Job Purpose

To provide support to the radiology team to maintain a smooth patient flow and high

standard of patient care. To assist in the care of patients whilst in the care of the Radiology Department.

Knowledge, training & experience required to do the job

No formal qualifications are required but the post holder must have good written and verbal

communication skills.

Organise own delegated daily duties. Arrange times for Ward patients to come to Department.

Provide information by explanation of often complex procedures, listening to the patients requirements in order to encourage compliance with the imaging process. Communicate with patient groups which include; elderly, children, mentally and physically handicapped persons and violent persons. Provide assistance and reassurance to patients awaiting examinations. Provide reassurance and receive information from relatives or carers. Consult radiography staff for advice with patients who are in pain or immobile. Pass on information relating to patient transfer to colleagues. Use telephone to contact wards e.g. patient’s appointment time and preparation instructions. To take part in meeting the needs of the patients under the supervision of a qualified health professional and working within the Hospitals policies, procedures and the philosophy of the department. To work collaboratively to provide a high standard of patient care. To have a working knowledge of hospital layout.

Duties and responsibilities will be assigned by the Superintendent Radiographer and may be changed depending on the requirements of the Radiology service. Radiographers will be available to consult with on a daily basis and provide direct supervision and training when required. Senior Radiographers will delegate other tasks on a daily basis. Ensuring all stock is rotated to utilise products efficiently.

Required to undertake mandatory training sessions which include; Moving and handling, Data Protection, Resuscitation training, Fire safety and Infection control. Complete competency documentation to enable safe practice in department modality. To participate in the departmental appraisal scheme and to utilise the hospital incident reporting system.

Generally assisting in the care of patients, including explaining procedures, changing requirements, helping and escorting patients or relatives as necessary. To safely transfer patients to the imaging department from other areas of the Hospital and to safely transfer them back. Transfer will involve using beds, trolleys, wheelchairs or on foot. To assist Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners or Radiologists to safely transfer and move patients during imaging examinations. Liaise with wards, porters and staff to ensure patients are scanned in a timely manner. Preparing the examination rooms before procedures. To chaperone and support patients in the department to ensure their comfort and safety. To act upon instructions given to help provide a safe, clean and comfortable environment. Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in compliance with the Hospitals infection policy. Accurately check patient’s identity before all Radiology examinations. To treat patients with empathy and respect at all times. To restock departmental areas as required reporting any shortages to the Superintendent Radiographer. Adhere to the Society of Radiographers ‘Code of Conduct’. E.g. patient confidentiality. Undertake additional training and duties to support the development of the service.

On no account must information relating to identifiable patients be divulged to anyone other than authorised persons, for example, medical, nursing or other professional staff, as appropriate, who are concerned directly with the care, diagnosis and /or treatment of the patient. If you are in any doubt whatsoever as to the authority of a person or body asking for information of this nature, you must seek advice from your manager. Similarly, no information of a personal or confidential nature concerning individual members of staff should be divulged to anyone without the proper authority having first been given. Failure to observe these rules will be regarded by your employers as gross misconduct which could result in disciplinary action being taken against you. In the case of information held on computer systems, you may be held personally liable if you in any way knowingly contravene the appropriate terms of the Data Protection Act 2018.

Organise own delegated daily duties. Assess a patient’s ability to undress for an examination and assist them. Decide if stock levels need replenishing in line with departmental procedure and advise the senior Radiographer.

Must be able to use and clean the following equipment:- Patient hoists to assist the moving of immobile patients. Imaging tables, wheelchairs and patient trolleys for the transfer of patients

Must be able to use the following equipment:

RIS (Radiology Information system) for booking out patients PACS (Picture Archive and Communication System) to check patient details and successful transfer of images. Ultrasound machine to enter examination details and select patient from the machine’s work list. If the work list is not available, manually enter patient details.

Conform to Local rules regarding radiation protection e.g. the use of lead aprons using a screening procedure. Participate in the departmental appraisal system and utilise the hospitals incident reporting system. Conform to the Health and Safety at work act 1974. Conform to the Society of Radiographers Professional code of conduct, e.g. patient confidentiality. Be responsible for the safety of staff and patients. Report faults immediately to a senior member of staff.

Frequently using caring and diplomatic skills when assessing a patients needs prior to and during Ultrasound and X-ray examinations

Provide physical assistance to patients requiring changing into gowns often with disabilities or an inability to communicate on a daily basis. The majority of the day is spent standing and walking and bending to assist patients. Cleaning of x-ray equipment and surrounding areas weekly and changing mattress sheets several times a day involves bending and lifting. Cleaning of Personal Protective equipment e.g. Lead Aprons Transfer of patients from trolleys, beds and chairs onto x-ray tables requires the use of safe moving and handling skills, using mechanical aids when required this takes place several times daily Possess keyboard skills for the entry of data into PACS and RIS Open and hold heavy lead lined doors frequently

Exposure to unpleasant odours and bodily fluids frequently throughout the day. Cleaning up of body fluids e.g. spillage from Barium Enemas in x-ray rooms and toilets. Taking patients to and assisting at the toilet. Moving from cold air conditioned areas to hot air conditions in the working areas.
