VISITORS TO PROBUS MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES Our club has been advised by Probus South Pacific (PSPL) that (consistent with all other clubs) for any non-member who attends more than THREE meetings or activities in a current year we are obliged to pay a non-member fee to PSPL. Payment of this fee will enable our club to amongst other things meet its insurance obligations. For this membership year the non-member fee has been set at $20 Payment of this fee will ensure that all our visitors con continue to attend any meeting, outing or function as they are very welcome to do so and receive the same enjoyment and fun as we do. To this end it has been decided for the future to waive the gold coin donation for infrequent visitors to our monthly meetings. George Thomas.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT?

RATIONALE:

Your Committee is considering replacing polystyrene cups at morning tea with BYO coffee/tea mugs. We already have a precedent for this practice with members bringing their own wine glasses to our special lunches and we hope to extend this to monthly morning tea breaks.

We have been approached on a number of occasions by people who are concerned by our use of disposable cups. Firstly there is the waste and environmental aspect and secondly, members are concerned with the stability of the cups and, therefore, their possible safety risk.

We have considered supplying mugs for everyone but we are already faced with storage problems and this would only add to the problem.

So….. we would like to trial BYO Mugs at our very next meeting in APRIL.

LOGISTICS:

In order to streamline things, we intend to have a rostered helper stationed at the Registration Desk with a pot of coffee ready to fill your BYO Mugs as you enter the tea room. Tea and another coffee pot will be proffered at the Kitchen hatch, as in the past. (There will be a few polystyrene cups available for those who forget to bring their own - but don’t tell anyone we said this!!)

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR OWN MUG TO MEETINGS:

Why not store your mug in the same place as your name tag to make it easier to remember to bring both items?

FINE DINING

“Fine Dining” is a great way to catch up with old and new members of our club. It is fun just to have time to talk and find out more about each other in a pleasant atmosphere. Sometimes we find out how close we lived to each other as kids even that we went to the same school.

At our next meeting I will hand the leaders of the group an envelope with “Guide Lines” of how to organize your “Fine Dining” outing.

All welcome – couples or singles - and if you would like to join with a special friend just give a call.

At South West Rocks we managed the weather long enough to check out Trial Bay Gaol, finalise the bocce competition (congratulations Dennis and Wilma), enjoy golf at Crescent Head golf course with panoramic views of the coastline and explore other local attractions. Then the rains came! Some caravaners developed their own water frontage and we all scurried between cabins, cars and the camp kitchen while trying not to get drenched. Nothing could dampen our spirits! Thanks to Marion, Terry, Wayne, Col and others we enjoyed Crazy Whist, a games night and an organ recital.

Then we travelled to One Mile Beach in the beautiful Port Stephens area. In addition to exploring the scenic bays, walks and lookouts, we also learnt that members of our group sure know how to party! Our Hawaiian Night fancy dress contest highlighted the creativity (and shamelessness) of our group members and their friends.

Once we all stopped laughing, judges Laurine and Jenny Mirams declared Maurie the winner of the mens’ fancy dress and several awards were given to the ladies for flare and innovation. (I hope you get to see the photos…unbelievable!). Group members’ were then asked to display their dancing skills with the twist, tango, jive and freestyle. The good news is that no-one dislocated a hip, the police weren’t called and Alan and Judy were declared our dancing stars! If you want to refine your twisting skills, I’d recommend Dawn and Bob as coaches. Well done to compere Bill, dancing judges, Jenny Morcam and Roseanne, and Mr Music, Wayne. Our great night ended with a wonderful poem and song about our trip written by Wilma.

As mentioned earlier, there’s so much to share. In summary, we had a great time with lots of fun and laughs and we also learnt a lot…about the places we visited and each other. Thanks to everyone for being such good sports, for looking out for each other and for a generally great getaway. Trudy Neal

GETAWAYS GROUP

The main news to report from the recent Mudgee to Port Stephens Getaway is that we had a ball! As many of you know, a getaway is a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of scenery, learn about different places and learn about each other. Here’s an overview of what we learnt on this Getaway.

Well, the learning started en route to Mudgee as some of our group (who shall remain nameless) learnt that Corowa and Cowra are different towns located in difference places which made sense of repeated requests from their GPS to ‘do a U-turn!’ In the interesting little towns of Hill End and Sofala we learnt a lot about the history of gold mining in the local area while Col and Terry learnt that if you walk long and far enough after dinner in Cowra, you can find a shop that sells ice-cream in a cone even after all the other shops have closed.

At Mudgee, Wilma learnt that $10 can get you a great wine in the lucky dip at a local winery and we all appreciated the wonderful work done by museums in Gulgong and Mudgee to preserve key aspects of Australian history. Other hardy group members discovered that playing golf early in the morning at Mudgee is a great experience.

As the Getaway continued, so did the learning. Col and Alan are not at all ‘sheepish’ when bragging about the woollen shirts and socks they bought at the Nundle Woollen Mills. ‘I’ve never felt so cool’ Col declared in 38+ degree heat in Tamworth. (Mmm…really??).We also learnt that despite the abilities of the stars highlighted in the Golden Guitar museum, nothing could match the costumes and the talent of our group in the TVP Has (Irish) Talent contest. The crowd generally approved when Judge Judy (aka Mary Kathleen) and Alan declared Terry and Marionette the winners. Amazing performance! However, some of us are still coming to terms with the deep and meaningful relationship Jake developed with his new pet (a green toy dog from the local op shop). Jenny, can you please explain?

Our trip across the Great Dividing Range to South West Rocks focused drivers’ attention as they negotiated hair-pin bends, steep climbs and descents. However, morning tea at Apsley Falls and the beautiful scenery en route made it worthwhile.

He is found, and befriended, by a brilliant surgeon, who gives him a home in a London hospital for the remaining few years of his life. There he becomes the toast of Victorian London’s high society, but his thirst for normality brings about his eventual demise. A Visit to Hot Seat Recording Fourteen members and friends headed to Docklands Studio to observe Eddie McGuire doing his Hot Seat thing. After a peak hour run with plenty of spaces in the free all-day parking area, we were directed to the waiting area where we were asked to present any recording devices or phones to be locked away. We then signed a full page detailed privacy agreement and were later escorted to the studio and directed to our seating. After that it was a very relaxing and entertaining day. The show from the audience view was surprisingly familiar if one watched the show on a regular basis. There were six episodes recorded between 11am and 6pm during which we had regular breaks between the recording sessions with free sandwiches bottled water and other nibbles. No one won a million this time but there were two who went right through and won prizemoney of $10,000. They told us there has only been one winner of the million in 1700 episodes. Recording was very efficient with a great and funny “audience director” Mike, providing instructions for our cheers and clapping in the background. The audience reaction is a very important part of the show. Eddie and Mike were very good in the breaks providing opportunities to ask the sometimes-awkward questions that one would be expected to be asked about the show. Privacy agreement prevents us from divulging here, the questions and sometimes funny answers we got. But we can say that the show is run with high integrity. We were assured that the questions are sourced from an outside source and in no way manipulated. It was a long day sitting for most of the time and with no chatting opportunities during recording, but the happy chatter about the show from the five ladies accompanying me as driver on the way home indicated that the show was very enjoyable.
