He’s been to Star Wars conferences all over the world.

He met his wife, Holly, in 1994. A) An experience that happened some time before

now but the specific time is not mentioned (because we don’t know it, or it’s not important). The experience refers to a life time that is not finished.

B) An experience that happened some time before now and we know when it happened (because it’s explicitly said or because the context tells us).
