President’s Message

Fran Claasens

Summer is upon us. Blue skies and 100 degree days are ahead. Picnics and

barbeques, graduations past, and for this guild, there will be no meeting, no

community service and no show and tell in July. Vacation awaits us.

In July I'm going to the Reno Quilt Show for a week and taking 3 classes. One on a

Judy Neimeyer leaf table mat, another using a 10 degree ruler, and finally one on

machine applique held at the Grand Sierra Resort. Then I'm on to a sewing

timeshare with friends. When it's really too hot to do anything but go swimming,

sewing in really cold air conditioning in a luxury hotel does indeed sound

grand. Some feel imprisoned by our valley heat. I say what an opportunity to

finish old projects, work on our challenge and get a jump start on those Christmas

gifts and relax. I say summer is the perfect time to look at some of what we have

and give it the boot. Do you have projects you aren't ever going to finish? Do you

have fabric you don't like anymore? Have you run out of room with all of your

treasures? What better time to purge and get ready for our GUBA Sale in

October. It's not that far off. Do you have quilt projects almost done? Perhaps

some that just need the last border, some that just need quilting? Finish those

and you can freely get rid of those and give them to community service in

August. To me summer is a more reflective time than after New Year's. The

longer days give us more time to have fun and accomplish what we have been

waiting to do all year. So crank that AC down and get sewing. Don't forget it's

Margarita time too. Can't wait! Get your groove on and start up that

machine. Enjoy the break.

Bye for now,

Fran

FACEBOOK CHANGES

If you are a Facebook user and have “Liked” our PQG Facebook page in the past,

you will find that page no longer exists. As Facebook goes, things are constantly

changing. So, I have created a new Facebook page For Pioneer Quilters Guild. To

find us, please do a search for Pioneer Quilters Guild. You will know it’s the right

page if you see our logo of the wagon train as the profile picture and our beautiful

2018 Opportunity Quilt as the profile cover. Once there, please like us

again! This is a public page, which means the content is not private. I have

created an “event” for our 2018 Quilt Show and Sale. Please share this event with

your family and friends on Facebook. If all of us active Facebook users did this,

just think how many people will hear about our show and attend! Please let me

know if you have any questions or need help navigating this change.

2019 NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Can you believe it’s already time to be thinking of our guild activities for 2019? I

know, but it’s true! Per our Bylaws, we form the nominating committee in

June. So here we are: Chris Westbrook, Kim Timms and Shelly Jose. We are

looking forward to contacting you if you are currently a Committee Chairperson,

and looking forward to hearing from any and all of you with your fabulous ideas

for a fun, exciting, educational and giving next year. Please holler, call, text or

email us. Our lines are now OPEN!

Community Service Community Service Update, June 2018

• On May 29th

Inga and Barbara took 40 quilts and 55 pillowcases to Kaiser

Hospital, where they were greatly appreciated. Kaiser mentioned that last

year at Christmas time they had over 200 patients in the hospital and they

ran out of quilts and blankets (from other groups). Apparently many of the

patients were without visitors, so the quilts were especially treasured. That

led to a commitment to give them 50 more quilts in December, so we really

need to get busy.

• At the June 4th

guild meeting Community Service received 24 preemies; 14

quilts; 55 pillowcases; and 134 Christmas stockings.

• Later this month 264 Christmas stockings will be given to the Blue Star

Moms for their military children.

Thank you for all who are actively participating in Community Service. We can’t

do it without your help. If you don’t want to wait in line at the turn-in table, a few

members have figured out a shortcut to getting those tickets when they have a

large amount coming. If you will go to our website, printout the form for

Community Service, fill it out and then email Barbara Victorino (

[email protected]) the amount of tickets you are due, she will have the

tickets all counted out and ready to hand to you. Bring the completed form and

whatever you are turning in to the meeting.

Don’t forget our next Community Service Workday on Tuesday, June 19th

from

9:30 – 3:00(ish)! Bring your sewing machines and supplies and we will be working

on the kits that have been prepared for you. The patterns are easy and can often

be completed in a full day of sewing. We hope to see you there, but remember

that if you can’t make a Workday, there are always plenty of opportunities to

support Community Service at our guild meetings.

Challenge Quilts Valerie Price

Is everybody having fun working on their challenge quilts?

As I look at the calendar, the year seems to be flying by. Since we have no

meetings in the months of July and September, the two meetings in August will

be the last two meetings before the display of your gorgeous Challenge Quilts.

Please send me the sizes of your projects, no later than August 27th (the second

meeting in August).

You may phone me at 916-771-2527, or email me at [email protected]

with the size of your project.

We can’t wait to see all of the finished projects hanging at the October meeting.

I thought it would be fun to know how many members live where. I was surprised

with the outcome. Just as many members live in Lincoln as Rocklin. Roseville only

came in second by one member.

March meeting had the highest attendance so far this year with 141 members

present.

As of the May meeting, the fifth of the year, 41 members have attended all five.

Just a reminder that all members need to attend at least five meetings in the

calendar year

There is a glitch with the excel spreadsheet that is the roster. It has a major snag

in it. Every time I make a copy to update the roster on the website, it changes all

birthdates by one day. I am working on it, but I need to make an entirely new

spread sheet. This will take some time as I will have to retype all

information. That means no cut and paste. So please be patient on the birthday

issue.

We hope you are still having fun with getting projects finished! Number four is

due at the first meeting in August. Keep stitching and you may be one of the big

winners!

2018 Quilt Show Cornelia Smithson

[email protected]

Thank you to everyone who has submitted their entries for the Pioneer Quilt

Show 2018. 17 early quilt entries were turned in at the June general meeting.

Christine Westbrook and Pat Callahan were the lucky winners of a $25 gift card to

local quilt shops for early submission. Congratulations ladies! This is exciting news

to get off to a good start for our beautiful quilt show.

Remember to add a picture of your quilt including a 3X4 picture of yourself to

attach to the front label with your information on it. You can take a digital picture

and print it out on computer paper at the best quality setting as long as the

picture turns out nice. Quilt Entry Forms and Quilt Entry Rules and Instructions

are found on our website for you to print.

We will have another drawing for two gift cards at the August meeting!

Submit your entry forms with pictures either to me at the August 2018 meeting or

mail them to:

Raffle Baskets Tricia Steen

Raffle baskets are an important part of our quilt show and the guild depends on

our members to make them as wonderful as they always have been. Thank you

to all the mini groups and committees that have already let me know of your

plans for a basket. So far we have commitments for 13 baskets. Themes include a

Kindle Fire, Insta-Pot, One Pot Cooker, Christmas, Chocolate, Spa and Birds. A

great start! Our goal for the show is 21 baskets which means I’d like to hear from

7 more groups. SO NOW is the time to let me know of your intentions. Different

baskets appeal to different people (just like quilts do!) so the more we have and

the more diverse they are, the better they will do.

Baskets tend to do well when they have fabric in them, whether fat quarters or

jelly rolls or layer cakes. And food is always a hit.

You can get together with your mini group, or with two or three other friends,

and make a basket. Or you can contribute things in general - perhaps a ruler you

bought and then found you already had, or something else that's new or like

new. Or you can donate some money toward a basket that someone else is

putting together... we'll take any and all donations. Our raffle basket team can

help with ideas for themes and may be able to supplement with items they've

solicited from vendors.

The guild will be making 2 baskets of fat quarters from member donations. I will

be accepting those donations at any of the upcoming guild meetings.

So when you decide to help with a raffle basket, please let me know what you're

working on and who your contact person is so I can send out gentle reminders.

Much thanks for all your help to make our Raffle Baskets and our quilt show a

success in every way!!

Quilt Camp Colleen Voet

Q: What could be better than sewing all day with friends?

A: Doing it in a beautiful, calm environment where someone else cooks yummy,

healthy food for you and you don't even have to make your bed if you don't want

to.

Q: Where would that be?

A: Why, Mt. Hope Quilt Camp, of course!

Q: How do I sign up?

A: Go to the Camp web page (a link from the Activities page). Just above the

pictures is a link to the Registration form. Fill it out, give or send a check to one of

the camp co-chairs, and you're in!

Q: Is there still room?

A: Yes! And we will also welcome a friend or relative you'd like to bring with

you. We have plenty of sewing room (everybody will get a whole table for their

work station) and places to stay. Please join us.

Costs for lodging, food, and sewing space:

• 5 days, sharing a room: $295

• 5 days, single room: $360

• 3 days of your choice, sharing a room: $235

• 3 days of your choice, single room: $275

Website Update Colleen Voet

We have two new pages on our website, in the Members Only section:

• Member pictures - we have photos of most of our members, missing

(according to my count) about 36. They're in a pdf file, alphabetically by

first name, in columns on each page. So read down if you're looking for

somebody in particular. They're really helpful for learning who's who. They

join the pages showing our Executive Board, Committee Chairs, and our

Quilt Show Committee. Barbara Victorino will be at our second August

meeting taking pictures to fill in those missing. (If you really don't like the

one we already have of you, she'll re-take that too.) So come to the

meeting with your nicest smile!

• Our Mentor Program listing - If you're looking for a member who can help

you learn something new or improve your skills, this is the place to go. We

have members offering to help on a one-to-one basis with everything from

basic sewing, to advanced color selection and design - plus everything in

between.

If you can't find something you're looking for, try the Search box on most

pages. If you still can't find something, send me a message and I'll try to help. Or

if there's something you'd like to see on our website, I'd like to hear that too.

Social Secretary

Valerie Price

Just what is the Social Secretary. It is my pleasure to send out cards to members that are

ill or have suffered the loss of a loved one. Pioneer Quilters’ Guild wants all members to

know how much we care about them and their family members. Please contact me to let

me know if there is an illness or death in your family, so that I can send our well wishes to

you. There are times when the member herself is not able to contact me, so it is at a time

like this that we rely on our friends in the guild to let us know how we can help. If you or

a friend is going through a difficult time please contact

me at [email protected] or phone me at 916-759-2067. I want to make sure

that all of our members know that we care and are thinking about them at these difficult

times.

Members-at-Large It’s a new year and we have lots of fun and interesting things planned for 2018 at Pioneer

Quilters’ Guild. We would like to take this opportunity to let all members know that

Valerie Price and Marcia Krummel are your Members-at-Large for this year. We are

liaisons between the PQG Members and the PQG Board. If anyone has any questions or

concerns pertaining to the Guild we are more than happy to hear from you. Hopefully, we

can answer any of your questions and take any concerns you might have to the Board.

Executive Board Meeting Minutes Pioneer Quilters’ Guild Executive Board Meeting

May 29, 2018

The meeting was called to order by President Fran Claassens at 6:45

PM at the home of Chris Westbrook. In addition to Fran, those

present were: Chris Westbrook, Debra Carlisle, Sally Vandervort,

Martha Overman, Valerie Price, Patty Clausen, and guests, Colleen

Voet and Beth Gardner.

The minutes from the April 30, 2018 Executive Board Meeting were

approved, as published in the Guild Newsletter.

Old Business:

The quilt display by our members at the Shepherd of the Sierra

Church has been a success and very much appreciated by the

members of the Church. Guild members will be able to view the

display next week, during our General meeting.

Denise Long and her mini group have stepped forward to volunteer

for the making of the 2020 Opportunity Quilt. A design has been

presented to the board, but as yet, no fabric choices. A decision of

acceptance should be decided very soon.

The review of the Guild Bylaws and Policies and Procedures is

ongoing. Much discussion ensued on this matter and there are

several changes that the Board is considering. Decisions and

suggestions to the general membership, for a vote, will happen

within the next few months. The change that is bringing the most

consideration and discussion is the possibility of adding another

person to the PQG Board, which would be a Financial Secretary.

The Ways and Means committee has an “elect” Chairperson who

will work with Diane Hamilton for the remainder of this year, and

then take over as Chair, next year. Her name is Marilyn Spiegel.

Programs has filled their Program Elect position with two

members: Lianne Peterson and Alex Enneking.

Committee Reports:

Chris Westbrook, Vice-President, announced that the Guild is

currently signed up for a Twitter account. The Board voted to

delete this account, but to continue with the Guild Facebook page.

It is a good source of advertisement for our yearly Quilt Show. That

is a public domain, whereas the My Grove, our vehicle for

Newsletter distribution, is private.

Chris also announced that there are two Mondays still available in

2019, for other guilds to bring their Opportunity quilts to our

general meeting.

The Board also discussed the possibility of a Community Service

requirement for our members, as well as the fact that it needs to be

once again reiterated to members, that our December member is

for “Members Only”, mainly due to space constraints. Re: the

December meeting, some discussion took place, regarding the fact

that some members have indicated a desire to return to appetizers,

etc. instead of just offering desserts. No decision was made.

Website Chair, Colleen Voet announced that a new member,

Keenen Sederquist has offered to assist with our website.

Programs Chair Patty Clausen invited Board members to attend a

pre meeting dinner with our upcoming speaker, Michelle Pearson

on Monday June 4th at 5 PM at Brookfields restaurant in Roseville.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 PM.

Next PQG General meeting will be held on June 4, 2018

Next PQG Executive Board meeting will be held on Monday July 30,

2018

There is no board meeting in June, and no general meeting in July.

Respectfully submitted:

General Meeting Minutes

Pioneer Quilters’ Guild General Meeting

June 4, 2018

The meeting was called to order by President Fran Claassens at 7:00

PM.

Members and guests were welcomed and it was announced that

we currently have 11 openings in our membership.

Vice President Chris Westbrook introduced out visiting guild, Flying

Needles Quilt Guild from Woodland. Their representative Gina

Boyd gave a brief description of how their lovely quilt was made

and thanked our guild for always being very generous with our

ticket purchases.

The Minutes from the May 7, 2018 general meeting were approved,

as published in our Guild newsletter.

President Fran announced that the Church where we meet

(Shepherd of the Sierras) is extremely happy with the quilt display

that is currently hanging in their Narthex.

Old Business:

We have filled two open positions on our Board. One is the Elect

person for Ways and Means and that member is Marilyn

Spiegel. The second position filled is for the Elect person for

Programs and two members have volunteered: Lianne Peterson

and Alex Enneking. Thanks to all of you!

The Bylaw review by our Board is continuing. If members have

suggestions of ideas for Bylaw or Policy and Procedure changes,

please contact a Board member.

Due to scheduling difficulties a New Member lunch has been

cancelled. However, Shirley Shingara has made a New Member

Information Sheet, that will be on our website.

President Fran thanked Paula Crouch for the article she wrote re:

Community Service, for our newsletter. Fran urges all members to

be active in this aspect of our Guild.

New Business:

Budget requests for 2019 by Officers and Committee Chairs will be

due on October 15, 2018.

Committee Reports:

Nancy Colwell, Community Service Chair showed 12 quilts that have

been donated to our program by Thistle Dew Quilt Shop. Nancy

again expressed the desire of her committee to have 100%

participation in Community Service, by our membership. The next

Community Service Day will be held the third Tuesday of June.

Barbara Baker showed the June Block of the Month, as well as the

upcoming August block.

Show Quilt Chair Cornelia Smithson announced the drawing to be

held this evening for any applicants who have turned in their

registration forms for the Quilt Show. Two gift cards will be

awarded for that drawing. At the next Quilt Show, each quilt will

have a photo of its maker. These photos are requested at the time

the member sends in their registration form.

Newsletter Editor Beth Gardner requests that if a member is not

receiving the guild newsletter to please notify her. A member

asked about MyGrove. It is the vehicle for us to receive our

newsletters. It is also an informational site. If members do not

wish to receive these additional emails, they can go to the Settings

page and make a choice as to how often (or never) to receive

emails from them.

Bev Rognlien, Get Er Done Chair advised that if you sign up tonight

you still have two months remaining to complete the drawn quilt,

since we have no general meeting in July.

Diana Meier announced that the Summer Retreat is full with 8

members on the Waiting List. There is space for only 60 members

to attend.

Quilt Show Publicity Chair, Patsy Pavan informed us that postcards

are available for members to take to quilt shops or other

appropriate venues to advertise our show.

Patty Clausen, Programs, announced that our speaker this evening

is Michelle Peerson. She will also be with us tomorrow for a

“Rooster” appliqué workshop. The August meeting will bring Lynn

Wilder, and her workshop the following day is entitled: Patchwork

Math. Our September meeting (the last Monday of August, due to

Labor Day) will be our semi annual GUBA (Gently Used Boutique

and Auction). Tables can be rented by members at $10 each, for

them to be able to sell nice used items from their sewing

rooms. October will be our Challenge Reveal and November will be

a presentation by Inger Blood with a workshop the following day on

Ruler Work.

Ways and Means Diane Hamilton is requesting volunteers to take

our Opportunity Quilt to both Paradise and Chico.

Valerie Price, Challenge Chair needs to know the sizes to quilts, to

be entered. She needs that information from all participants by the

September General meeting.

The Nominating Committee for 2019 officers and committee chairs

will consist of Chris Westbrook, Kim Timms and Shelley Jose. Chris

encourages members to volunteer for the many positions.

Librarian Kim Timms announced a missing book from our Library,

entitled Kaffe Fassett Bold Blooms. She requests that this book be

returned ASAP.

Colleen Voet announced that the Fall Mt Hope Retreat will be held

on Sept 11-17, 2018. Signups are now being taken on our website.

Colleen, Website Chair, also informed us that member photos are

now on the Website with the exception of approximately 40

members. Barbara Victorino would like to take those remaining 40

photos and is available to do that at our general meetings. We

have a new volunteer for help on the website…..new member

Keenen Sederquist. Rosemarie Francis has also volunteered.

The membership was entertained by our speaker Michelle Peerson,

from Roseville.

Drawings were held for Block of the Month, Quilt Show entries,

Free Workshop and Sew and Sew.

Show and Tell was held.
