Quality has continued to be the undercover for the manufacturing prowess of India Inc. Brick and mortar companies have adopted and perfected various qualitative improvements in their manufacturing processes hitherto. The CII Institute of Quality too, through its TPM Club India, continues to play a discerning role in enhancing productivity. However, the winds of change are heralding in the new digital era. However, it portends new challenges to retain and thereafter sustain growth right from the boardroom to the shop floor, both in the Manufacturing and Services sectors. Digital transformation needs to be sustained with long term commitment.

In this backdrop, it is relevant that the CII Institute of Quality is organizing its 22nd National Quality Summit focusing on the theme “Delivering Quality in the Digitized Era – New Directions for Sustained Value Creation” during November in New Delhi. The disruptive and productive impacts of digital technologies are already impacting corporate operations and performances. While there are still some “doubting Thomases”, it is well known that manufacturing value chains and operating models can significantly benefit from digital technologies.

The Summit will focus on digital innovation to address key business drivers to reduce costs, increase productivity, shorten time-to-market and increase customer focus. It will highlight the current state of the art regarding digitization and its tools and methods, and to identify key digital opportunities in the manufacturing industry. When properly exploited, digital technologies can help manufacturers turn into highly innovative, fast-growing and agile companies. Digital innovations such as collaboration platforms, analytics, social networks, rapid manufacturing, virtualization, cloud computing and crowd sourcing will progressively play critical roles in shaping the fortunes of companies. In order to build a cohesive digital roadmap, organizations need to adopt a

four-pronged design-innovate-prioritize-implement approach.

The over two decade old Quality Summit, has always been the stage for thought leadership and this time too, it will be ideal for members to exchange ideas and concerns in a meaningful way. Host to a galaxy of noted speakers and thought leaders, the Summit sessions in focus shall include The Future of Manufacturing: A business-as-usual approach will not deliver that outcome; The servitization of manufacturing: A reflection on future challenges; The digitization of everything: how organizations must adapt to changing consumer behavior; Technology Trends 2014: Inspiring Disruptive; Sustainability: Comparing Lean, Six Sigma and Total Quality Management; Time : The Next Source of Competitive Advantage: Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM) and Manufacturing Breakthroughs: Three Top Winners of Business Excellence.

The Quality Summit will also be the stage for the Awards Ceremony of the CII-EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence 2014 where the best performing Indian organizations, whether private, public or non-profit will be recognized. Many Indian organizations have already benefitted from the excellence process and assessment. The Award is regarded as one of the most respected and coveted trophies of successful organizations having indisputable track record of success in turning strategy into action and continuously improving their organization’s performance.

as manpower, inventory, energy, and working capital. Small investments in product and process design, skills development, statistical analytics, visual management, TPM tools leads to dramatic improvements in the quality-cost-time combination. Unfortunately, the inertia to change is the biggest constraint. Another constraint is the lack of adequate analytics of company performance, despite a lot of measurement and generation of data by individual functions that takes place in almost all SMEs that includes process indicators, product rework and rejections, manpower deployment, raw material and other input costs, sales. Simple ratios used as company performance indicators such as inventory turnover ratio, rejection / rework costs as a percentage of sales, defect segregation, productivity per employee, delivery performance compliance, enable effective decision making in real time. MSMEs also need to develop sharp diagnostic and remedial capabilities to resolve and improve day to day irritants to quality-time and cost through the use of proven approaches starting from Kaizen to Quality circles to Six sigma.

A cultural shift is required in the way MSMEs approached quality, summarized in the table below

Quality road-map for MSMEs

CII Institute of Quality presented an overview of quality as it impacts trade and industry in the modern times at the CII (WR) MSME Summit 2014 held on 14 March 2014 in Mumbai. The MSME Summit was organized on the theme Visionary Emerging MSME’s – Strategies for Getting to the Next Level, in which a special session on Focus on Quality Management for MSME’s was convened as a key input for enabling MSMEs to meet the competitive challenges both from the large segment as well as from global imports. Mr Anupam Kaul, Principal Counsellor, presented the key developments and new initiatives on quality that have taken place in recent times. As a member of the ISO committee for the next revision of ISO 9001, he unveiled some of the strategic changes being considered such as risks to quality, and business contexts in the revised standard. Highlighting the nature of difficulties encountered by SMEs, he presented practical approaches that SMEs should adopt to strike the best balance between quality output, time schedules and costs.

One of the major impediments in obtaining the right balance is an inadequate understanding of the quality cost structure. In an attempt to ensure high customer end quality, most SMEs absorb high internal rejection costs, which has a spiral impact on other cost elements such
