How does media influence violence

The increase of violence on television and music lyrics has corresponded with a great increase in aggressive

thoughts and violent crimes over the past decades especially in teens

It is believed that the cause and effect relationship exists between

media violence and real life violence

The Effects of Violence in Media

bull Teens listen to an average of 40 hours of music per week

bull Lyrics have become increasingly explicit particularly with reference to drugs sex sexual violence etc

bull American Statistics show (in music lyrics) that 47 of mothers with children in public schools believe that violent messages in music contribute ldquoa great dealrdquo to school violence

bull 66 of 13-17 year olds believe violence in music is partly responsible for violent crimes

Children 12 years and under committed murder robber larceny-theft and forcible rape that showed evidence of specific reenactments of actions in movies Throughout the past 30 years violence in the media has increased and so has violence in our society among young peopleResearchers followed 329 subjects over 15 years and found that those exposed to violent television shows were much more likely to later be convicted of a crimeExamples Jackass The Simpsons Jersey Shore Family Guy Angry Birds etc
