Luke makes it clear that Mary is a virgin. The opening words of the angel form the beginning of what was to become the ‘Hail Mary’. The message is that Mary will have a child. All the hopes and thoughts of the Messiah are summed up in the words of the angel. The child will be called Jesus, a name that means ‘God is salvation’. He is described as ‘great’, an adjective normally reserved for God in the Old Testament. His title will be ‘Son of the Most High’, an alternative term for ‘Son of God’. Like his ancestor David, he will rule over Israel for ever. When Mary pointed out that she could not conceive as she was an unmarried woman, the angel's answer forms the foundation of the teaching of the Virgin Birth. Her conception was to be brought about by the creative power of God and as a result of this the child would be called ‘Son of God’. Mary accepted the message with complete trust and obedience. She was prepared to trust God and the story comes to a close with the simple words of acceptance of her position as a servant of God. With thanks, Finance Committee.
Lighting of the Advent Wreath – Candle Four Celebrant: He will feed his flock with the power of the Lord,
With the majesty of the name of his God. Deacon: They will live secure, to the ends of the lands,
He himself shall be peace. The Fourth Candle on the Wreath is lit.
ALL: COME THOU LONG EXPECTED JESUS, COME LIGHT OF THE WORLD, BRING US PEACE.
The Gospel today is taken from Luke 1:26-38
In the story of the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel is sent to Mary.

Unite against coronavirus
As we cope with coronavirus in the UK, we think of our sisters and brothers in developing countries who are facing this pandemic with fragile health systems, some of which have almost no intensive care beds or ventilators.
Food prices have already risen with borders closing, the poorest are losing their jobs and income with wholesale shutdowns. Furthermore, inadequate healthcare, lack of access to washing facilities and limited ability to social distance will result in loss of life on an intolerable scale. The likely impact will be devastating.
We are one global family. Please will you sign the CAFOD petition to ask the government to work with other world leaders to help the most vulnerable people in our world to cope with this crisis.
To sign the petition visit cavod.orkg.uk/coronaviruscampaign

The O Antiphons are used as the introduction and conclusion to the Magnificat at Evening Prayer and as the text of the Gospel Acclamation during the final days of Advent, 17 to 23 December. The importance of O Antiphons is twofold: each one highlights a title of the Messiah: 0 Sapientia (0 Wisdom), 0 Adonai (0 Lord), 0 Radix Jesse (0 Root of Jesse), 0 Clavis David (0 Key of David),0 Oriens (0 Rising Sun), 0 Rex Gentium (0 King of the Nations), and 0 Emmanuel; also, each one refers to the prophecy of Isaiah looking forward to the coming of the Messiah. Monday 21 December O Rising Sun, you are the splendour of eternal light and the sun of justice. 0 come
and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. Tuesday 22 December O King whom all the peoples desire, you are the cornerstone which makes all one.
O come and save man whom you made from clay. Wednesday 23 December O Emmanuel, you are our king and judge, the one whom the peoples await and
their Saviour. O come and save us, Lord, our God. Adapted from https://www.rcsouthwark.co.uk
The latest draw took place on 13 December and the lucky winners were First. David Linda, Second. Don Perrett Third. Kate Mansford and Fourth. Martin Stynes
