FROM THE PASTOR ADVENT IS QUICK THIS YEAR—We only have three full weeks of Advent this year since the Fourth Sunday of Advent is on December 24. The fourth week of Advent is only one day. One of my Advent customs is to plant nar-cissus bulbs at the beginning of Advent and watch them grow which helps me be patient during this season. Please pray for our parish that we will be ready when Jesus comes again as we prepare to celebrate his birth at Christ-mas. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart.
LAS POSADAS Las Posadas is an Advent tradition that was brought to Mexico from Spain by Catholic Missionaries in the 1500’s. It is a nine day traveling novena that commemo-rates Mary and Joseph’s journey in search of shelter on the night baby Jesus was born. Posada is the Spanish word for inn or lodging. The song known in Spanish as "Canto Para Pedir Posada" is a vital part of the tradition. The title means "song to ask for shelter," and it recreates an imag-ined conversation between Joseph and an innkeeper in which Joseph explains that he and his wife need a place to stay for the night and the innkeeper initially refuses. We will celebrate a modified Posada in the church on Sunday, December 17th, beginning at 9:30 AM (after the 8:30AM Mass) and end with Coffee Hour & Piñatas in the narthex.
SIMBANG GABI Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Catholic tradition of preparing for Christmas. It includes a novena (nine days) of Masses that ends with Christmas. Simbang Gabi means “church in the night” since Filipinos would go to Mass early before going to work; they would carry parols (star lanterns) to guide their way. These Masses came to be known as Misa de Gallo (“Mass of the Rooster”) because they were cele-brated at dawn. The Masses were festive celebrations with Christmas carols sung before the Mass, catechesis, faith sharing, and lots of food afterward. We will celebrate Simbang Gabi at the 5 pm Mass next Saturday, December 16; our parish parol will be carried in the entrance procession and will be blessed at the begin-ning of Mass; we will have some Filipino music and the second reading will be proclaimed in Tagalog. There will be Filipino food after Mass.
FLOWER DONATIONS Thanks to Matthew, Hailey and Allison Bach for donating flowers for the Immaculate Conception feast day this past week. You can donate money for Christmas flowers by using your Christmas Flower envelope found in your De-cember envelope packet.
FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE On Tuesday, December 12, we will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. “The story of the origins of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is well known. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin was a quiet, humble man, a poor peasant. When the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him and asked him to tell the local bishop to build a church in her honor, Juan Diego became a very reluctant messenger. The bishop would not believe him. So Mary filled Juan Diego’s til-ma, or cloak, with roses in December, and when he emp-tied out these beautiful flowers at the bishop’s feet, there, imprinted on his tilma, was a wonderful image of the Virgin, dressed like a young Aztec woman.” (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 20) We will have Mass at 9 AM on Tuesday; our parish school students and staff will attend. Some of the 6th graders will reenact the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe after Mass. ADVENT COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE
During Advent we hear the cry of John the Baptist, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:2). For us today this is an invitation to take stock of our lives and see what we need to ask God to forgive us for. Our parish Communal Advent Penance Service will be Wednesday, December 13, at 7 PM, with the opportunity for individual confession. St. Louise Parish will have a Communal Penance Service on Thursday, December 14, at 10 AM, and St. Madeleine Sophie Parish will have their Advent Communal Penance Service on Thursday, December 14, at 7 PM. We also have individual confes-sion available on Wednesday morning, 8:00-8:45 AM and on Saturday afternoon, 3:00-4:30 PM in the Recon-ciliation Chapel.
ADORATION AND BENEDICTION ON FRIDAY
We will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament after the 8:45 AM Mass on Friday, December 15, until 11:15 when we will have Benediction. Please come to spend some time in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord on Friday as we continue to prepare for his coming.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE
We will celebrate the 4th Sunday of Advent at the 5PM Mass on December 23rd and the 8:30AM and 11:00AM Masses on December 24th. The first Christmas Mass on December 24th will be at 4:00 PM (Children’s Choir – Anthems and Carols at 3:30 PM), followed by the 8:00 PM Mass (Sacred Heart Chorale - Anthems & Car-ols at 7:15 PM). Masses on Christmas Day will be at 8:30 AM (Cantor—Prelude at 8:15 AM) and 11:00 AM (Sacred Heart Chorale - Anthems & Carols at 10:30am).

HOLIDAYS ARE FOR GIVING AND FORGIVING
Forgiveness is a free gift. Since division is such a painful condition, what keeps us from pursuing the healing path of reconciliation? The reason most often given for holding a grudge is that the person who has caused offense does not “deserve” to be forgiven. We often see forgiveness as a reward for doing the right thing, such as saying one is sorry, changing the hurtful behavior, or showing appropri-ate regret for the harm done. Doing these things would certainly be signs of a complete reconciliation between two people, and is highly desirable.
But the deeper reason for offering forgiveness is that we have received it first. God is the number one giver of this totally unearned gift, and as beneficiaries we are in a posi-tion to share it freely. Since forgiveness comes from God, it does not depend on our actions or attitudes. Forgiveness is a “discovery” of what God has already placed at our disposal. This discovery is worth making because none of us is in a position to live without it. Without a God willing to take us just as we are, what chance would any of us have? Tis the season to acknowledge the gift, and put it to good use.

HOW HOLIDAY TRADITIONS HELP HEAL YOUR GRIEF
At Christmas cherish their generosity. If you were to ask a group of people to name their favorite Christmas gift ever, which ones would answer with the name of a person? Those who had recently lost a loved one would surely do so. The old saying, “you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone” comes home with force on this treasured but diffi-cult day. There is no easy way through Christmas when grief is fresh. But even at our most wounded, as the gifts are passed around the room we can make space in our hurting heart to cherish our loved one’s generosity. Instead of making a list for Santa this year, how about listing examples of your loved one’s giving spirit and passing that around with the gifts? How about the time he helped repave the church parking lot or when he helped repair a ramshackle house for a struggling family? And the time she spent tutoring a young girl struggling with geometry class or visited a perfect stranger who was alone at the holidays in a nursing home. Rest assured, when you share this kind of list, all in the room with you will feel it as a gift. This year, make room in your calendar to honor the wonderful qualities your loved one shared with you. They are a rare treasure that will bring comfort and healing to your sadness and grief.

Likewise, contributions for 2018 must be received in January. If you are behind in your stewardship of treasure com-mitment for 2017, please make every effort to bring your giving up to date. The programs, services and outreach offered by our parish as well as the maintenance and repair of our parish campus depends entirely upon your consistent contributions. Thank you for return-ing to the parish, the poor and other charities a part of the many gifts God has bestowed on you. May God bless you in the new year.
YEAR-END GIVING—A PLANNED GIFT Successful people are often asked how they thrive. What did they do differently than others? One of the secrets they share is the importance of practicing good stewardship. As stewards of the many gifts God has given us, we can give wisely to support the mission of the Catholic Church in Western Washington. When many people think of charitable giving, especially at year’s end, they think of making a cash gift. However, there is another way. It’s call a planned gift. There are many ways a planned gift can bring benefits back to you while also benefitting your parish community:
•A charitable gift annuity that pays you fixed income for life at a rate based on your age; •A gift of real estate that offers tax and income advantages; and •A gift of stock that help you avoid capital gains tax.
Many of these benefits can be achieved with a surprisingly modest gift. There are variations on each of these gift options. The Archdiocesan Planned Giving Office is pleased to provide information to you and your advisors as you consider making year-end gifts. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE UPDATE If you have not yet done so, please return your Stewardship of Treasure Commitment Card for 2018 to the parish office right away! You can put it in the offering basket at Mass or put it in the mail using the return envelope provided. You can also go to the par-ish website, sacredheart.org, and complete and submit a commitment card online.
So far, 483 parish households have returned a card. The average pledge is $39.95 per week, an 11% increase over the average weekly pledge for 2017. But we still have a ways to go! We need to hear from every parish household!
Thank you to all those who have returned a card and especially to those who “took a step” in their giving percentage goal! May God continue to bless you for your faithful response to His generosity.
