Welcome to the Autumn edition of The Cheadle magazine ‘College Life’. Our intention is to capture some of

the exciting events that happen at the Cheadle College and to celebrate the achievements of ������������������ �

Even before the start of term the college was proud to announce its best set of examination results which prepared our students for life beyond Cheadle and Marple. In the summer we received news that the college had been voted runner up as the best provider of BETEC courses in the country. An award �������������������������������������but also the enthusiasm and dedication of the �����������

�������������������������������������������caring and supportive college the new ‘House’ system was launched in September. House names derived from the long and distinguished �������������������������������������������������������������������������������������!��"�����������#��$���#����!��

#�������������������������������� �����of the activities found within these pages are �����%�������������������&��������#��������#������ ����������"�����������������events.

I am sure you’ll agree with me that The Cheadle College is an exciting place to learn.

All Wrapped

A fantastic fundraising event took place where students raised over £3100.00 in a 10 mile sponsored walk in association with the Royal Air Force.

(���(������)�������'�����(#�������#�'*+��������*����������������"�����������������������wrap on behalf of the Manchester Children’s Hospital and Liverpool’s Alder Hey Hospital as part of the ‘Santa Drop Appeal’.

Since it’s conception in 2014 this fundraising event has snowballed in size and surpassed last year’s £900.00 raised.

Congratulations, you’ve just have won an i-Pad!

Principal Jenny Singleton presents prize-winner Serena Ridley with an iPad following the Capital Radio and media studies collaboration/competition at Cheadle Open Day on October 3rd. Serena is in Year 11 at Poynton High School and has applied to the college.

Children in Need 2015 college events began on Thursday 12 November with the CPP Choices group from Marple going on a sponsored ramble in Etherow Park. They had been training with local walks and on the day the sun shone as they went in groups around the park. Each student had a target challenge – and everyone achieved their goals which was fantastic.Very well done to everyone who took part. We are still collecting sponsor money but we hope we will have raised nearly £500!

Media City, Salford Manchester

Creative Media students visited the BBC studios at Media City in Salford�������������������������"��������������������������������������������������������������������"������������������������>����������������������� ��

The largest television studio in Europe was particularly impressive. They also gained a valuable insight into the caption of sound for ��"������������������������_������]���������#����������������������������������impressed by.

Having direct access to recording the news and ����������������������������������������������������Question of Sport and Radio 6.

The BBC tour guides were very informative and students felt comfortable asking them questions. The �����������������"���������"��"��"���������media organisation and its impressive Media City ��������������������"���������������#���������their current media assignments.

Stockport Young Apprentice Award

Business students from the local schools and colleges were invited to take part in ‘The Young Apprentice’ again this year.

Students are given a task to ��#�������������������������year it was based on a Christmas ��������������������������������#��������������������������������������������������� �

The team from Cheadle College were outstanding and lead by ������������������*#����������������������������������#��������������!���������away from the positive contributes of j�#��{������8��"��+�������7��!�Dodwell.

The whole team’s involvement in the process was fantastic and I would like to thank each and every one of ��#��������

This is the second year on the run that The Cheadle College has won this competition and we are delighted to have been involved and rewarded with a cheque for £1000.

Business Finalists

Finalists: Rebecca Leech, Georgia Winters, Alyssa Rowbotham, Sam Cowley, Michael Valentine and Harry Downey

On Tuesday 1 December a group of twelve AAT and Business Administration students competed in the North West heat of the National ICAEW BASE competition.

The College entered two groups who were AAT level 3 and level 4 full time students and Apprentices and one business administration apprentice. They were competing against 18 teams and had two hours to complete the business challenge.

They were given a case study to analyse and prepare a presentation. The judges were observing group ���!����!�������������#�!������time management whilst they were analysing the data and preparing their presentation. The teams

then had to present their business recommendations to a panel of directors who asked them very challenging questions.

Of the eighteen teams who took part the judges selected four teams to go ��������������~�����������������then did their presentation again. The judges chose a runner up and ~���������#�������������������������������������~������7� �)��standard of all the competitors was very high.

We are very proud that one of our two groups were selected for ���~���������������*������'�������#��*���Q����'�����Q�����+)Q�Q����(�#��������*���Q������������������*���Q����

&�����������+)Q�Q������=������,������*���Q�� ��

The winner was Manchester Grammar and the runner up Bury Grammar.

We are really proud of our students ����������#���~���X���������professional throughout.

Tutor Sue Howgego did a brilliant job of preparing the students for the challenge and co-ordinating the visit with ICAEW and a big thank you to Joanne Tyler who covered Sue’s class whilst she attended the event.

Our recently opened Media Centre at Cheadle has just taken delivery of a suite of 25 pristine new ��������������##����������������#������Creative Media BTEC students now enrolled at College.

This new exciting industry standard kit will enable the students to gain invaluable experience of how real media organisations create their work; whether ����������>���������������������������+��������� Gaming or Final Cut Pro for video.

)��!����#������������������������"������������such as The Manchester International Festival or video producers and they all state a preference for Macs.

Due to the collaborative work now being done in ��������#����������������������#����������X������������������������~�����#��������"���of the Macs. AS and A2 Media Studies students can complete their coursework; which requires ��#����������������������������"�#��������~�#�marketing campaigns.

Photography students can develop their portfolios ������X������!���������~�#������������"����their video production skills.

5���������������������������������������������������plans to introduce more specialist BTEC courses in Animation and Film and Television.

This can only enhance our students learning experience and the future of Creative Media at The Cheadle College

RECORD BREAKING RESULTS!Students at The Cheadle College and Marple Sixth Form College celebrate another ������������������� �)���������*�Q"�������*�"�������������������~������results have maintained the upward trend of success and achievement for the past ~"����������������� �+��������������������"����������������"���������courses or 3 or more.*��"������*�����* A level achievement of over 98% and with 39 subjects across both colleges recording 100% pass ����������������~�����������������#��������~��������������������������"#�����)@��"������������������~�#����������]��������������������������������������������������������)@����������������������)��������������and Marple Sixth Form College were voted as the second best BTEC provider in the country from over 800 schools and colleges.

����"������"��������������������������������������������������������������#�����"���"��������������������������������������������after employment opportunities.

Congratulations in particular to the following students who were absolutely delighted to have not only achieved

It’s a double celebration for Chris Leckey who not only �����*�**����������������������������������������today.

������������#��&�%��=��"�&����(������������has a place at the University of Manchester to study Classics.

“Absolutely delighted with the College’s A Level and Vocational results.”

The Colleges’ vocational students have also performed exceptionally well. Both Daishawn Honohan from Moss (������7����+����������#��������=��&����(����������������"������������)@��(��������������������������Q�"������7���������j�"���������study a degree in Sports and Exercise Science. Not only is Daishawn a Great Britain Judo international but he is currently following a new sporting direction in *#�����+�����������������������������������������Merseyside Nighthawks.

He has secured a sports scholarship at from the university and is in line to be the recipient of the Vice Chancellor’s Award .

�������������������������������&�������������a former Kingsway High School student who again ����"�������� �(�������������������������������done brilliantly to gain a prestigous football scholarship �����������j(*

*��#��!������������������"�����������&�����and Social Care including William Dawson from Heaton Moor who has secured a university placement for �������������������#�����"����������������������old students.

&��"�����������������������������������������������������#����#� ��*���������������(�������=�����������#��'����������&����(��������������������"��������������)@��)��"��and Tourism and is already working for Swissport at ��������*����������������#�������������� excellent links.

��##��������������]����������7��(�������>����������������@�����"�������“I am absolutely delighted with the College’s A Level and Vocational results.

With 53 students achieving either a triple Distinction* or 3 or more A level’s at A* or A, our students will now progress to some of the country’s top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

For those not wishing to attend University I am delighted that so many of our students have secured excellent employment or apprenticeship opportunities.

THE BIG BANG!

The Cheadle College hosted the Cheadle & Gatley Round Table annual ��~�����~����!�����������������������������"���� �)��"������a resounding success with several thousand people of all ages attending the show.

The charity event began with a children’s ����� ����� ������ ��� �� ~����!� ��������for young children who wouldn’t be able

��� ����� ��� ���� ��� #��� ~����!� ������� �)���was also a fairground on site which added to the fun and family atmosphere of the evening. ,�������~���������������������"���������#���~����!����������������������������(����Fireworks who thrilled the crowd at what was the biggest and best display since we started hosting the event in 2013.

The event is organised by Cheadle & Gatley Round Table. Dozens of their volunteers helped to make the event successful and safe for the local community as well as raising money for local charities. Proceeds from this year’s event raised much needed donations for;

�� )��(�#���������(���!�����������������������lifeline for whoever needs it.

�� The Together Trust who provide a wide range of ��"���������������������������������##������family and specialist education support.

�� +8>�+����������������������������������+��������������8���~����>�������"���+8>�����of the rarest and most disabling genetic conditions.

The Round Table is worldwide organisation established in 1927 with many community achievements linked to its name and with about 8000 members in the UK. There are two core elements to life at The Round Table – community service and fun through an active social programme. )����������=�������~�������#�X�����������the ‘community service’ element of the local Round Table.

Kealy Aylwin Triple-Starred Distinction BTEC Level 3 in Travel and Tourism

The Cheadle and Marple College �����!����#����������)�����������������������(�����+��#��������is celebrating double success in the National BTEC Awards.

In this year’s competition the Network was voted runner-up in the Outstanding BTEC School/College of the {�������������������K����*���������#�)������������������8����������)@��&������������)��"�����Tourism Student of the Year. The awards took place on )�������7���������������'�����&�������������&����

)����#��������������������������"#�������������]��#������������!�"��������������~����������run by Pearson who own BTECs. Pearson received over 800 nominations across the 20 award categories for this year’s Awards.

���!�*����������������������>�����jK�������“The National BTEC Awards are an opportunity for us ������������#����������������X�����������������������������������������"#�������)@������������������������������������������������������providers up and down the country.”

������"�������������������*"������8�����������*�5��������������������������X���������!�placement Benidorm with a leading travel operator. Since leaving The Cheadle College Kealy has worked as a Passenger Service Agent with Jet2 Ground Operations at Manchester Airport.

Kealy said: “I am thrilled to win this award. My BTEC has helped me understand so much about Travel and ���������������� ������������������� �(������������well as the determination, motivation and the desire to accomplish my ambition of becoming Airline Cabin #�����

The National BTEC judges were impressed by Kealy’s passion for the travel and tourism industry and her drive to achieve her career ambitions. They praised her high levels of commitment and motivation and the valuable ���!�������������������������)@���������has set her on the path to achieving her ultimate goals within travel industry.

“It is vital to support and celebrate the hard work and achievements of outstanding BTEC students and their teachers. This year’s judges were impressed by the quality and number of nominations we received but )�� ����� ����������������� ���&�������� �������% said Mark Anderson.

Wearing it pink AS Law students took part in innovative Law and Justice Workshop at Manchester Crown Court.

Law inAction

The day was delivered by The National Centre for Citizenship and the Law. Through this hands-on educational visit our students �������������������������stimulating and challenging cultural environment of the Courts and gain �����������������������������roles within a courtroom and of their roles as active citizens.

This has helped to improve public ���!��������������!���������!��skills which are required as future members of the legal profession. (�����������������!�X����the whole experience and this has inspired a number of students to study law at a higher level’.

October is Breast Cancer *�����������������������annual campaign involving �������������������������to highlight the importance of �������������������������research.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month the aim is to get as many people as possible involved in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. *�����������������������������������

����������#�������������������������������"�������������jK����������>�!�Landmarks and the Pink Ribbon Ball and of course wearing it pink with all of you! Cheadle and Marple Campus fundraising "������������!���!������������donations for wearing pink and a lucky �#����������#�����������%

We would like to say a big thank you for those who participated in the Wear it PINK on Friday 23rd October 2015. Cheadle College raised £186.97 and Marple College raised over £148.00!
