N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015I am not a therapist...But Im working on itNobodys perfect!I suffer from anosognosia: Im testing things without noticing it

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015ChangesResistanceManipulations

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Big C - 12 MonkeysConflict is a pure by-product of Evolution:Dont we say united like the fingers of the handalthough we have opposable thumbs?

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Psychology Today, report by (en) G. R. Stephenson (1967), Cultural acquisition of a specific learned response among rhesus monkeys, Progress in Primatology, Stuttgart, Fischer, 1967, p.279-288 is said to show some similitudes with the former story which is now put as a parable5

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all the other monkeys with cold water. After a while another monkey makes the attempt with same result, all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.Now, put the cold water away. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be assaulted.

6

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm.Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.

7

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015After replacing all of the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not?Because as far as they know that is the way it has always been done around here.8

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Managing Your Test Process08/11/2016which are exactly the notions we want to avoid when it comes to stop testing, right?

So, do they really understand us when we talk about?

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Lets put this in contextEX: When facing a limited time / budget

Dont say: - well only test for a week

Rather say: - well make sure essential tests will fit within a week

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015

Had you got to sell testing to your top-management already?

Did you succeed? How did you manage it?

What were your major difficulties?

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Ex: how can you sell the benefits of testing to your CEO?22

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all things software. After serving his company loyally for over 30 years, he happily retired. Many years later the company contacted him regarding a seemingly impossible problem they were having with one of their multimillion dollar software. They had tried everything and everyone else to get the code to work but to no avail. In desperation, they called on the retired engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past. The engineer reluctantly took the challenge. He spent a day studying the code. At the end of the day, he marked a small "x" in a LOC on a particular component and stated, "This is where your problem is." The code was replaced and the software worked perfectly again. The company received a bill for $50,000 from the engineer for his service. They demanded an itemized accounting of his charges. The engineer responded briefly:"One LOC mark $1. Knowing where to put it $49,999"

Karpmans drama trianglePERSECUTORRESCUERVICTIM

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Avoid responsibility too close social relationshipGet sensations31

Major characteristicsRigid, superiorCritical, oppressive Its all your faultManipulative, blackmailingyou should, it would get better ifStarter

Rescues spontaneously, no direct demand or sollicitationFeels guilty if he doesnt go to the rescue / self-esteem (white knight)Keeps the victim dependent (permission to fail)let me help youEnabler

Oppressed, helpless, victimized, not responsible, powerless, ashamedIndirect complaints and demands Poor self-image, focuses on the negative aspects, unable to act or make decisionshe makes my life a Hell, poor me, it only happens to me Starter

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015The Victim: The Victim's stance is "Poor me!" The Victim feels victimized, oppressed, helpless, hopeless, powerless, ashamed, and seems unable to make decisions, solve problems, take pleasure in life, or achieve insight. The Victim, if not being persecuted, will seek out a Persecutor and also a Rescuer who will save the day but also perpetuate the Victim's negative feelings. The Rescuer: Karpman drama triangleThe rescuer's line is "Let me help you." A classic enabler, the Rescuer feels guilty if he/she doesn't go to the rescue. Yet his/her rescuing has negative effects: It keeps the Victim dependent and gives the Victim permission to fail. The rewards derived from this rescue role are that the focus is taken off of the rescuer. When he/she focuses their energy on someone else, it enables them to ignore their own anxiety and issues. This rescue role is also very pivotal, because their actual primary interest is really an avoidance of their own problems disguised as concern for the victims needs. The Persecutor: The Persecutor insists, "It's all your fault." The Persecutor is controlling, blaming, critical, oppressive, angry, authoritative, rigid, and superior.

32

Secondary benefits and motivationsAvoid their own problems and responsibilities (its your fault)Response to a forme deceptive environmentFeels empowered, all almighty

Avoid their own problems and responsibilities (its not their fault)Effort to attract attention Feels fine and increased self-esteem (do the good) or self-control / balanceMaintains dependency (if not > persecutor)

Avoid their own problems and responsibilities (its not my fault)Encountered real pain and sad situationsComfort zone (assisted)

If you cannot act upon it or change it = it is NOT YOUR FAULT!!!

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Power is key = if you cannot act and make it change you are NOT responsible33

Drama:Roles are complementary (co-dependancy)

No victim no persecutor!Avoid to consider a broader dysfunction or harmWe all have a favorite role to play

Players can change roles from time to time:

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015A drama triangle arises when a person takes on the role of a victim or persecutor. This person then feels the need to enlist other players into the conflict. These enlisted players take on roles of their own that are not static, and therefore various scenarios can occur. For example, the victim might turn on the rescuer, the rescuer then switches to persecuting or as often happens, a rescuer is encouraged to enter the situation,

34

Some examples of role-changesEX1: 3 behaviors on the same projectsTesters feel like second-class citizens = victimsTesters covering les developers = saviorsTesters accusing developers = persecutors

EX2: the fate of unemploymentpoor unemployed people fired by persecuting managementUnemployment office trying to help them find a new jobUnemployment office persecuting them by asking evidences and threatening them of suspending their allocationUnemployment office feeling bad because theres no job available or they dont get enough resources to do thier job properly/

Saturday Night FeverFridays bug

Technicians victimssaviors (non recognized > victims)Management saviorspersecutorsvictims (budgets operational management)

Manage crisis or manage BY crisis?

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Every Friday its the same ritual = a problem appear in the morning, by miracleTensions raise during the day until 15:00 when top management asks mid-management to solve the issueA crisis meeting is decided during which operational management and technicians are asked to stay late and come during the week-en eventually to fix the issue. Dont ever try to save them, they like being saviors, but when they dont get recognized, they become victims or persecutors in time and so on and so forth for ever and ever after36

The Telco hall of shameVictims are playing learned sabotage(well come to that later)

Persecutors become victims(to justify their own behavior) or in (false) saviors(to get more power and be well-considered by the upper management)

Auditors / consultants are saviors or persecutors to come

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015The Wall was actually a corridor, but it was even more difficult to go through it 37

How do you get off the runaway train?Know that youre playing = youre not nave anymoreChange of perspective (from state to action)I am a victim = TO BE I have a problem = TO HAVERefuse to play, refuse to take the expected partNo players, no gameThink, take time and let silence do the trickDont rushFilter, not everything is for grantedAsk yourself / others questions why am I told this? , what am I going to do with it?Make the game harderReformulating / ask for more information Gain timeMake the game harder, less attractive

!

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Attention: refusing to play might have dramatic consequences with compulsive players You block them from what theyre used to (their habits) and put them out of their comfort zone (its a change) -> they resist and easily get furious!38

Lets practice a bitWhat sort of conflicts often happens in your work environment?

Can you now identify Karpmans triangle in your own world?

Now lets sit down together and see how we can solve the issue

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015

47

YES, we are highly subject to manipulationTricks, bad faith, mentalism

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015

Bertram ForerYou have a great need for other people to like and admire you.You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them.Your sexual adjustment has presented problems for you.Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure inside. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. You pride yourself as an independent thinker and do not accept others statements without satisfactory proof. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others. At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, reserved. Some of your aspirations tend to be pretty unrealistic.Security is one of your major goals in life.Forer BR (1949). The fallacy of personal validation: A classroom demonstration of gullibility Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology. 44, 118-123.Average scoring 4,2 / 5

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015In his classic 1948 experiment, Forer administered a personality test to his students. Rather than scoring the tests and giving individual assessments, he gave all the students exactly the same analysis copied from a newspaper astrology column. The students were then asked to evaluate the description on a scale of zero through five, with five being the most accurate. The average evaluation was 4.26. The experiment has been repeated hundreds of times since 1948, and the average remains about 4.2.The Forer effect shows that people tend to accept generalized descriptions of their personalities without realizing that the same evaluation could apply to nearly anyone else, because people want the results to be true. This experiment is frequently cited as criticisms of other personality tests, like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

49

What is essential to a tester? What do you think?Resistance to stressCommunicationResilienceAttention to detailsHow good do you think you are?

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Lets manipulate - procurementThe technique of the funnel (sales)

Do you rather look for a profile type like X or Y?In the X type of profiles, we have P* or M* (who has more experience, but who is a bit more expensive)M* and P* are both mobile and available right now. They both know your business / technology.Of course, J* is fine toowould you like to decide now or do you wish to think a bit more about it and select one of those 2?Excellent, you made the right choice. Youll be happy with it.

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015and backReversed funnel (procurement)

EX1: Do me your best price, and we sign right now if I get 20% off

EX2: Press exclusivity you deliver good contents, the journalist just integrates it with a limited visibilityand no counterpart!

EX3: Partner: your best price is not enough! Competition is presenting a big hitterbut dont worry I know the customer well

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015How to get a vendor completely mad the best @math wins the game53

Double bind (Bateson - Watzlawick)Of stepmothers and ties

Be spontaneous / it is forbidden to forbid / be great my little oneEX1: You decide / Its your choice / Its your callEX2: Business refusing to work with ITWhat to do when the solution obviously involves both of them?EX3: Get overall acceptance for the audit within the TST dept. and show the lacks in DEV and PRD

Court = tie parties together when the choice is not obvious

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015EX2 = CDJ (IT et Mtier, les CP refusent de se parler)54

How do you get off the runaway train?Find the return on investment (whats in it for me?)Understand and decrypt (you cannot play anymore if you know it)Share (involve/comit) togetherMobilize and define common goalsConfront (adult to adult)What do you mean exactly?Where is the problem?Defuse with humor or playing the fool (why dont you go and play elsewhere?)Remove ambiguitiesDo not play the part youre expected to playIm not your victimHelp meMind you!

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Lets manipulate

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Its nobodys faultStop the thieveThe watch dog behavior changes drastically if it has been asked first (20% vs. 95%)

Ex: the TM goes on holidays, reporting stops, test environment doesnt get maintained etc. etc.

Commitment is key

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015(PSY) Conditioning ( flattering or seduce)She looks at a XVth century virgin You seem to be so sentive to the human pain so she will be enclined to donate to charity

EX: Its only businessI see youre serious about the quality of your productSo, a small extra sacrifice (invest) will notmake much of a difference

ATTN: do the right conditioning or prepare to fail!Manipulations & C (Joule - Beauvois)

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Abstruse trapWhen you have a good story

Is it a good story after all?

Wasted moneyWrong purchase of a trip on the same WE 1000 vs. 500 (more fun) no refund 54% choose the first option though!!!

Outsourced billing system is going nutsIntegrator has no influence on the core billing (slow, unstable)The choice has been made but changing is still possibleThey keep on with specific development and try to find workarounds (like asynchronous automation)They will even export stupidity in the whole Group.

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015

The foot in the doorAn expected behevior is prepared by a harmless and apparently costless action, It is then activated by an implicit or explicit demand(You, the Office expert) can you remind me how to do a conditional sum in Excel? (conditionning)

The expected behavior is more expensive and would probably not be obtained spontaneouslyCan you get me all critical defects in billing module since version 2,3 sorted by date with the corresponding developer who fixed them (demand)

The result is much better when they had the choice / when the freely chose to do it (you are free to / your choice = 4X higher)Thare are limits and expiry time (1 week to 10 days in general)

Ex: The increased efficiency after team events (Usually not lasting over 10 days)

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Slam the door in their faceA strong and obviously unacceptable demandmeant to be refused!!!Can you replay all tests related to application X on version 3.1.5? (it will take me the whole day and more lets try to escape this)

followed by a weaker demand (as unacceptable at first however) meant to be accepted (as if the fact that they refused the first was forcing them to accept the latter)yes, I understand, I would have done the same. But if I just got an idea of what it does on module Z, that would really save my life,(OK, its only a couple of hours and I already said no you cant say no to everything after all!)

The higher the perceived contrast the better(shirt 140 vs 65 - the Souk of Cairo)Direct contact and the small time between demands help a lot(much more than for the foot in the door)

Reciprocity(give and take / split the compromise / return the favor)

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015Youve got the touch, youve got the lookIn many cases, touching the one youre asking a favor to favors contact and good will (pat on the back, touching arms)

EX: from 63% (questioned) vs 93% (questioned and touched) give the money left in a phone booth

Looking straight in the eyes (but not too intensively neither too long)

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015The footin the mouthHow are you doing? facilitates contacts for a great deal. It also helps in getting a yes, evn if everyone seems not to care.

The mood or the answer do not matterMost mails or sales meetings start with thisand it is not purely social

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015So, it is not that terrible after allAnnonce the drama or let them think the catastrophe is coming then ask them (for a lesser impacthowever)

Sales Techniques or effects of surprise based upon doom-mongering(the more they think they avoid the worst, the better)

EX1: Some companies who do not use our services had their website hacked recently and their commercial and employee data exposed publicly

EX2: This morning, the first test results tended to show a project shift of about 3 month. After a more detailed analysis, it turned out that we could reduce it to a month and a half. (Phew! That was close!)

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015ConclusionsLes hommes passent leur vie la recherche d'eux mme. On n'arrive jamais une conclusion dfinitive en ce domaine.

Men spend their life seeking themselves. One never comes to a final conclusion in this matter.

Rosa Candida (2010)Audur Ava Olafsdottir

N Olivier Denoo Psychologie du Test ps_testware 2015ConclusionsIntroducing structured or professional software testing is a (major) CHANGE

Change is usually facing RESISTANCE that can be organized (consciously or not) in the form of GAMES (destructive)

We can COUNTERACT but also USE GAMES and techniques to POSITIVELY MANIPULATE our environment and organize the desired CHANGE
