEO of what would qualify as a medium size business. Between the two parishes, I am the "boss" of more than 20 employ-ees and run a gross budget of over $1,000,000 per year. In all respects (except my salary!) I am an ex-ecutive. No seminary courses ever prepared us for that role; none of us really contemplated or imagined it; I don't think we like it. But it is the reality

Now for the article: a comparative study was done between bosses who have messy desks vs. those who keep neat desks. The stocks of messy bosses rose an average of 3.5 points last year, while the stocks of the neat ones fell 1 point. Three times as many messy bosses were inclined to give Christmas bonuses than neat bosses. 71% of bosses with sloppy desks are in favor of affirmative action, while only 21% of bosses with clean desks are. Bosses who are slobs struck out on their own by leaving home a full three years sooner than those who are tidy. And while more than half of the slovenly execu-

The Pastor’s Corner

Father Lou Vallone

tives described themselves as popular in high school, less than one in five of the meticulous ones

thought they were well liked in their adolescence

In short, the type of chief whose desk is a clutter can be characterized as more independent, more adven-turous, more generous, more forward looking, more likable and more effective than his counterpart whose desk is always in perfect array. That's not a bad set of adjectives for a priest who is forced to be a CEO, is it? Even if he can't find his notes to write

his Pastor's Corner because of his messy desk.

A Family Perspective…………….by Bud Ozar In today’s gospel Jesus tells us, HE IS THE WAY

and warns anyone who offers “another way” to hap-

piness is “a thief and a bandit.” Strong words! Don’t

listen to the sales pitch of society for happiness.

Look to yourself where God is present and “calls you

by name and leads you to abundant life.”

Marriage Moments………...….by Susan Vogt

The couple that shops together– may learn some-thing. Many women enjoy shopping as an “experience” while many men shop with a “hunter” mentality (get what you need as quickly as you can.) Although these are stereotypes and not always true, shopping together can often be frustrating. Just once try shopping as a date. Enter into your beloved’s world and learn something new about them.

Parenting Pointers…………....by Susan Vogt \”The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” (1 Peter 2:7) Do you or your child ever feel rejected? Sooner or later everyone has this experience. It doesn’t feel food but it’s not the end of the world. When appropriate, share with your child a time that you felt rejected and how you grew from it.
