Overview of PEEK

Organization Goal:

Educating members about private equity and entrepreneurship, strengthening relationships with alumni,

and facilitating career and networking opportunities

Who should participate in PEEK events?

All students interested in pursuing a role in private equity or entrepreneurship, whether directly after graduating from Kellogg or later in their careers

Students pursuing careers in industries in which they would be working with entrepreneurs or private equity professionals, such as investment banking, consulting or general management

What is Private Equity?

General Definition:

Equity capital invested in private companies

Who is investing?

Private equity firms invest capital on behalf of their limited partners

For simplicity purposes, we divide private equity firms into two general categories:

Venture Capital: Firms making investments in companies in their early stage of operation

Buyout: Firms making investments in companies in their later stages of operation. These firms usually recapitalize acquired company with some level of debt after transaction.

Club Organization

PEEK events will be targeted/marketed to one of three interests:

Buyouts

Venture Capital

Entrepreneurship

Why does PEEK cover all three?

Line is blurry between Buyout and Venture Capital investing. Students can learn investing principals in one area that might apply to other; having a club that oversees both encourages such insight

Individuals working in Buyouts and Venture Capital will often work closely with entrepreneurs, and vice versa. Having a club that oversees all three areas provides greater opportunity for interaction during business school

Students can, and are encouraged to, attend any PEEK event

Courses and Concentrations

Buyouts, Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship are by nature very broad areas; a general business education is essential for success in all.

To supplement the Entrepreneurship major, PEEK devised a list of recommended courses for Buyouts and Venture Capital

Not a formal major

Based on input from recent graduates who are currently working for Buyouts and Venture Capital firms

Students maintain flexibility to take courses that best suit their interests

List available on PEEK website

PEEK recommends students determine where their educational needs are and choose courses that best meet these needs

Roles in Buyouts vs. Venture Capital

Roles for individuals directly following MBA differs slightly between Buyouts and Venture Capital:

Buyouts: Heavily-weighted toward financial analysis; necessary to have deep

knowledge of financial modeling and accounting Have to be able to understand and evaluate broad, established

industries. Ability to help firm identify and work with potential targets

Venture Capital: Heavily-weighted toward being able to understand technology trends Key skill-sets: Deep domain expertise, deep network or operating

experience. Assist Partners in deals Typical roles after B-school: Senior Associates/Principals

Before going through job search process, students should determine whether their experience prior to school would be better-suited for Buyouts or Venture Capital

Overview of Events Events will be focused on either Buyouts, Venture Capital or

Entrepreneurship

Schedule is ordered to maximize impact to students:

Fall Quarter: General educational events

Winter Quarter: Job search and networking events

Spring Quarter: More specific educational events in preparation for summer / full-time work

KPEC: Quarter-long projects for venture capital and buyout firms and start-

up companies. Applications due each quarter Students are matched with interested parties Great opportunity for students to get additional, real-world experience

while in school

Resume Review and Mock Interviews: First-years receive practice and counseling from second-years

NFTE: National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Kellogg students provide mentorship to young entrepreneurs NFTE Info Session: Thursday, October 11, 5:15pm G36

Socials: Bi-quarterly events that provide opportunity for students interested in

PEEK-related careers to meet in an informal situation (aka a bar)

Buyouts Bootcamp: General introduction to buyouts industry

East Coast Trek: Opportunity for second-years to meet with buyout firms in New York. Current first-years need to plan at end of this year for next.

Chicago Trek Day: Opportunity for students to meet firms in Chicago

Buyouts Case Competition: Educational event. Preparation for national, intra-business school case competitions.

Legal Documentation Speaker Series: Local lawyers will teach basics of legal documentation

Industry Focused Speaker Series: Professionals from firms investing in specific industries (e.g. healthcare, energy) come to Kellogg to speak

Service Provider Presentations: Professionals from consulting, investment banking and accounting firms speak about how their roles impact buyouts

Entrepreneurship Speaker Series: Range of entrepreneurs and their investors come to Kellogg to speak

Search Fund Presentation: Kellogg alums with search fund backing come to Kellogg to speak

Silicon Valley Entrepreneurship Trek: Opportunity for students to meet start-up firms, and their investors, in Silicon Valley

Recruiting

Recruiting for PEEK-related internships and full-time jobs is largely an off-campus search

Students who do well in off-campus search are: Able to determine how their experience makes them unique and

valuable to the firms and companies they are contacting Disciplined Persistent Self-starters Adept at networking

Going though search process is good barometer for fit in PEEK-related careers

Getting Involved

PEEK encourages you to do the following:

Sign up for listserv: Best means for keeping up-to-date on all PEEK events

Attend events: As mentioned throughout presentation, all Kellogg students are encouraged to attend all PEEK events.

Volunteer at events: PEEK events are organized and staffed entirely by students. There is plenty of capacity for interested students!

Apply to be member of PEEK leadership team: Applications have been distributed through listserv. Deadline for submitting applications is Friday, October 5th Roles Office hours this week, lunchtimes in the Atrium

Private Equity Conference

11th annual Kellogg Private Equity Conference will be held on April 2nd, 2008

Conference has variety of speakers and panels, covering a wide span of topics related to Buyouts and Venture Capital

Organized by group of students separate of PEEK

In past, there has been high degree of overlap between PEEK and Private Equity Conference volunteers
