Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum Outline Wexford Christian Preschool This curriculum was created in accordance with the Pennsylvania Learning Standards for Early Childhood (2014). While a majority of the standards are not specifically listed in this curriculum, it is to be understood that all standards are to be addressed and developed as an integral part of daily classroom rounes and acvies. Those standards targeng more specific skill sets have been listed in the unit(s) to which they correspond. DAILY OVERVIEW Free Play (30 minutes) During this me, students will complete a daily sign-in acvity which will focus on prinng their names (first and last) as well as praccing tracing and handwring skills. Students will also focus on emergent reading using the daily sample. Once the student has completed their daily exercise, they will engage in student-led free play. This opportunity allows for the de- velopment of social skills, dramac play, and creave expression. Circle Time (15 Minutes) During this me, students will work with the instructor to pracce calendar concepts, weather recognion, and math skills such as sequenal counng, place values, counng by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, and paerns. Journal Time (15 minutes) During this me, students will pracce their handwring skills using the daily concepts covered during circle me. Students will also gain experience and comfort with daily rounes, and will begin to gain independence in finding the answers to daily quesons. This is also an opportunity for teachers to introduce pracce for any new skills covered, such as paerns, leer sound recognion, math skills, etc. Letter Time (15 minutes) During this me, students will engage with and pracce their phonemic awareness through various acvies, including leer songs and visual clues. Students will pracce recognizing both the uppercase and lowercase form of each weeks leer, and will idenfy the corresponding phoneme. Students will then use their knowledge to list words that begin with that parcular sound, allowing them to pracce speaking and hearing each sound. Sight Words (15 minutes) During this me, students will engage in acvies that allow them to become familiar with recognizing and using the sight words from the Dolch Pre-Primer list by both recognizing and reading them, as well as using them in wrien form. Acvies should be engaging and varied in an effort to integrate the new words into the students learning. Core Activities (90 Minutes) During this me, the students will engage in a variety of engagement acvies designed to acvate prior knowledge of the subject maer, and allow them to make connecons to new experiences. Each unit will integrate mulple disciplines, including ELA, Math, Science, and the Arts, allowing students to gain a global understanding of concepts. Each unit will include a wide range of acvies to appeal to all learning styles. In addion, students will be acve learners in a hands-on environment based on the use of the five senses as a method of gaining new informaon.

Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum Outline

Wexford Christian Preschool

This curriculum was created in accordance with the Pennsylvania Learning Standards for Early Childhood (2014).

While a majority of the standards are not specifically listed in this curriculum, it is to be understood that all

standards are to be addressed and developed as an integral part of daily classroom routines and activities.

Those standards targeting more specific skill sets have been listed in the unit(s) to which they correspond.

DAILY OVERVIEW

Free Play (30 minutes)

During this time, students will complete a daily sign-in activity which will focus on printing their names (first and last)

as well as practicing tracing and handwriting skills. Students will also focus on emergent reading using the daily sample. Once

the student has completed their daily exercise, they will engage in student-led free play. This opportunity allows for the de-

velopment of social skills, dramatic play, and creative expression.

Circle Time (15 Minutes)

During this time, students will work with the instructor to practice calendar concepts, weather recognition, and math

skills such as sequential counting, place values, counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, and patterns.

Journal Time (15 minutes)

During this time, students will practice their handwriting skills using the daily concepts covered during circle time.

Students will also gain experience and comfort with daily routines, and will begin to gain independence in finding the answers

to daily questions. This is also an opportunity for teachers to introduce practice for any new skills covered, such as patterns,

letter sound recognition, math skills, etc.

Letter Time (15 minutes)

During this time, students will engage with and practice their phonemic awareness through various activities,

including letter songs and visual clues. Students will practice recognizing both the uppercase and lowercase form of each

week’s letter, and will identify the corresponding phoneme. Students will then use their knowledge to list words that begin

with that particular sound, allowing them to practice speaking and hearing each sound.

Sight Words (15 minutes)

During this time, students will engage in activities that allow them to become familiar with recognizing and using the

sight words from the Dolch Pre-Primer list by both recognizing and reading them, as well as using them in written form.

Activities should be engaging and varied in an effort to integrate the new words into the student’s learning.

Core Activities (90 Minutes)

During this time, the students will engage in a variety of engagement activities designed to activate prior knowledge

of the subject matter, and allow them to make connections to new experiences. Each unit will integrate multiple disciplines,

including ELA, Math, Science, and the Arts, allowing students to gain a global understanding of concepts. Each unit will

include a wide range of activities to appeal to all learning styles. In addition, students will be active learners in a hands-on

environment based on the use of the five senses as a method of gaining new information.

UNIT: Welcome Back to School

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is focused on introducing the students to classroom rules, routines, and expectations. This unit is integral to

building the foundation for a successful year. Students will become familiar with their environment, and will be

introduced to daily routines. This unit also focuses on engaging the students in the creation of classroom behavioral

guidelines. Students will participate in creating “Class Rules” as well as helping to determine appropriate

consequences under the guidance of the instructors. Students will be encouraged to develop a viewpoint of the

classroom as a positive and welcoming environment that is both fun and educational.

UNIT: All About Me!

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is focused on the celebration of each student’s unique qualities, and creating an atmosphere of acceptance

of each others’ differences and similarities. The primary goal of this unit is to allow the students to develop a sense

of Classroom Community and gain a sense of belonging to the group. Students will be given opportunities to share

about themselves and what they enjoy, while also learning these things about their classmates. The instructor will

design activities that guide the students to gain an understanding of how to function within a group as an individual,

and how individual characteristics can be used to make the group better as a whole.

UNIT: Eric Carle Week

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is centered around the works of the author Eric Carle. Each day, the teacher will introduce a new Eric Carle

story and create the daily learning activities to center around this text. Students will begin to associate these stories

with the author, and will begin to recognize the author’s artwork and will identify it as belonging to Eric Carle. This

unit will focus mainly on English Language Arts activities and Creative Arts activities, but will also include math skills

that can be connected to the daily text.

UNIT: Apples, Apples, Everywhere!

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is an introduction to a focus on Fall as well as looking at life cycles, with apples and apple trees as the

specific focus. Students will learn about the life cycle of apples, as well as explore the many uses of apples. The

teacher will integrate cooking projects, science projects, art projects, and creative arts activities along with the ELA

and Math activities. Students will also explore the history of the historical character Johnny Appleseed and his

significance to the history of our region. This unit will include the field trip to the farm, which will be considered an

integrative learning experience focusing on local products and businesses.

UNIT: Columbus Day & America’s History

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit will focus on the history of America as a country, and its origins with regards to explorer Christopher

Columbus. Students will become familiar with important people and concepts related to our country’s origin.

Students will also explore the concepts of maps and travel, as well as why explorers are motivated to find new

places. The teacher will provide learning activities that allow students to apply the idea of exploration and mapping

to their own surroundings.

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is primarily intended to introduce students to the concept of fire safety, as well as expose them to safe

habits and routines in the event of an emergency. Students will get to meet Fireman Tim, and will learn good

practices to remain safe. The teacher will center the week’s learning activities around making good and safe choices

for oneself, as well as helping others remain safe.

UNIT: Fall Fun

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit covers a broad spectrum of topics related to the Fall season. Students will explore the changes in the

natural environment and how to make good choices based on daily weather. In addition, students will explore how

the changes in the weather and natural environment effect the animals and plants within the area. Students will also

explore Fall holidays and traditions related to the season, including the history behind these holidays and traditions.

The teacher will create a variety of integrated learning experiences across all areas of learning that will allow

students to explore all aspects of the changing seasons.

UNIT: Elections & Voting

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is focused on the process of voting and elections in the United States. Students will explore the process by

which the president is elected, and how the voting process is utilized. Students will begin to understand the concept

of voting and majority rules as a method for making decisions and resolving conflict, and will participate in their own

election in the classroom. Students will also be introduced to the idea that all individuals have preferences and

beliefs that affect their personal decisions.

UNIT: Thanksgiving

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is centered around the history of the Thanksgiving holiday, and its significance in our lives. Students will

learn about the history of the first Thanksgiving, and will become familiar with important groups of people and

places related to the story. In addition, students will learn about traditional symbols of the holiday and their

significance (Cornucopia, etc.) and will be encouraged to list the many things that they are thankful for. The unit will

culminate in a Thanksgiving Feast celebration where students will enjoy a meal together.

UNIT: Christmas

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is centered around the Christmas Program given by the students, and will focus on the Nativity Story and

the importance of the holiday in the Christian Faith. Students will focus most of their energy on the show, but will

also spend time making Christmas gifts for their parents, and celebrating the season together. Students will gain an

appreciation of Christmas traditions in different cultures and families.

UNIT: The Mitten

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit serves as a reintroduction to school routines and schedule after the Christmas break. Students will become

familiar with the author/illustrator Jan Brett, particularly the book The Mitten. The teacher will use this book as an

introductory unit to learning about Winter in the upcoming weeks. Learning activities will center around the story,

and will be focused on getting students re-acclimated to school after time off.

UNIT: Animals in Winter

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is an exploration of the effects of winter on animals (including people). The students will explore the

concepts of hibernation, migration, and adaptation, focusing particularly on animals living in the area, but also

looking at prime examples of each category (bears, artic hares, butterflies, etc.) The students will also explore how

the animals prepare in the months leading up to winter, and will draw connections between how winter affects us

as humans, and how it affects animals in different ways in terms of survival and necessities.

UNIT: Winter

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit broadens in focus to examine Winter as a season, including weather patterns, traditional seasonal

activities, and the many ways the season is unique (snow, winter foods, etc.). The teacher will utilize winter themes

for all learning activities,, such as winter math games and winter vocabulary words, and will incorporate appropriate

seasonal activities (with time outside if the weather permits).

UNIT: My Five Senses

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit serves as an in-depth learning experience where students are given the opportunity to use all five senses to

learn about the world around them. Students will learn how to gather information about their surroundings, and the

different ways they can experience stimulations. The teacher will provide a variety of situations and activities where

students can make use of their five senses to gather information and make predictions about events, and test their

predictions. Activities should primarily be hands-on and student-led explorations.

UNIT: Healthy Eating

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit serves to build a foundation for students making healthy choices for themselves. Students will explore the

different food groups, and will learn how to make good food choices to stay healthy and grow strong. Students will

discuss the consequences of poor eating habits, and how making healthy decisions can affect their physical health.

The teacher will provide different learning activities that allow students to make decisions and utilize learned

information in real-life (or simulated) situations.

UNIT: My Amazing Body

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit focuses on the human body, specifically on the skeleton, muscles, and major organs. Students will explore

the functions of different body parts, and will learn about how the body parts work and allow us to move and

function. The teacher will provide many different learning activities for each body system that allows the students to

get a better idea of what is going on inside their own bodies. In addition, the unit will also cover what happens when

body parts get hurt or break, and how they can be treated to become healed.

UNIT: Valentine’s Day & Love

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is centered around the Valentine’s Day holiday, and includes the holiday party. The students will explore

traditions associated with Valentine’s Day, as well as traditional holiday symbols. Students will also explore the con-

cept of love, focusing on how we can show love to others. Students will learn to distinguish between different kinds

of love (friendship, family, God’s love, etc.). The teacher will provide opportunities for students to come up with

UNIT: Dental Health Week

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit focuses on learning healthy habits and routines to (begin to) independently care for the teeth and mouth.

Students will learn about the different tools used to keep teeth healthy, and will also explore the connection

between making healthy food choices and dental health. Students will explore how food choices can positively or

negatively affect dental health, and will make connections between information learned during the previous units

on health.

UNIT: Dr. Seuss

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is a celebration of the life and works of Dr. Seuss, in honor of his birthday. Students will explore the life

history of Seuss, and will be exposed to several of his books throughout the week. Learning activities will center

around Dr. Seuss’ books. The students will become familiar with the rhymes and “silly” words that are particular to

Seuss’ writing style, and at the end of the week should be able to recognize the illustrations common to the Seuss

books.

UNIT: Colors & Shapes

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit focuses on both the visual and mathematic concepts behind shapes and shape recognition, as well as the

visual and scientific aspects of color and color mixing. Students will learn to recognize a wide variety of shapes,

including several 3-D shapes. Students will also explore the concepts of primary colors, and color mixing through

hands on experiences. The learning activities provided will be hands-on and interactive, involving many different

materials, and will allow the students and opportunity to express themselves creatively through visual art projects.

UNIT: St. Patrick’s Day

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is focused on the St. Patrick’s Day holiday, with particular emphasis on the Irish culture and holiday

traditions associated with the holiday. Students will explore traditional symbols and their meanings, and will learn

about Irish folklore (leprechauns, etc.) The teacher will provide opportunities to explore the culture and history

behind the holiday, as well as opportunity for creative expression and journaling. At the culmination of the unit,

students will be able to retell the origin story of St. Patrick in their own words.

UNIT: Under the Sea

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is taught in conjunction with the Spring Program. While the main focus will be on program preparation and

practice, this unit will also allow students to experience and introduction to sea life and explore the habitat and

This unit serves the double purpose of exploring the Easter holiday, as well as the spring season and upcoming

changes in the weather. Students will explore the history and meaning behind the Easter story and traditions, and

UNIT: Seeds & Plants

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit is a continuation of the focus on the Spring season, with particular emphasis on the importance of planting

seeds at this time of year. Students will explore the life cycle of different plants from seed to mature plant, and will

engage in hands-on gardening and planting activities to grow their own plants. At the culmination of the unit,

students should be able to explain the basic life cycle of a plant, and should be able to explain how seeds become

plants, particularly detailing what plants need to grow and survive. Students should also recognize that plants may

have a specific purpose or use, and should be able to describe different uses for plants.

UNIT: Butterflies

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit focuses on the life cycle of the butterfly, and will include the annual W.C.C tradition of raising butterflies

from caterpillars and releasing them once their metamorphosis has been completed. The students will explore the

butterfly life cycle through many different learning activities, including songs and art projects, in addition to the

actual butterflies that are being raised. At the end of the unit, students should be able to explain the life cycle of the

butterfly from beginning to end, including details of important events in each stage.

UNIT: Graduation

BROAD OVERVIEW:

This unit serves to wrap up the school year and prepare the students for the Graduation ceremony, as well as

provide comfort and confidence in the idea of moving on to Kindergarten. This unit is meant to praise the hard work

the students have done during the year, and celebrate their completion of the important milestone of Preschool.

The teacher will focus on the individual achievements and efforts of each student and praise their successes, in an

effort to prepare them to move on to Kindergarten in the Fall.
