In a few weeks we begin our teaching of the faith for adults. Each year Sacred Heart Parish offers ‘faith instructions’ for adults. Some people are seeking to make their sacraments, Confirmation and/or Baptism; other people are inquiring about faith in God and have not made decision to be baptized; still other people seek instruction in our Catholic faith.

As parish members we need you to do the out-reach. Have you had conversations in your families and acquaintances about the Catholic faith? Or perhaps you have been attending Mass and are considering becoming Catholic? What-ever the situation, please consider joining us. We begin instructions in a few weeks.

At the present time, I have spoken with six different adults who are interested in taking ‘faith instructions’ in the coming year. Please join us. Give me a call at the rectory (617-325-3322) or email me at [email protected]

OPERATION BACKPACK St. Vincent de Paul has a special request that we would like to ask you - our fellow parishioners - for help with. We are being asked to help with the purchase of 30 backpacks for children in our school that need them to transport and protect the tablets they are using for school work. Each backpack costs approximately $45. These will be used during the school year by those in need. So we are asking our parishioners that are able, to ‘sponsor a backpack’ and contribute $45 to St. Vincent de Paul. Or sponsor 1/2 of a backpack. Registration is now open for 2016-2017 Religious Education Classes. All classes take place at Sacred Heart School on Canterbury St. First Communion

Preparation is a two- year program beginning in first grade. Instruction continues in the Sunday morning program through 8th grade.

Confirmation preparation is a two- year program starting in grade 9. These classes meet on Sunday evenings.

If your child was not baptized at Sacred Heart parish, please provide a copy of the baptismal certificate when you register. Please contact the rectory office for registration forms and more information.

Pregnancy Help is a pregnancy resource center sponsored

by the Archdiocese of Boston to provide alternatives to abortion. Trained and caring nurses and case workers are available to assist any woman experiencing a difficult preg-nancy. Being Humble and Kind

Today, just as in Jesus’ day, so much emphasis in soci-ety is based on status. power and fame. In this gospel when Jesus says: “For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalt-ed” Jesus is teaching us the importance of being humble. People who exalt themselves are often very boastful, arro-gant, self-centered and in need of recognition from others. People who are humble look beyond themselves and use their talents and skills to benefit others. They do not put on false airs or do things to look for recognition from oth-ers. Humble people are grateful to God for the blessings that He has bestowed upon them and they live a life of service to others. Jesus is teaching us that by our humility and service to others, we will be exalted by God and share our reward in Heaven.

When I read Jesus’ advice to the host to “invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind: blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you”, I immedi-ately thought of the motto “Keep Kindness in Your Heart” that my children learned years ago at Sacred Heart School. Being kind to others without expecting anything in return benefits us as well as the recipients. There are so many ways of showing kindness to others. Daily we can show kindness towards others by giving up a seat on a bus, hold-ing a door open, giving compliments, etc. We can give of our time to volunteer at food pantries, homeless shelters, hospitals, etc. Doing things from the goodness of our hearts becomes a way of life for us. We are living like Jesus taught us.

Through this gospel Jesus is teaching us to be humble and kind. We can be role models for others. All of us can think of people who have influenced us through their humility and kindness. One person who comes to my mind is the late Sis-ter Raynald. I first met Sister when I was a student at Sacred Heart School. Through the forty plus years that I knew her she was a shining example of always being humble and kind. Through her work at the school and the church she touched so many lives. Let us all follow the examples of Jesus and Sister Raynald and live a life of humility and kindness.
