ENERGY CRISIS IN PAKISTAN

AND REMEDIAL MEASURES

Page 3: project slides

THESIS STATEMENTTHESIS STATEMENTPakistan is in the grip of a serious energy crisis that is affecting all sectors of the economy and the various segments of the society. As the situation stands to-day, there are hardly any immediate solutions to resolve the issue. A change of attitude and a change of life style is needed at the national level which should be triggered by the ruling elite and followed by all segments of the society that have access to electricity. At best there could be some short and long-term solutions to the crisis but they need immediate planning and execution with an enormous investment.

IMPORTANT CONCLUSIONS

• Conflict of Interest

• Water sharing Problem

• The political Factor

• Kalabagh Dam

Page 16: project slides

Salient Features of

Kalabagh Dam

Page 17: project slides

Salient Features of Kalabagh Dam Will provide cheap electricity (3600 MW). Will store surplus water in flood season and release it

during the rest of the year. Will replace storage lost by sedimentation in existing

reservoirs at Mangala, Chashma and Tarbala. Will provide additional storage to meet existing water

shortages during early Kharif sowing period of April-June.

Will provide effective regulation of Indus River to meet additional Kharif allocations of the provinces under WAA.

Will generate a large chunk of hydro-power for meeting the growing demand of agricultural, industrial and domestic consumers through low cost option.

Will be reducing dependence on imported fuels. Will create employment for 30,000 persons during

construction and significant numbers after commissioning.
