Happy New Year! Although we are now a month into 2013, I want to wish each
of you a healthy and happy year. 2012 was a great year for our chapter of the
American Sewing Guild, and based on the calendar established by the Education
and Events Committee, 2013 will be just as good, if not better. The committee
has made a serious effort to address the varied interests of our membership, so
you will find much diversity in the program offerings.
Please join me in welcoming our two new officers for 2013: secretary Lola
Weatherspoon and treasurer Sandra Herman. Along with returning officers first
vice president Donna Craft and second vice president Becky Gilbert, they will
work with the Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) and our committees to make the
chapter move smoothly through the year. At the same time, join me in thanking
outgoing secretary Irene Armock and treasurer Sara Kanya for their hard work
over the past two years. They have been bringing their replacements up to
speed in order to make the changeover as seamless as possible.
If you look at the list (page 2) of CAB members and others who have accepted
responsibility for the continuing success of the Lansing Clippers, each and every
one of these women has a role in the success of the chapter. We thank all of
them.
Thanks also go to the chapter members who have shared their talents and expe-
rience by presenting at guild meetings and providing demonstrations before
meetings. We’ll see more of the same in 2013 - just look at the programs and
demos coming up! And, I cannot finish without a big thank you to the Education
and Events committee for their creative approach to developing the programs
for 2012 and 2013 by recognizing and utilizing our best resources –our mem-
bers.

After a short break in December for the holidays, the Sew Stylin' Neighborhood
Group greeted the new year with enthusiasm! At the November 2012 meeting,
members brainstormed about their preferences for 2013 meetings and the result
was a wish list of topics, reflecting the many interests and talents of the group. A
plan developed: a portion of each meeting would be devoted to a specific technique
identified by the group members. With this in mind, the January meeting featured
Judy Huhn who led a terrific discussion on interfacings. Thank you, Judy!
Here are some of the other topics on our list: closures (zippers and buttonholes), facings done properly, decorative
top stitching, bagging a lining, and constructing a knit shirt with a collar. See what fun you can have if you join the
group?
On a personal note, I can tell you it is delightful to spend a few hours with sewing friends. Some members spend
the time working on a project while others come to visit and shop. Sometimes we help members problem-solve a
confusing technique or poll the group on a fitting challenge. And, we celebrate even the smallest success!
Sew Styling meets on the third Thursday of the month at Country Stitches. Hope to see you there!
NG Leaders: Mary Adkins, 517-703-9393 [email protected] and Joyce Savage, 517-641-6876.

Out & About - Mary Harvey
The first thing to do when you get this is mark on your calendar, Saturday February 2nd, to attend the open house
at Custom Quilts at 5676 Okemos Rd. just south of Haslett Rd. Susan Myers, who will be a program presenter for
us in February, has a wonderful lineup of speakers and demos from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. By now you should have
gotten an email blast with the details. We’re treating this as a retailer visit so plan to attend. See you there!
Did you know that Country Stitches, Custom Quilts, Everlasting Stitches, and Gall Sewing provide time each week
when you can go to their stores and use their workspace? Check with them to get the days and times. Reserve
your space if required; then take your machine and project and have fun sewing and socializing. Be sure to let
them know that you’re a Lansing Clippers member too.
Remember that many of our advertisers have on-line shopping if you don’t want to drive snowy roads this sea-
son. I just spent an hour or so browsing through the offerings of Fields’ Fabrics, Fabrications, and Around the
Block Quilt Shop. It’s a good way to get inspired for spring sewing and plan your next project.

Emerald: 2013 Pantone
Color of the Year
This emerald green color swatch re-leased by Pantone is Pantone LLC's Color of the Year for 2013, beating out all the other shades of the rainbow.
(AP) Featured in the Washington Post Style Blog. How did Pantone land on this hue to forever represent 2013? We’re sure to hear many theories in the next few months, which will probably range from: The color reminds us of sim-pler things such as grass and Mother Nature...Green is the color of growth and signifies America in 2013...The rich tone is all about luxury, just like jewels and money.... Whichever theory you prefer, Pantone is describing the choice as, “Lively. Radiant. Lush...A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.”
That nice, but what does it mean for you? It’s time to visit Emerald City. Whether it’s your wardrobe or your living room, here are some tips for embracing emerald:
-Lively and radiant: Just like in nature, greens look good with bright colors. Pair it with bold yellows and oranges for an energizing jolt.
-Lush: Emerald is a jewel tone. Take a hint from jewelry
counters and mix it with rich purples, blues, reds, black and
gold.
-Balance and harmony: Embrace the zen of emerald by pair-
ing it with grays, whites and muted yellows or blues.

Our library videos and books seem to be very popular among guild members. It is great to see so many of you using our re-sources. To keep up with the needs of members, I have been looking for new books to add to our collection. I would like to hear your suggestions for specific books or topics for books we need to add. Please drop your ideas in the library suggestio n box.
Recently guild members have contributed several used books about knitting and fiber arts to the library. This encouraged me to start a new section in our library on fiber arts. The books in this section include knitting, crochet, weaving, and other fiber arts. If you have books on this topic that you are no longer using, you can contribute them to the library. Book contributi ons on other sewing topics are also welcome.
Remember to return your books after one month. If you bring your book back later the charge is $1.00 per month beyond one month. Books can be renewed for a second month. Even when we do not open the library, we provide a place to return books at guild meetings.

ASG Charity at Work - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
As you can see in the article above, the Lansing Clippers have always re-
sponded with an open heart to needs within our community. This year we
had four Community Service projects: bibs for the VFW National Children’s
Home, hats and mittens for the Adventist Community Service Center, scarves
for the UAW to sell to support Breast Cancer Research and stockings for the City Rescue Mis-
sion Women and Children’s Shelter. We outdid ourselves this year!
Here are some pictures of the stockings as they were being taken to the
Shelter. Bravo for another job well done!
The ASG Lansing Clippers Chapter launched one of its 2013 charity projects: a quilt to be auctioned for the Ameri-
can Cancer Society Breast Cancer Research. Members coordinating the construction of this project are Becky
Gilbert, 2nd Vice President, and Roselyn Chaffin, Education and Events Committee member. Members are making
quilt blocks in colors of pink, rose, beige and brown for the queen size quilt . Final submission date for blocks is at
the guild meeting on March 11th. On Thursday, March 14, members will meet at the UAW Hall to arrange the
blocks and add sashing to complete the top. Donna Craft, 1st Vice President, will complete the quilting of the top,
batting, and backing.
The pattern for the quilt can be viewed at www. Anniescatalog.com. At the website search for Emma’s Star II
Quilt Pattern. It is anticipated that the quilt will be completed in time for Show and Tell at the July 8th chapter
meeting.
Check on page 6 for information about our PJ’s project for the City Rescue Mission Women and Children’s Shelter.

Charity work has always been an important part of ASG Lansing Clippers. Below is an article from the Spring
2001 newsletter telling about making 80 (yep count ‘em, 80!) bears for the LPD Victims Advocate Program.

Snippets From Our Stash
Isn’t it fun to reflect on the past quarter with this article, “Snippets from our Stash”? The pictures sure are great
and do bring a smile as we reflect. What fun and interesting times we have had; a great way to recap what we
have experienced in the chapter. A very special thanks to those who really have made the article a must see:
Sandy Theisen, Chris Knapp & Joyce Savage!
November was chuck full of fun, with a great dinner party, lots of laughs, and good efforts in decorating stockings
for the Women & Children’s Shelter of the Rescue Mission of Lansing. The supervisor of the shelter said it was
wonderful to see the mothers of the children on Christmas Eve come in and pick out
the stockings for their children. You gave a great gift to those mothers, dignity, by
creating your stockings and donating those wonderful items! Many thanks to Angie
Reynolds and Colleen Bofysil for bringing this idea of both the dinner and giving back
to our community in such a special way. Thank you to all of you for caring.
December brought us a great demo before the meeting, with Kathy Weller showing us how to take a shirt and turn
it into a cool apron! Then at the program, we had the pleasure of conquering zipper insertion with member Col-
leen Bofysil who took away any mystery. What a great time we had making the hands on pins, etc. that Colleen
showed us, in using metal zippers! You should have seen the show & tell!
Congrats to our winning stocking
decorators: Sandy Herman,
Doreen Politi and Joy Thomas.

Snippets From Our Stash (cont.)
January’s guild night sure was packed with excitement with the kick-off of a very ambitious 2013! We met the elected
officers and learned what their responsibilities are, ventured to meet & greet members by the bingo search, discovered
the library has MUCH to offer, got the skinny on our community service projects, and oh my what a great selection of
classes, trips, and programs we have to look forward to!
