From the Pastor's Pen: I believe in the.... Church As we continue to reflect on the Creed during this year of faith, in lent and more so in the period when the Cardinals are
embarking on the exercise, of choosing a vicar of Christ, makes our theme that we find in the last part of the Creed
coming into play with a lot of meaning.
When we profess that I BELIEVE IN (One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic) CHURCH, do we understand what we are saying?
First of all the CHURCH; is not a building, a place, or Bishops, Priest and Deacons as we may misunderstand it, but it is
the Body of Christ made up of the people of God. This shows the intimate bond between Jesus and His Church. We, the
members of the Church, form His living body. And so, we are the Church.
The Church is both visible and invisible. The visible Church is the pilgrim/Militant Church on earth and the invisible
Church is the Church Triumphant in heaven, "the heavenly Jerusalem . . . innumerable angels in festal gathering . . . the
assembly of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven" (Heb. 12:22-23.)
After professing our faith in God, who is The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit, the Creed now moves to the
definition of what we believe as a Church.
When His visible presence was taken from the apostles, Jesus did not leave them orphans. He promised to remain with
them until the end of time and He sent them His Spirit to begin the work of His Church. We find this recorded in the
Gospel of Matthew. Jesus said, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, ......” (Matthew 16:18-19.)
Jesus made Peter the “rock” on which He would build His Church. And, from that time on, Peter, and his successors,
would be recognized as the Head and Shepherds of the Church.
Baptism is the main entrance into the Church. By its sacramental character, it incorporates one into the Main Body of
Christ, the Church. That is why even those who have passed, are still members of Christ’s Body.
The Church of Christ, which in the Creed we profess to be One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic, is made of these four
characteristics, inseparably linked with each other, which indicates the essential features of the Church and her mission.
The Church does not possess them of herself; it is Christ who, through the Holy Spirit, makes his Church one, holy,
catholic, and apostolic, and it is He who calls her to realize each of these qualities as we will fully reflect on them next
weekend.
Lastly, the Pope is very important as the Vicar of Christ, the successor of the seat of Peter and the Servant of servants in
the existence and ordering the Church. Therefore, let us continue to pray for the Bishops who are in the process of
choosing the Pope, to be guided by the Holy Spirit in this exercise.

Upper Room Workshop Benefits from
Annual Diocesan Appeal
In December of 2012, the Office of Catholic Education and
Christian Formation held an Upper Room retreat/workshop
for new, volunteer and emerging catechetical leaders in
Wintergreen near Charlottesville. This opportunity was
designed to provide participants with an opportunity for
reflecting on their personal, as well as ecclesial, call to
ministry; and to offer time for prayer. Presentations
included: Theology of Ministry, Theology of Leadership in
Community, Reign of God Virtues, What is Catechesis,
Empowering Volunteers, Developing your Leadership Skills
and Dignity of Volunteer Ministry.
In total, 26 people attended in addition to 4 staff members.
The normal price for each participant was $170/person, but
because of support from the Annual Diocesan Appeal, the
cost to each participant was only $50/person. This cost
included the overnight stay, 3 meals and the
retreat/workshop.
The next Upper Room retreat/workshop is August 16-17 in
Wintergreen. Registration opens in March. The cost will
once again be $50/person because of the subsidy provided
through the Annual Diocesan Appeal.

A Simple Provision Leads to Immeasurable Impact One of the most unique and impactful ways of ensuring the
future of Parish Name is through a legacy gift. A legacy gift
can take many forms such as a simple bequest as a part of
your estate plans and can be of great benefit in helping fulfill
your personal financial objectives. Creating a provision in
your will is simple and easy to do, as the following sample
provision demonstrates.
Sample Bequest Language I give, devise, and bequeath to (Parish Name, Parish City, State)
the sum of $_____ (or) ______percent (%) of the rest,
residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal,
for the following purposes (if any):
We recognize that your bequest intentions are a personal
matter that you may wish to keep confidential. However, if
you are willing to share them, we would like to acknowledge
your intentions both at the parish level and through the newly
created 1820 Circle. If you are interested in more
information or would like to let us know of plans already in
motion, please contact Parish Contact Name, Phone, Email.
The Diocese also has an extensive website with more
information on the 1820 Circle as well as the different ways
you can create a legacy gift. We encourage you to visit the
site at www.richmonddiocese.org/plannedgiving.
This announcement is for educational purposes only and not
considered professional financial or legal advice. Benefits will vary depending on various factors. An important part of making a planned gift is consultation with your own professional legal and
financial advisors to determine the best vehicle to fit your needs.

Who Can Vote? • Only cardinals can elect a pope. The number of cardinals cannot exceed 120. Cardinals who are over the age of eighty may participate in the conclave's preparatory meetings, but are not allowed to cast a vote. • Cardinals who cannot attend the conclave due to illness or other reasons can still vote. Special arrangements are made for those cardinals.
How Does the Election Take Place? • After the cardinals have taken their oath, paper ballots with the words Eligo in Summum Pontifacem ("I elect as Supreme Pontiff") are distributed. The cardinals write the name of the candidate they are voting for and fold the ballot twice. • One by one, each cardinal carries his ballot to the altar, where there is a chalice covered by a paten. He holds his ballot up so everyone can see that he has voted. As he places his ballot on the paten and slides it into the chalice, he says, "I call as my witness Christ the Lord who will be my judge that my vote is given to the one who before God I think should be elected." • After all of the ballots have been collected, the cardinal camerlengo and three assistants, called scrutineers, count them.
How Are the Votes Counted? • The first scrutineer silently reads the ballot, notes the name of the person chosen, and passes it to the second scrutineer. He in turn does the same and passes it to the third scrutineer. The third scrutineer reads the name aloud for all to hear, writes the name on a separate sheet of paper prepared for that purpose, and then runs a needle and thread through the ballot. After all the ballots have been joined together in this way, they are then placed in another receptacle or on one side of the table. • When all the votes have been read, the three scrutineers tally them. If no one receives a two-thirds majority, a pope has not been elected, and a new vote must be taken. If someone does receive a two-thirds majority, then there is a new pope. • After the votes have been tallied, any notes the cardinals have made are collected and placed with the ballots, which are burned by the scrutineers. If a new pope has been elected, the papers are burned, giving off white smoke. If no one has been elected, the papers are burned with an additive that gives off black smoke. This lets the crowds waiting and watching outside know the progress of the election.
What Happens When a New Pope Is Elected? • The dean of the college of cardinals, or the most senior cardinal, asks the elected cardinal if he accepts his election and what name he would like to be called as Pope. If the elected cardinal assents, he immediately becomes the bishop of Rome, or Pope. • All the cardinals pledge their obedience to the new Pope. • The dean of the college of cardinals announces from the balcony of the Vatican that a new pope has been elected and proclaims his name. The new Pope then steps onto the balcony and gives the Apostolic Blessing.
